Almost 6 rotations, fastest box spin to date, that's how excited Rodney is for this video! I can't wrap my head around how a game rules video can emit so much positive energy.

@@gqsnowman oh cool! I watched the team covenant videos explaining Ashes a few years ago, they were great for learning about it. I didn't know they were such a part of it being brought back!

Great video. I never played the first time round but bought some ver1.0 and subscribed to Team Covenant for Reborn when they announced it. Looking forward to playing it soon !!!
Here are some questions for you: 1. How were you able to get cards to stand by themselves without holding them in the video? Did you use stands for the physical cards, or were images of them put in the video through computer editing after you recorded it? (As an example, the "Summon Gilder" card is standing by itself on 24:18) 2. Is the type of editing that you did for this video (circles around key pictures, sections, etc.) going to continue in future tutorial videos? That's the first time I noticed all of these special effects, and I hope that those effects continue in future videos. 3. For the Illusion Magic's Dice Power, can a wolf be spent to downgrade an opponent's single power side dice 2 levels, or do you have to downgrade 2 different dice? Also, can you still use a Illusion Magic Dice Power if your opponent only have 1 dice on its power or class side left in his active pool (and would that dice downgrade 1 or 2 levels in that case)? I'm getting confused since the wording doesn't mention if a single dice can be targeted twice, or it must be 2 completely different dice (and the keyword "different" isn't in the sentence, too.) 4. Is the old tutorial for "Ashes: Rise Of The Phoenixborn" from 5 years ago going to be left on this channel, or are you deleting it since this new version is coming out too (and to make sure viewers won't get confused about the 2 versions on your channel and think the older tutorial video is the one with the rules that should follow with Ashes Reborn)? 5. Is the lantern with a candle lighting on the back table a new addition to the Watch It Played set , and is it a new décor item we can expect to continue to see in the future? (It might have been in past videos, but I just noticed it in this video for the first time.)
1) Those are the physical cards. Do you really want to know all the secrets of how it's done? Isn't it more fun to wonder? :) 2) Only in some cases. It's a lot of extra work, and while I find it helpful in a video where there are a lot of smaller details on cards that I want to point out (I also did this in my Guild Ball series), I actually prefer for the video to be more organic and natural - the way a real person would teach you the game - and less "special effect-sy. It's an aesthetic/feel that I think is important for what I'm trying to create. 3) With the Illusion dice (and all other effects), it will help to take the wording quite literally. In that case it says "lower TWO dice", so that means you couldn't lower 1 dice 2 times, because then you wouldn't be lowering TWO dice. That's not to say that there might not be wording inconsistencies in other places, but I think following that general rule will help. Also, although I do my very best to answer all rules questions, I avoid individual card effects (it's just more than I can handle across all the videos I do, and comments I have to respond to). Here's my quick answer on this one though. The general answer is you resolve effects as fully as you can and ignore things you can't. So if the opponent only had 1 die left, I'd say you lower it by 1, and then, since there is no other die to lower - the effect stops there. That's not an official answer though. For an official answer, that's best for PHG or maybe the BoardGameGeek forums. 4) Good question, but I haven't decided yet. There is a related game play series, and I'm not sure I'm ready to remove that part of the Watch It Played history from the channel... and the rules video supports the way that game play was played. I might instead just have to put a note in the description of the video - pin a comment, etc. 5) It has been in recent ones, but as for whether it's staying or not, let's find out together! I know I didn't answer all of your questions fully, but I hope that was helpful overall!
For your question about Illusion dice, Rodney is correct that you do exactly what the card says as fully as possible, and ignore the rest. You can find the rules for resolving effects on p. 14 of the Reborn rulebook, and p. 17 specifies what to do when something affects multiple elements at the same time. The technical timing of this effect is that you choose two dice to roll down, then roll the first down, then roll the second down. If your opponent only has a single die, you can still roll it down but you'll only roll it down a single level (because choosing the dice to affect happens as a chunk, not after you've already rolled it once).
I may have missed it or you decided the players can find this out on their own, but if a card has a pic of a Phoenixborn in the lower right corner, that card can only be in that Phoenixborn’s deck. (card is exclusive to that Phoenixborn)
Thank you for mentioning the upgrade kit! I absolutely love Ashes and would prefer to play with the balance changes without purchasing the entire set again. So thank you again for throwing that tidbit in there 😁
This was SUCH a fantastic option for them to throw in. Not something a lot of companies would do (after all, better as a business if you just have to buy everything again, right?). I went through and replaced all my cards just the other day, and I have to say - I think the changes/choices they made are really good for the game.
@@WatchItPlayed Just got my hands on the upgrade kit today, and had to come back for a Rodney Refresher. Thanks for the excellent and endless support of the hobby!

Welcome! 1) A game I want to feature. 2) A game that is a good fit. 3) The publisher hires me for the tutorial (this is my full time work). 1 and 2 are required before getting to stage 3.
Wow I had the old version on my wish list so long it went out of print and back in print. I wish I could say that's a first, but who are we kidding? *checks for War of the Ring 3rd ed.*
Great video once again Rodney. This game is really new to me and so awesome. Notice there are a lot of expansions. Is it okay to start playing with the core game first?
I tend to avoid personalized recommendations, because it's hard for me to say what you're looking for, but I believe there is a lot of game in the core box. Six complete, fully playable decks. Lots of pairings to be had there!
Just a heads up, if you do end up getting expansions down the road, two deluxe expansions (Law of Lions and Song of Soaksend) add 2 new dice types and are needed to play expansions using those dice types. This won't affect you if you're starting with just the core, but the only expansions you can get without needing to get atleast one of these deluxe expansions are Children of Blackcloud, Frostdale Giants, Duchess of Deception, and Roaring Rose. All the others use one or both of the deluxe expansion dice types. Happy gaming!
Awesome tutorial! But I still have a question ⁉️ Can you stack alteration spells, like "root armor", on a unit target? If yes, does that give my unit a Armored 2 effect?
Yes, alterations will stack. You'll find this addressed in detail in the Glossary at the back of the rule book (under Stacking abilities) - hope that helps!
Quick rules question: can a unit declare an attack against an exhausted unit? If so, can that unit still counter to damage the attacker (by adding an additional exhaustion token maybe)?
The attacker can declare an attack against an exhausted unit, however, the target will not be able to counter, as it is exhausted, so it will just have to take the damage.
This game doesn't seem like it was designed for 3-4 players in mind but it's a lot more interesting that way.. 3-4 player games seem like an afterthought in the manual and some of the card effects become much stronger with more players (ie: everytime a unit of any player dies your unit gets stronger). Has anyone built their own decks? Is it more fast paced/interesting that way?
I've only played the game 2 players, but good to know you're tried it with more and enjoyed it that way. I've built my own decks, and really enjoyed that.
Excellent tutorial and overview. I loved the original and can't wait to play with the new stuff. I was looking for a link to those game trayz you were using in the description, but couldn't find them. Do you have a link?
Okay so I have a question. After you play a ready spell like summon mist spirit, and then on the following turn summon the creature and put a exhausted token on the ready spell. So after the recovery phase and you remove the exhaustion token from the ready spell card, can you use that same summon card again?
If you have the 2 ready spells for the silver serpent, and you already have in on the board, can you use the other ready spell for the purpose of putting another status token on it? Since you can only have 1 silver serpent on the field?
Hey Tyler, Summon Silver Snake specifically indicates 'that' Silver Snake, meaning it needs to be a freshly summoned Snake and not one you already had in play. Hope that helps!
Thanks Rodney! Just curious, I don't have Reborn, but I do have all of the original Ashes content; do you think it would be okay to play with the v1.5 rules without the upgrade kit? I like the rule changes but not ready to purchase Reborn just yet.
The new Ashes Reborn ruleset was designed in conjunction with the redesigns of many older cards. You can certainly play 1.5 rules with 1.0 cards if you want to (many people in the community have in the meantime before release), but just know that you probably aren't going to have the most balanced or representative experience of the game.
You can, but instead of using the Reborn rules, use the Raven rules, which is a direct inspiration to the Reborn rules and are fully integrated to the original card. Side note: These info comes from the creator of the Raven rules.
Ashes is more similar to a dueling game like MTG, just without randomized packs, rarities, etc. Summoner Wars uses a map/grid and the cards act more like game pieces on said board. Both are great games, but they fit different niches.
I think they are working on expanding their shipping options, but yes... depending on where you live it can be pretty pricey. Same for me here in Canada even :/
@@WatchItPlayed yeah hopefully it's gets better. I've never played the original but your video made it look very interesting. And it's the kind of game my girlfriend and I like to play together
@@WatchItPlayed I'm also in Canada near Montreal. I usually expect to pay a certain price for shipping... But not that much. I guess I'm spoiled because of Amazon Prime 🤣
Check with your local game store; the interest in Ashes Reborn was a lot higher than they were expecting, and they are in fact distributing through standard distributors in the USA and CA, so you might be able to skip shipping by buying local.
Dammit rodney, you and Team Covenant are out to get me...This is the poorest month of the year and i was happy to not have any must have games on radar...
Unfortunately the automatically generated captions are controlled by TH-cam and I have no idea why it generated Korean instead of English for this video. This is a bug that has been brought to TH-cam's attention, but not something that can be fixed for older videos I'm afraid.
I don't understand what has changed between the original and the new version... I have the original and some expansions, and I didn't see anything that seemed new.
There's been quite a few subtle, but important changes - it might be why you missed them. Check the description of the video, I link to a primer on what's new, which should give you a helpful breakdown. Combat is one of the bigger changes (n terns of how many units can be involved in an attack against a single unit, and in how countering works.)
Hi, I really link this video, but the automatic generate default subtitle becomes KOREAN not ENGLISH, so that if I change the subtitle to Chinese, It comes with wrong translation, can you let TH-cam fix this?
If you are a Team Covenant subscriber, they always send out emails before they ship their product, so if you haven't received an email notifying you of the charge + product shipment, then...unfortunately that would be no. That said, I don't think PHG would be sponsoring Rodney to make a Watch It Played on Reborn unless they were ramping up to release very soon! EDIT: PHG website currently says to expect subscriptions and pre-orders to ship mid-February, which means we'd receive product by late February, ideally.
Ashes Reborn generally plays a lot faster than legacy Ashes, which should help; unfortunately multiplayer wasn't a big focus of the redesign so it's probably still a little clunky (I haven't tried it myself yet).
I would recommend getting the upgrade kit. It will give you all the updated cards you need for your core set, plus new cards you can use for deckbuilding. If you get the reborn core set you will end up getting less. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
@@iand920you will miss alot of cards from the expansions since not everything is reworked. I would suggest just buying the Reborn expansions separately
@@Muhd_Akmal Your first advice was to buy the Reborn core set ($50 MSRP), but that's more expensive than getting the Upgrade Kit ($30) and you'll get less value overall since you already own a 1.0 core. At least if you buy the Upgrade Kit you'll have a bunch of new cards to experiment with *and* you'll have duplicates later for further deckbuilding once you buy Reborn expansions, not to mention you pay less money overall. The new core set really only makes sense for people who are completely new to the game and don't own any previous product.
Yes, I think you might find (especially given your prior experience with games), that once you started playing, things would click pretty quickly. The player references, and the icons/text on the cards guides a lot of the process, which is great.
I don't know if they were "clambering", but the entire project was only revived because enough players committed to buying the minimal amount of product for PHG to be able to cover development and production costs. So there are at least enough people who wanted to revive the game to justify making it again, and potentially growing beyond the original.
Brings back dark memories of my addiction to buying MtG cards. I get afraid when I see card games that have that sort of theme, I spent a lot of money and have almost 5,000 Mtg cards. I went through the 12 steps of MtG Anonymous and I wouldn’t want to go to the dark again...LOL.

You can certainly play 1.5 rules with 1.0 cards if you want to (many people in the community have in the meantime before release), but just know that you probably aren't going to have the most balanced or representative experience of the game.
@@jeremydelaporte3770 Awesome, thanks for the feedback!
Sorry I never replied to this, not sure how I missed this comment previously! Glad Jeremy was able to help.
You can, but instead of using the Reborn rules, use the Raven rules, which is a direct inspiration to the Reborn rules and are fully integrated to the original card. Side note: These info comes from the creator of the Raven rules.
Is this similar to Plaid Hats game Summoner Wars?
They are quite different.
Ashes is more similar to a dueling game like MTG, just without randomized packs, rarities, etc. Summoner Wars uses a map/grid and the cards act more like game pieces on said board. Both are great games, but they fit different niches.
I think Luke needs to make a return for some gameplay 😃
I'd like that!
Yeah that would be so awesome! I'd love to see a rematch!
im interested in preordering Ashes Reborn... but apparently shipping from the plaid hat website costs as much as the game itself :(
I think they are working on expanding their shipping options, but yes... depending on where you live it can be pretty pricey.
@@wyz1324 Yeah, it's painful :)
SORRY!
@@WatchItPlayed Typical Canadian 😀
Do I have to use damage tokens or can I just use dice or something? Like if my pheonixborn has 16 life can I just use a d20 on 16 for his life?
For sure - you can use anything you like.
Hey Rodney! Can I use this tutorial to learn the original Ashes?
We have a video for the original Ashes, you'll find that on our channel.
Can u do alchemists next
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: th-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/w-d-xo.html&t=342
The editing tho
I feel like you forgot to explain recovery? Unless i missed it?
I think you missed it :) th-cam.com/video/vR77Rzzc7vU/w-d-xo.html
Can you enable English captions? It's only giving me Korean
Unfortunately the automatically generated captions are controlled by TH-cam and I have no idea why it generated Korean instead of English for this video. This is a bug that has been brought to TH-cam's attention, but not something that can be fixed for older videos I'm afraid.
amazing amazing game!
You'll get no argument from me :)
According to Ashes players, most changes happen on the card text
Kinda like yu gi oh. Interesting game
Thanks for checking it out!
Hi, I really link this video, but the automatic generate default subtitle becomes KOREAN not ENGLISH, so that if I change the subtitle to Chinese, It comes with wrong translation, can you let TH-cam fix this?
I’ve tried over the years to get TH-cam to fix the auto translation issues, and never had success. Frankly, I’ve given up.
Is it weird that I’m starting to watch Watch It Played for Rodney instead of the game?
Hey, always happy to have you here, no matter the reason!
@@WatchItPlayed 🤩
Pardon me for asking...is this a new camera? Your videos looked great before but now this looks really good :)
Yes, some upgrades to camera/lighting. And thank you! I hoped I could achieve an improved look for our viewers.
does this mean my cards on the way?
If you are a Team Covenant subscriber, they always send out emails before they ship their product, so if you haven't received an email notifying you of the charge + product shipment, then...unfortunately that would be no.
That said, I don't think PHG would be sponsoring Rodney to make a Watch It Played on Reborn unless they were ramping up to release very soon!
EDIT: PHG website currently says to expect subscriptions and pre-orders to ship mid-February, which means we'd receive product by late February, ideally.
I've heard "soon".
I wouldn't complain if the newer cards handled multiplayer better.
Ashes Reborn generally plays a lot faster than legacy Ashes, which should help; unfortunately multiplayer wasn't a big focus of the redesign so it's probably still a little clunky (I haven't tried it myself yet).
Yeah we need a commander version of Ashes.
I've never tried multiplayer, I'll have to some time!
I have the original Ashes with no expansions. Should I get the upgrade kit, or should I get Reborn instead?
Get the Reborn core set since you don't have the expansions.
I’d go with the upgrade kit and then just buy the new packs as they are released.
You didn’t mention how to play Strike between rounds.
I quite LITERALLY laughed out loud at that one. Well done :)
This game seems complex. I’m sure it gets good after a couple of plays.
Yes, I think you might find (especially given your prior experience with games), that once you started playing, things would click pretty quickly. The player references, and the icons/text on the cards guides a lot of the process, which is great.
Please...please do Aliens:another glorious day in the core next!!
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: th-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/w-d-xo.html&t=342
Sigh I wish I had friends to play this with
Don't give up hope - maybe you'll find some!
Not to be complaining, but were people clambering for a second edition?
Yes fans of the game even made their own fanmade expansions for the game!
I don't know if they were "clambering", but the entire project was only revived because enough players committed to buying the minimal amount of product for PHG to be able to cover development and production costs. So there are at least enough people who wanted to revive the game to justify making it again, and potentially growing beyond the original.
This is a late reply, but: YES
Brings back dark memories of my addiction to buying MtG cards. I get afraid when I see card games that have that sort of theme, I spent a lot of money and have almost 5,000 Mtg cards. I went through the 12 steps of MtG Anonymous and I wouldn’t want to go to the dark again...LOL.
I had that MtG addiction too Frank! I appreciate games like this that just give you all the cards in a set, rather than making you hunt.
