The Hindu four fold paths of life are: Kama, Artha, Dharma, and Moksha. Kama is right/proper enjoyment. Artha is right/proper acquisition of wealth/position. Dharma is the acquisition of spiritual merit. Moksha is the final liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Right/proper = Principled, Moral, Ethically acceptable. Acquisition of Spiritual Merits is of foremost importance as it is the root that gives Artha, Kama, and leads Moksha.

unfortunatly thats a thing of the past. If you see the majority of indians you will see they turned this way of spiritual life into something of the opposite, a way of belief. Most people dont even know anymore why they do what they do which is the most unhindu thing you could have done some hundred years ago. The church has tried everything they can to hide the fact that Jesus went to India after he was crucified. But everyone who is researching for 1 or 2 hours will realize that its very likely that Jesus actually was in India in his later life. Please dont take it the wrong way but Jesus was in India 2000 years ago and just as other people who have been worshipped he has also been worshipped. That you exclude him from the vedic heritage just shows you dont even understand what the vedic heritage is. It gets updated even today. People like Sadhguru or Vivekananda are showing you that it is nothing from the past but even living now and sometimes totally uncorrupted unlike many other spiritual teachers. Ive seen Jesus worship in India from north to south here and there, it has nothing to do with the portuguese who controlled goa and made it christian.

Hinduism, IMO, is a religion, but Sanatana Dharma, which is commonly thought of by many to be Hinduism, is much more than a religion. Religion is only a small part of what Sanatana Dharma is. What really bothered me is when the dance instructor said one cannot convert to Hinduism. While conversion has never been a goal of Hindus/Dharmis, one need only follow the tradition to be a part of it. In all honesty, according to Shri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, everybody is a Dharmi. We all follow our Dharma, even when we live a life of Adharma.

While I don't know the woman, I just don't understand how someone can accept the practices and be an odissi dancer but say they're not practicing hinduism they're just "admiring" it. Some people would consider that appropriating a culture or religion. I follow sanatana dharma but I prefer to not call myself a hindu do to the history behind the term and I only call myself that so that I don't confuse people.
For non-Indian Dharmikas, it is hard to figure out where you stand in the greater "Hindu" community, but our human birth is a blessing that is better spent focused on Dharma than on what names we give to the jiva. If one is so blessed as to live in a community with other "Hindus" &/or temples, then it is much easier to get along. I don't live in such a place, so I just seem a strange outsider to many. I believe its important to educate those who want to know more about our sadhanas & Vedanta, but there are many who refuse to learn yet claim authority in such matters. Kama is right/proper enjoyment.
Artha is right/proper acquisition of wealth/position.
Dharma is the acquisition of spiritual merit.
Moksha is the final liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
Right/proper = Principled, Moral, Ethically acceptable.
Acquisition of Spiritual Merits is of foremost importance as it is the root that gives Artha, Kama, and leads Moksha.

Hinduism, IMO, is a religion, but Sanatana Dharma, which is commonly thought of by many to be Hinduism, is much more than a religion. Religion is only a small part of what Sanatana Dharma is. What really bothered me is when the dance instructor said one cannot convert to Hinduism. While conversion has never been a goal of Hindus/Dharmis, one need only follow the tradition to be a part of it. In all honesty, according to Shri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, everybody is a Dharmi. We all follow our Dharma, even when we live a life of Adharma.
Thank you for saying this! While I don't know the woman, I just don't understand how someone can accept the practices and be an odissi dancer but say they're not practicing hinduism they're just "admiring" it. Some people would consider that appropriating a culture or religion.
I follow sanatana dharma but I prefer to not call myself a hindu do to the history behind the term and I only call myself that so that I don't confuse people.
For non-Indian Dharmikas, it is hard to figure out where you stand in the greater "Hindu" community, but our human birth is a blessing that is better spent focused on Dharma than on what names we give to the jiva. If one is so blessed as to live in a community with other "Hindus" &/or temples, then it is much easier to get along. I don't live in such a place, so I just seem a strange outsider to many. I believe its important to educate those who want to know more about our sadhanas & Vedanta, but there are many who refuse to learn yet claim authority in such matters. Such is not even uncommon with many "Gurus" these days. May we all fall upon the feet of our Guru & serve That One with total bhakti. HariH OM.

Hindu "religion" is term created by westerners who came to India about 500 years ago. They did not know better way to describe it. Hindus call it "Dharma" and it is not a "religion" created by a founder like Jesus or some one else. There is no one scripture (there are many) and no any head of religion, like Pope, who organize the followers. There is no concept of "Conversion". No franchises who's owner stays in Vatican city. It is not history centric. A concept Hinduism may be strange and difficult to comprehend for many westerners.
