Just the modern iterations? The original movie was in 1933, based on a novel from the 1800's, and the invisible man has always been an evil monster. It's a shame(?) that the Dark Universe fell apart because it would have been interesting to see an Avengers wannabe invisible man teaming up with Tom Cruise's mummy and Russel Crowe's dollar store Hulk.

The first name of the main character, Cecilia, is derived from the Latin Caecus which means blind or eyeless, Appropriately, she cannot see the Invisible Man. She is frequently called 'C' in the film, which, obviously, is pronounced like 'see.'
The opening sequence originally had original music written for it, but Leigh Whannell and the sound design team felt it worked better with silence and the sound of the crashing waves.
No actors' names appear at the beginning of the film.
The outside wall of the mental institution has a graffiti piece depicting Billy the Puppet, the doll the Jigsaw Killer uses in Saw (2004). Director Leigh Whannell wrote and starred in Saw (2004)

Small correction: Upgrade wasn’t Leigh Whannell’s directorial debut, Insidious 3 was. Both good directorial efforts though.

I saw the movie tonight. It was scary, in the most brilliant way. Watching this movie, you couldn’t believe the movie was only 7 million dollars. And that’s thanks to the script, director, camera shots, the actors and the music. I have no regrets. 👍👍

If anyone here can remember, I'm only saying this based on the trailers since I haven't actually seen the movie yet, but didn't this film KIND OF remind you of a movie called "Hollow Man" with Kevin Bacon?

Looking forward to seeing this and add to my viewing of the various iterations of "The Invisible Man". I enjoyed watching Elizabeth Moss during her run in "Mad Men" and seeing her character evolve from a humble & passive admin to a self-confident & strong woman- no doubt casting her in this role made sense. On a side note, I actually enjoyed Benjamin Wallfisch's cinematic scores in "Bladerunner 2049" so I'm curious to hear what he has done in "The Invisible Man". Your great review and enthusiasm Grace make me want to see this movie even more.

The thing that made this work for me is that it focuses on the abusive aspect of its villain instead of his gender. It works because there is no forced dialog every 5 seconds about men being scum.
The way this was written it would still be a terrifying situation if the genders were script. It made a statement about abuse, not one about gender, which makes it effective for both men and women of all backgrounds.

I plan on seeing it this weekend, but I have to ask -- though I'm 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999% certain what the answer is, I've seen some people claim and insist that the movie retains the Dark Universe branding, for whatever reason. I can't imagine that that's at all true, but -- does it?

    • @BeyondTheTrailer

Well technically Leigh whannells' directorial debut was insidious chapter 3 (the prequel to insidious: The last key, Insidious, and Insidious chapter 2), so technically Upgrade would be his second movie as a director.

I wonder what it would've felt like being cast as an invisible man who barely gets to say anything.. Like, you're very important to the story, but we barely need you to do anything. But you're important.
