    The accuracy with that panelled box! I need to make a Fortnite cake soon, not sure I could execute this masterpiece but I may attempt a couple of elements! Can I ask how you get the beige colour (used in the camouflage pattern number 7)? Is it just a small amount of brown gel colour?

    • @KarolynsKakes

      Thank you! It's a lot of math!
      The beige is a TEENY bit of brown, with an even smaller amount of leaf green to cancel out the pink hue in the tan.

    How do you decide when to use an edible image placed on fondant as opposed to when you cut each layer of a picture and place together? Your cakes are amazing as always

    • @KarolynsKakes

      It's either budget or aesthetics. Some people prefer the look of fondant, while others like the price of edible images!

    To say that I am in love with this cake and your technique is an understatement! I am definitely going to try this for a content cake.
    I have a question for you in regards to your fondant work. How do you quote it for a client? I’ve seen some do $/hour, others do $/piece, and other just have a set price for all fondant work. If you care to, how do you find your quote for fondant work? Thank you!

    • @KarolynsKakes

      Thank you honey!
      To be honest, I just try to figure out how long it will take me to decorate the entire cake and price it that way. I don't really have a per hour rate nor do I charge per piece. I always say that size and detail determines the price. A 2 tier cake with lots of fondant work could cost more than a simple 4 tier cake because the decorations are what takes the longest.
      That Battle Royale logo took over an hour to make!
      I have a range I usually stay in depending on how big the cake is. I tell people I charge between $5 - $30 per serving, minimum order is $200. Smaller cakes have a higher per serving price. The per serving price drops as the cake gets bigger.
      So I really don't have a chart or anything I can share with you. I've been doing this so long that I can sketch a design and figure out how long it will take me to make. And then I charge accordingly. I still don't always get it right!
      Sorry I couldn't help you more with this!

    Your X-Acto knife never seems to stick to the fondant. Mine does and it seems like I only get clean cuts when I use plastic knives but that doesn’t always work if you’re trying to do small cuts. What’s your secret? Is it a particular brand you’re using? Are you putting Crisco on the knife? I love your work. TIA

    • @victoriasmith2965

      I wonder if it's because your fondant is really soft. Could that be the reason it's sticking ?

    • @KarolynsKakes

      I only use marshmallow fondant and I add the GumTex / Tylose powder so it stiffens up. Store bought fondant is notoriously soft and it doesn’t set as hard with the Tylose as Marshmallow Fondant does. That could be your issue?

    • @paulinewilcox153

      @@victoriasmith2965 it certainly isn’t hard, but it’s not overly soft either. My plastic knife slides easily but it’s big and wide and sometimes you need something that is much smaller for the fine cuts. Maybe I will try to purchase another brand of X-Acto knife, but you wouldn’t think it would make a difference. They’re all metal blades.

    • @KarolynsKakes

      Less is more! It's easy to over do it. I only pull the trigger back ever so slightly to have better control of the spray. The closer you hold the gun to the cake, the more defined the lines will be.

    • @KarolynsKakes

      Also, it's best to work in lighter coats, rather than doing one heavy coat of color!

  • @mgalindo1781

    How high is each torted piece? And how much filling is between each layer. I have trouble deciding how high each cake should be. Uhh

    • @KarolynsKakes

      I like to bake in 2" high pans. So when I torte a 2" high cake, each layer is approx. 1" tall. I try not to make the filling too thick when I torte the layers, so there's about 1/3" thick filling in between each layer, making the tier approx. 5" tall.
