This reminds me of when I first started seeing articles/videos about playing Windows games (I think the first game I saw was KOTOR II) on Linux a decade+ ago. I was pretty skeptical and pessimistic and things turned out much better than I thought. It will be interesting to see where gaming on FreeBSD will go. Thanks for the video.
I have 303 games in steam and about 240 work in FreeBSD with Mizuma. The gaming performance seems to surpass Linux as well. DX12 should be available soon as well so more games will be compatible soon. Still no rockstar titles though. Kind of a bummer. Great video!
@simonsomething2620 NobaraOS 36 and Fedora 36 would be my latest systems as a reference. I don't currently use that system anymore so currently I don't know how they match up. I did recently install a NobaraOS system for a cousin and compared Xorg and Wayland on both systems on the same hardware using glmark2 just out of curiosity and freebsd did outperform NobaraOS at that time in that benchmark on both wayland and Xorg. It's a synthetic test of course but I still find it interesting.
@simonsomething2620When Apple was building OS X they gave a lot back to the BSDs. I’m pretty sure Sony does the same. BeOS was based on BSD, as was SunOS. The BSDs have a long history of kernel development and optimization for graphics and audio. I’m not surprised that FreeBSD can be made to perform very well. Plus there are several other BSDs, all focusing on different aspects of the kernel. If I decide to move away from my mainstream OS, I’ll definitely start with FreeBSD for everyday tasks.
WINE9 was finally fixed!!! They also got rid of that annoying bit where it would report wrong OS when trying to install the 32bit mesa dri. Here's what I discovered: - Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory plays correctly (requires a keyboard to usb control mapper). - RPG Maker 2003 and MZ are both working and the games also play. - Steam (through WINE) broke, reports SteamUI dll cannot load. - Steam (Linuxulator) still works. *Rec Room and Dead by Daylight would not load back on Proton 7, skipped Proton 8 due to that mesa dri wrong os nonsense, but with Proton 9 the games actually load up and get past that easy Anti-Cheat splash. They still won't connect due to some remaining issues. - Adobe Animate (versions 2019 - 2023) actually launch! Creating a new document doesn't work, but opening an exiting one does for a second. I saw my website/assets on screen, but the program crashes a moment after. We're sooooooo close, thing's are finally coming together. Still, I may have to VM for specific things like MC Bedrock and Adobe Illustrator with plotter (graphtec).
instead of vim, you can just use the freebsd easy editor ( ee ) it comes with the system by default since forever ago. Its more like windows note pad, to close and save just use control + c and and yes to the prompt
thats the reason why freebsd and his distros never be a same like linux distros i mean simple things like drivers too complicate they should make it simple like linux first
Linux is like this too, but in the last 10 years more and more distros have started bundling non-free software/firmware/drivers. BSD folks seem to be more hesitant to do that kind of thing from what I can tell.
I will stay on Linux for now, as this looks all too much like switching from windows to Linux did 10 years ago, but it's great to see there is an alternative in case something insane happens in the Linux world and we need to jump ship.
I'm reverting from Linux to FreeBSD. I have read the Rootless Root, and I testify that UNIX is the one true operating system, and FreeBSD is the implementation of UNIX.

Not true. Apple shared a lot of the work they did on macOS with the BSD foundation. Parts of macOS are still open source. It’s more similar to some Linux distros than you might think. Besides, I thought part of the fun of being a Linux user was in the effort of building a customizing your own system. I see more and more Linux users moving to one of the BSDs for the same reason they moved to Linux in the first place.
I will never fully understand why the freebsd environment is not capable of developing its own things without waiting for them to appear out of inertia. Only now can you play decently on freebsd, but nowhere near better than on Linux, only thanks to copying what is done on Linux for many years. It's always the same, they will say what they want about their file system, wiki (which arch and gentoo far surpass), etc; In Linux it is always done sooner with more variants and better. Aai, I will never understand those airs of elitism of the BSD environment in general when they depend on Linux for everything; Be careful, I don't consider bsds to be garbage, it's just that they are better in some areas than Linux, but Linux is much better in the vast majority of cases
Is that what happens to linux users when playing game on linux is too easy?
Yes hahaha
Yes. I’m proof of that.
I had to go back but will gladly go back to FreeBSD when the Linux userland gets updated.
No, when Linux users think using Linux is too easy they install NixOS in their main working computer before Monday.
YOLO.
Er, I guess? I just like FreeBSD.
@@librequestpodcastHey I saw your post on the FreeBSD forum asking why suyimazu wasn't working did you get that fixed?
I love how with all the debating about Linux being a viable Gaming Platform we have people all like "Hold my beer, Imma make it work on FreeBSD"

Um I have like 2500 at this point. Let's just say Linux never refused to run something for me yet but I'll find it eventually, I'm sure.

I don't think I'm too far from swapping to BSD.
If anything I'm awaiting some improvement to wayland support. It is all in all, so much nicer than X.
instead of wget, you can just use the fetch command. Comes with the base system and does the same thing when wanting to retrieve a file using URI
Or curl -O
Great man. Very good. I will try to follow these procedures in classic FreeBsd. Congratulation for this video.

would be fine when you write all commands in your video description.
i will got with bsd on my desktop when there is one ready command: pkg install steam

Any luck on newer games?

I would definitely agree that Free BSD is better than Linux for the support and documentation.
Linux is a kernel it's upto the distro but the Arch wiki is very very great for linux and maybe any *nix system if you are looking for a unix thing
@@Seofthwa arch and gentoo wiki are much more complete than freebsd by far
Hello, everyone !
Very good !
Great video. Can you show same thing but using Wayland?
Should be the same process, as most games use XWayland, so there shouldn't be anything Wayland specific.
Some tests say that performance exceeds windows and Linux... Can someone confirm? How is the compatibility compared between Linux?

Wait, no audio? 🔊

Can Heroic Games Launcher be setup on BSD ?
It should be posible. I just tried to run directly one of my previously downloaded Epic Games store games and it worked.

Cool.
Because according yo Heroic Game Launcher website, BSD version is not available, only Linux Windows and Mac OS.
