In the final progress diary from this stage of the Elite: Dangerous development cycle, David Braben talks us through some of his highlights of the year, and gives his thanks to all those involved.
Elite Dangerous is definitely the space sim of the year. You guys did an awesome job. And when you're back from your holidays, I hope we can look forward to lots of much needed and much appreciated updates and fixes. If you guys can ramp up the missions, online coop, and make the entire engagement with the storyline more immediate, Elite will stand the test of time. Here's hoping for large fleet battles between capital ships (not just a single one), more varied missions, spying, setting ambushes, getting double-crossed by your contractors, and experiencing all of that together with friends in coop. The foundation is there, and it is solid. Now, it all depends on you adding more flavor and richness. Thanks a lot for Elite.

***** There lots of MMO components to the game. An it is a massive multi player,events taking place in the Lugh system could only happen with hundreds or even thousands of players all working together.

Or you can do what I did, and do it on 1 cinematic monitor... and still get the same experience. My 29" beauty really does give me Elite like no other. A really nice and bright IPS panel. And being Asus its just the best. ;)
GTX 980, X55, Rift DK2 I can't really dream of a better setup right now that what I already have. I should not forget that when playing this game. (Oh, and I have a Subpac S2 coming)
I'm only 16 but when I started watching shows like Doctor Who I started to get interested in astronomy, I started to dream of exploring the Galaxy. Now that this game is out and I can play it with little to no lag I can say that this game is a dream come true. I eagerly await further updates to this game to add to what is already a highly immersive and breath taking experience.
I was the same age when I played one of the older Elite games, Frontier. It was a similar experience of opening my eyes to the wonder of the galaxy. Great to hear this experience is happening for others too.
Ok, guys, think about this.. I got to see the 1960's Dr. who..and later versions (if I found them) even a few of the movies made...as well as the original broadcast of Star trek..And played Elite and Elite 2...when they were released(hard to find) During that time I saw many movies, and series about Space..including ANTS the size of houses..And Godzilla, as they hit the Theaters..(yes, Im old) Iv played many games over the years, and I played Elite 2 for 5 years, until all my copies DIED...(they do that) Still have the Elite 2 map on my wall.. LOVED this game and it how'd me that THINGS can work. as in real..Get TIRED of games that dont have a real market balance...even single player games over the years NEVER had this. ELITE DID, and still does. Just wish I had a Larger monitor..and could SET the size of my HUD display to fit it..

It captured my imagination and my imagination in turn filled out the blanks of that game back then. I am now a premium backer and its very gratifying seeing this new game appeal and capture the imagination of a whole new generation of starry eyed players...
MarquisRex I agree..its one of the FIRST open ended games with alot of features THAT WORK..I was playing in my 20's.. IMHO, this game could of been monetized, a few more times over the years with SOLID changes and updates over the years. Waiting 30 years REALLY sucked. NO one ever really, got the ideas and concepts of what WAS in Elite. There is so much in it. and the First programs FIT on a floppy disk..Even now, its, Fairly, compact..I dont have to have TONS of space to run this game. I have a few friends that would LIKE to play, but the basic config on the site scares them..
I've always loved Daves enthusiasm for the project. Been a big fan of Mr Braben since I was 8 years old, and I can say he's not disappointed me in 25 years. If you buy Elite expecting hand holding, cut scenes, and huge set pieces then you bought the wrong game. Elite has always, and will always be about creating your own stories and adventures, and this incarnation does that flawlessly.
Thank YOU, David, and your team for making this dream come true! I have played every installment in the Elite series from my C64 onwards and this is what I have been longing for since like 30 years.
Watching the game develop and progress, as I played premium beta all the way to final release has been great. I can't wait for the ability to walk around the ships/space stations and planetary landings. Top job by the team, thoroughly enjoy playing the game. All i can say is i grew up playin Elite frontier on Amiga! I was watching the video and realised that this isn t just a game... its a man life dream... tge passion the he demonstrates while he talks shows that... i wish him and the game nothing but good things... i will buy it for sure.
Neil would probably point out all these things that are wrong with orbits and many other things about the science of the galaxy and then they will update the game.
Gaeuvyen Just to let you know, FD had/has a nice guy by the name of "Dr Wookie" in the DDF (Design and Discussion forum). A fine chap working for NASA who specialised in Black Holes and such. I doubt FD are that far off the mark with their galaxy simulation. My guess is, Neil would be majorly impressed with ED, I mean any thing that gets people to think about our place in this wide galaxy, wide universe has got to be a good thing (even more so for young minds). Give Neil an Oculus a togged out Asp Explorer and let him go do that ... explore! It would blow his mind. :)
Dreamed of this day for decades. And you delivered just the game I backed for and some. Don't let yourself get down from all those wanting a more directed mmo story game. This free style sandbox game is just what we need. I wager, we will get a more directed space game with SC. And that is good. Delivering different experience's for different audience is the way to go. And kindle the light of innovation.

I swore I would never buy an always online game, and I won't ever again... I am making Elite Dangerous an exception to the rule. It will also be the first game outside of DCS: World that I will be paying full price for in quite a while. Looks brilliant!
The game has been all I expected and more. Having been in on day one of several online games over the years i can honestly say yours was the most trouble free I have ever known. Great Jobs guys.

I'm pretty sure David Braben said in a recent (in the last month) video that ED would not be available via Steam. Something to do with the server set up. Someone correct me if I'm misremembering.

Congratulations on a good year and a successful release! It so great to see how much actual science was really hidden inside the game. All those small details and the wish to really go and explore... it is so exciting to see Elite being back on the screen after 30 years. I am really looking forward to get my hands on the Mac beta soon! The 55" is already connected to the comp and the HOTAS system ist mounted to fit in front of it... Be sure, to have my support :). Love this company. Can't stop watching the vid's on TH-cam. Frontier have certainly started somewhat of a revolution in gaming. This is the most excitement I have seen over a VR compatible game. Congrats to Frontier and hope you get some much deserved time with friends and family this holiday.

Aside from having the whole galaxy to play in, and the fact that the Oculus Rift support is mind-blowingly good, I have to say the audio in Elite Dangerous really is the icing on the cake. Well done Frontier, you guys have not just created a fantastic game, but a work of art.

One thing to pick out: if you've got a halfway decent audio setup... all these crisp and unique sound gimmicks and effects... it's not just the "common blip" - it's one big thing about ED that *really* stands out, so how could it possibly be forgotten? I never backed this game but I regret it. I did Pre-order it though a day before release and have been playing it ever since. Love the game very much. What a gent! Elite:Frontier is still my favourite, but when they add planetary landings that could change, this game is very immersive, mostly due to the sound and star ports, I can't wait to see the next batch of developments for this, well done all at Frontier Developments.
I've been very busy this year, but I've had time on each of the pre-release versions. It's been fun, only I wish I could've got more twitch streams recorded and uploaded to TH-cam. Now we are at release ( and it's brillant ! ) I'm looking forward to the coming year when I'll have more time on it. A great first release !

Congratulations for the great work you did. :) I must say that I had been expecting this game for 20 years. :) Since First Encounters and Frontier. :) It was worthy to wait. :) And it's great to see the change in constelations changing while jumping from system to system. Along with alot of other features that you guys put in the game. The only thing it's missing is to land on planets like we could do in Frontier and First Encounters. But well... I really enjoy Elite Dangerous. Thank you for your work guys! It is awsome!!! :-)

It's looking good and good to see a video from the boss. The direction the game is going in is clearer and people should have even more confidence in buying it so I've become impressed. The project feels more defined and focused with the biggest reason being that the offline side of things no longer on the table. Despite what many have said I feel it is highly positive as I only play online. The timing of release is perfect (obviously no accident) and I'm guessing the holiday profits will be big enough to ensure this game has a long future. No reason someone should be concerned about buying it. Good work on bringing me around and have a happy new year. #elitedangerous #MMO

Today I had to take a "rest" from the game...since launch I played like a mad...not 24/7 though but I played over the nights till daylight and then slept all day long...like a "vampire" life. lol So I had to rest today...but tomorrow...I'll start with exploration with my Cobra MkIII, some updated scanners and armed to the teeth. (Yeah I also do some bounty hunting to make money over my journey) ;) Thank you for this game...this massive game, and Happy holidays for everyone in the team and the players who are as crazy or even more crazy than me. :D

Do they sell those Elite insignia pins on their website? I saw that on his shirt and just wanted one instantly. Also: Thank *you* Mr. Braben, for leading the development of Elite: Dangerous. This has easily taken over as my favorite game of all time. It's just like the original 1984 game, that, sadly, I didn't get to play until a few years ago, but surpasses it in almost every way. I think we have a lot in common, and I feel as though I share the same vision for the complete game as you do. Absolutely every detail is right down to perfection, and I can't wait to see everything else that comes in the future.

Love this company. Can't stop watching the vid's on TH-cam. Frontier have certainly started somewhat of a revolution in gaming. This is the most excitement I have seen over a VR compatible game. Congrats to Frontier and hope you get some much deserved time with friends and family this holiday.

Aside from having the whole galaxy to play in, and the fact that the Oculus Rift support is mind-blowingly good, I have to say the audio in Elite Dangerous really is the icing on the cake. Well done Frontier, you guys have not just created a fantastic game, but a work of art.

One thing to pick out: if you've got a halfway decent audio setup... all these crisp and unique sound gimmicks and effects... it's not just the "common blip" - it's one big thing about ED that *really* stands out, so how could it possibly be forgotten?

Agreed. They've done an amazing job on the audio. When you realise you're tracking enemy ships in dogfights by sound you know it's something special.

What a gent! Elite:Frontier is still my favourite, but when they add planetary landings that could change, this game is very immersive, mostly due to the sound and star ports, I can't wait to see the next batch of developments for this, well done all at Frontier Developments.

I've been very busy this year, but I've had time on each of the pre-release versions. It's been fun, only I wish I could've got more twitch streams recorded and uploaded to TH-cam. Now we are at release ( and it's brillant ! ) I'm looking forward to the coming year when I'll have more time on it. A great first release !

A great game that will get better as time goes on. I am on my way to a star that a friend bought for her mum that has sadly passed away. I know its just a computer game but it let's us see things from another perspective especially in a DK2.

It's looking good and good to see a video from the boss.
The direction the game is going in is clearer and people should have even more confidence in buying it so I've become impressed. The project feels more defined and focused with the biggest reason being that the offline side of things no longer on the table. Despite what many have said I feel it is highly positive as I only play online.
The timing of release is perfect (obviously no accident) and I'm guessing the holiday profits will be big enough to ensure this game has a long future. No reason someone should be concerned about buying it.

Today I had to take a "rest" from the game...since launch I played like a mad...not 24/7 though but I played over the nights till daylight and then slept all day long...like a "vampire" life. lol
So I had to rest today...but tomorrow...I'll start with exploration with my Cobra MkIII, some updated scanners and armed to the teeth. (Yeah I also do some bounty hunting to make money over my journey) ;)

Do they sell those Elite insignia pins on their website? I saw that on his shirt and just wanted one instantly.
Also: Thank *you* Mr. Braben, for leading the development of Elite: Dangerous. This has easily taken over as my favorite game of all time. It's just like the original 1984 game, that, sadly, I didn't get to play until a few years ago, but surpasses it in almost every way. I think we have a lot in common, and I feel as though I share the same vision for the complete game as you do. Absolutely every detail is right down to perfection, and I can't wait to see everything else that comes in the future.
They do sell those pins on the online store as well as other cool merch.
