      @@MarvelMaster There are hundreds of tutorials shaping hair in blender, the key is to make it work in UE4.25. I wonder whether you see this, cause it seems very complex in doc, and you just show part of it in the video.

    Thanks for this tutorial - awesome! As a general comment, there are plenty of Blender grooming tutorials out there, many good ones.
    However: From what I can see there are literally hundreds of “Blender grooming” options that you can play with, and there are probably modifiers and addons that will enhance what you can do. The 100K question that we need to be answered is however, what will transfer and be useful in UE4. That is, you can easily spend hours perfecting the hair in Blender, but what will make it into UE4, and what will be lost/replaced when you start adding UE4 groom/Niagara to the equation…? (My guess would be that you should NOT spend too much time getting it perfect in Blender; UE4 will likely disregard a lot of that, replace it or even get messed up by some clever tweak… )
    We need more awesome tutorials, like this one, and we need a place to share this. Is the UE4 forum the better place...?

    Is there a way to get around the alembic export bug if you only have a single object in your scene. I'm playing around with converting a mesh to curves, and exporting. Unreal then recognises it as a groom, but it does the crazy thing when I try to enable simulation. Appreciate any help or suggestions.

    when i import hair to UE, it's showing, i think it is there but it is too small to see, because i can still see the gizmo on the view port. any solution? i did the scale when i export it

    Thank you! But I'm really new, like started using UE4 and blender 2 weeks ago and don't know how much hair can I import. Or how would I do for 2 side(Top and side) hair particle. I just learned hairs in blender last night and it kept me awake whole night. A detailed tutorial would be much appreciated for newbie like me.

    I'm working in UE version 4.25.4 and can't reimport the skeletal mesh (as alembic) without the program crashing on me. I have tried deactivating "export hair & particles" but nothing seems to work. Is it the UE version? Do you have any suggestions what I could try?
    I would be happy with getting even a static groom to stick to my avatar..

      Try blender 2.9 and in rendering settings of the groom uncheck show emitter

      I finally got it to work once I removed the textures in the particle settings. They did not translate to Unreal. Now it's not crashing on the "2nd import" anymore.
      Although, I'm still having an issue with getting the scalp to follow the head. It follows the root but not the head/skeleton. 🤔🤔
      Might be something with this specific skeleton mesh (I'm using CC3)?

    Great tutorial! that workflow is abit weird like reexporting the skeletal mesh to make the hair work.. I hope you update the tutorial it things change with the workflow.

    at 6:55 why is it that you delete the curves and reexport the Mannequin again on top of the file in Unreal?

    This was perfect thanks! Seems like such a strange system to export the fbx of the character to the location before reimporting. I'll trying that out tomorrow morning.

      I spent all day but I think it works on my end. Lots of details to think about in Blender. One being that if you use multiple hairs/materials you need to bring down the number of children they have from 10/1000. I have 5 curve driven particles and brought them each down to 3/300 and now it stopped crashing. I could write a book about the landmines that could get you in this process but this video was definitely the final piece to the puzzle.

    Thanks a ton for the tutorial, playing with simulated hair is a blast. Though I am wondering how I can change the hair color, since changing the material of the groom component to a [Used with Hair Strands] material does not change the hair's color. Has anyone by any chance figured out how to change the hair color?

      After doing a thorough search of the Unreal forums, I finally got redirected to this resource. docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/Engine/HairRendering/QuickStart/index.html Apparently, I needed to set the [Shading Model] of the material to [Hair] as well, and now I can change my hair color! If you're stuck, read this entire link just in case you missed something.

    To grow hair on zebras, etc., it is necessary to set root_uv. thank you!

      Not possible in Blender but you could make 2 separate groom assets

    I tried to repeat all the steps. Everything went well except when I enabled the hair physics, the hairs disappear and everything gets very slow. UE4 4.25 preview 6 blender 2.82a

    Thanks so much for making and sharing this tutorial. It is gold! I do have one question - what's the deal with importing from Blender twice? First the hair curves and then the skeletal mesh. I'd love to know how you figured this out and what is actually happening that requires these steps.

      Well only standalone curves/particles trigger the groom importer but only particles work as dynamic groom in ue4...so thats the reason for converting first to curve because if you export directly as particle the base mesh is always exported too which will not trigger the groom importer. But when already have a groom asset imported and hit reimport in ue4 it takes only the particles part of the export...thats why the second import. I found this out by trying many things for litrraly hours until i found the pattern. If there was a way to directly export the hairparticle without the mesh we wouldnt need the double import

      @@philboltt I think so...we would basically need to adjust the alembic exporter code to have a checkbox to only export particles...its not implemented yet cause its a very specific usecase I think

    Lets say you animal has 10 hair on viewport, on render time this is 100 , so when your exporting , you have to set the hair to 100 otherwise the look wont come, if its set to 100 and then u try to convert the mesh into spline..... its takes a long time and crashes. cus that is a lot ofmesh to convert to spline. is there a better work flow for this ?
    CUs in general all hair workflows deoend on the render multiplier for the final look, cus it would be imposible to work with so much hiar in the viewport.

    I brought my hair from zbrush, used hairnet with the fibermesh selection. How do I attach the hair to my Mesh scalp? Really dying here. Horrible day trying to figure this mess out. When I export it as alembic, it doesn't show up in ue, although the file is imported.

      @@MarvelMaster thanks for the response :) I'm on pc using blender. I can see my alembic file now, just when I drag it in scene, it's invisible. My emitter is the actual fibers, they don't extend from a scalp. I'll see what I can do.

    hi , im testing maya to unreal hair is fine , but i wonder if dynamics are scale sensitive, my animal is very small , and i feel dynamics are wrong , even if touch stiffness the hair looks like a big mass dynamic , last year i used hair works and was better even if quite painful to export with some special needs , this new hair system is very easy to export even with yeti attributes but then looking and dynamics seems a bit worse?

      Hm are you sure you have also multiple steps on short hair? I don't know if it's scale sensitive

      @@MarvelMaster yes finally i make all character with hair inside unreal multiply by 10 the scale and dynamics are better , my maya model was really small.... so seems scale sensitive

    Hello, I'm having this issue and hope you can help me : when I'm importing the groom as you did in this tut, it works fine. but when I'm trying to add children to the groom - ue4.26 crushing on second import. any idea what to do to fix it? I'm using blender 2.91 and unreal engine 4.26 (it happened in 4.25 also)

      Try use the 4.26 tutorial also you should not add children to the groom but to the skeletal mesh

      I dont Understand one thing: why those Hairs are in kinda a OPACITY 0 ... like a transparent, UNTIL i press PLAY , why parameters sholud i changed it to see those Hairs normal in VIEPORT while editing etc. Thanks.

    Hello, I'm exporting hair in alembic format with the Blender program. I got the same hair many times on the Ue4 program, no problem.       scale: 100
      frame start-end: 1-1
      selected objects and visible objects ticked,
      and finally the show emitter tick was off. I followed the tutorial. Is there anything wrong?

      Better use the latest tutorial but apart from the whole blender thing you can use maya and/or its plugins

    Hey, I followed the tutorial and it seems to work well in UE 4.25, but when doing the same process in 4.26 there appears to be a strange box shadow that appears on the ground occasionally, any idea what's causing this? Maybe shadow density or something? Baking the lighting and doing real-time lighting doesn't seem to work, at least I don't think.

      Disable "Voxelize" checkbox in the groom settings. You'll have to find it idpn't exactly remember where it is

      Fbx will only export a static mesh

      what do you mean? animate the hair in blender? Because the Hair follows every character animation ingame

      well this environment is made by CryZENx as you might have notices...we are working in team atm and there will be playable demos... but as long as I am not making my own version of that environment it wont be publicy available

    Hello there. thanks for the video. 4.25 previerw 6 would crash if I tried to activate simulation. In preview 7 (4.25) groom imports fine and looks good, but I can't find "turn on simulation" box to turn on.. and adding niagra componet doesn't seem to activate the simulation.
    How do you activate simulation in preview 7? Are you certina hair groom simulation now works in preview 7? :)

      In 4.25 adding niagra manually is not requiert anymore.

    Can hair groom work with facial morph targets ? I mean will facial hairs follow animation if its made with morph targets ?

      hm have not tried that but I read that it follows the vertex so in theory it could work...I might give it a shot

      @@MrJonathanwolff It just takes a very long time to process. It took for me around an 1 hour. But once it's done you have no issues.

      be sure that you dont use 100 child strands in blender!

      @@MarvelMaster I only used 10. I also noticed on part two of this that you didn't convert them to curves before exporting. Was that just a step skipped in the video to make it move quicker or did you actually not need to convert them?

    Also how demanding or taxing is it when it comes to performance and is there a way to export a particle system from Blender to Unreal Engine?

      The plugins are integrated into unreal...performance depends on amount of hair but is at least too bad for games...and there is not other way for the particle import.

    UE4 4.25 preview 7 same files than before. Now physics work fine but I see only the selection outline, the hair is not rendering at all. May be it is my own problem. Can you check yourself ?

      yes exactly its hair particles and they import to unreal engine as alembic file...you will see

      in 4.24 it works but you have to add a niagra component to it...there is another tutorial on youtube about this where a dude uses cinema4d
