Jackery vs EcoFlow vs Gas Generator - Which will Power a Small AC Unit?

  • In this "Will it Run it" video series, I'm on a search to see what power source can run a mechanical controlled 5k BTU Window AC unit. Eventually I will want to add this to my Tiny Toy Hauler that I'm currently building (check out my playlist for videos on that topic if you are interested). I'm toying with the idea of getting one large solar generator and using it instead of trying to get a battery, converter, inverter, charger, etc...
    The results of todays video may surprise you... they surprised me for sure!

    An ‘Air Conditioner Soft Starter’ would solve the issue of the massive amp draw spike when the compressor kicks on for the first time. With one of those devices I bet you could run the AC on the smallest unit.

    Just a suggestion would be to list the actual model numbers of what you are testing and even affiliate links you could make money and you could also help people that are actually trying to figure out which units to purchase. Units like this are quite expensive and you could actually earn a pretty substantial affiliate income while making it easier for people to make decisions

    I’m not an expert but I do believe the ac has a starter capacitor the will charge up after being plugged in for a while. This capacitor will help boost the compressor for startups. Because you tried the smaller jackery first and the ac wasn’t plugged in for very long it did Tver that charge to the capacitor which caused the startup to rely only on the jackery. The other sources benefited from being plugged in and the capacitor had some boost to assist starts. Try the jackery again after the ac is plugged in for a while.

      The 12v output port on the Ecoflow is regulated and I believe only maxes out at 8 amps. You need hundreds of amps to jump a car. Even plugged into shoreline it wouldn't be up for the task. I suggest looking into a NOCO for a jump starter. The NOCO jumpers are designed for very low reserve capacity, but very high cranking amps whereas the Ecoflow is designed for high watt capacity and lower current draw.

Amazing how dark it is at night when you're the only one for miles with power, lights and ac. The generator runs like a champ even in hurricanes wind and rain. Yes you can - it comes with the cord to do so. However, it limits itself to 8 amps when plugged into a 12v socket. Would like to see a how long it will run in an actual camper, where the temperature will drop and the compressor won't need to run all the time. Every time I see a test with batteries and A/C it is done in a garage or something with the door open. Which is great if you are trying to cool off the world, but not realistic as far as how it would work in a small camper. That and a comparison of say an 80 degree day versus a 90+ degree day.
    My guess though is anyone trying to run A/C for a camper on battery power is going to want to run the A/C at night, when the temps would be cooler, but the humidity is higher.

Hoping to have some better figures in the future though. The delta can recharge fast, and I had a gen on remote start. • @1FAST91SONOMA
      @1FAST91SONOMA 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@uthe54 I did the same with the ebay refurb when costco was out of stock. Just an FYI, you can run the river dead and stick the add on battery on to keep drawing power. So you could get a bunch of batteries and run for a LONG time. I hadnt seen any reviews showing that test so I had to do it myself to find out. Im debating just getting a LIFEPO4 12V battery and running it isolated in my overlanding rig so it can directly power 12V devices w/o inverter losses and connect the River to it so the River gets 100W out for charging while driving or I could connect the River to solar for 200W charging, leaving the River specifically for the devices that need 120V (12V inversion loss is 5wh, 120v loss is closer to 30wh according to the ecoflow user forums im on)

    • @uthe54
      @uthe54  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hadn't ever thought of that, but that's a great idea! I just wish you could then recharge the extra batteries stand alone somehow without the primary ecoflow unit. Seems like using them in this regard would make it tough to manage recharging them all.

    • @1FAST91SONOMA
      @1FAST91SONOMA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@uthe54 that is why I wont be buying any more add-on batteries. They were a great deal on black friday when they were only $275 but with no other way to charge them it doesnt make sense to own multiple unless ecoflow makes a standalone charger for them... which should be relatively easy to do considering the cable and connection. That should contain all critical battery signals so the only thing the charger would need to do is convert input power to the necessary voltage for these cells and balance charge them same as the unit does. They could probably use the exact same circuitry as the main unit just on a simpler, smaller board. Now that I think about it it seems odd that they havent done exactly that. They'd have a small, powerful unit that can run however long you need just by swapping batteries. If the main unit's battery was used as a UPS for swapping the external battery then it would never even turn off your devices when you make the swap. IDK about you but that sounds pretty appealing to me.

    I would say if you want to use a generator, get one with 2000 W peak rating at the very least. Of course, if you have the cash, spend it on a good, renowned generator name like Honda. These are by far the least noisy, best output, the sine wave actually looks like a sine wave and can have a peak higher than the rated peak.
    I've never really been a fan of such large batteries as even the small ones have shown, are a great way to turn your house into a bonfire.
