When people think of Ryanair they think of Michael O'Leary, but in fact (as this documentary shows) O'Leary was a mere 'bagman' for Tony Ryan. It was Tony Ryan who saw the market for an aircraft leasing company (GPA) and mortgaged his own family home to finance it. He took a huge risk because he had a vision and believed in it. He rose from very humble beginnings, to being the owner of a world leading corporation. And when it failed, he rose again, like a phoenix from the ashes, and created another world leading company. I dislike O'Leary intensly, he is a self promoter and charlatan IMHO. But Tony Ryan I hhave a lot of respect for him. May he rest in peace. I worked with Cathal for a while during the Nigerian years and he was a regular one of the lads. He died too young, just 47. Rest in Peace Cathal.
I agree. The key point is that it was Tony Ryan who sent O'Leary to the US to model Ryanair on the no frills Southwest Airlines and it's that business model that grew Ryanair to success. O'Leary's advice as confirmed here was to close Ryanair down.
