I have never used this type of hibiscus. I have read that not all hibiscus are edible, and some may cause you to get sick. I am currently growing a variety called roselle hibiscus. The whole plant is edible and leaves have a sour/acidic taste to them along with the calyx. It is a very different looking plant, so I wouldn't recommend treating all hibiscus the same.

What you have is also known as sorrel and goes by many names, but is not related plant to the hibiscus plant in the video. They have similar benefits as well. I use the same flower type you have to make a Jamaican drink, Sorrel for the holidays. Cheers

My grandmother has about 6 of these plants. She planted them when I was born and at my age (24) they’re almost tree looking. We used to feed them to our Iguanas and turtles, but never knew we could eat them or even make tea out of them. Really good to know!!!

The only hibiscus I know of to have medicinal value is Hibiscus sabdariffa...I'm not sure that other hibiscus species are edible or not. But traditionally sabdariffa is the species used in Herbalism and you use the calyx or the closed flower. I'm finishing a 700hr herbal program taught by herbalist who own herb stores and have done clinical work for years out of Arizona.
