  • How expensive is Belgrade, Serbia? In todays video we will be visiting an outdoor market in Belgrade. There are plenty of outdoor markets throughout the city, but the one we will be visiting is located in the Dorcol neighborhood. I will take you with me as I shop for some of the important things that I need for my week and I will show you exactly how much you can buy for just 10 USD. We will pick ourselves up some fruits, veggies, toiletries, and some Serbian honey. I hope you enjoy this beautiful market tour in Belgrade, Serbia.

I also enjoy ur videos so much, they are really funny to me and they lift up my mood i guess because u try to talk sebiran and it sounds weird to me (no offence of course) and i love seeing people from different countries enjoying Serbia, i'm really glad you like it ❤️❤️❤️

Ummm I think that lady actually gave you a few apples more than a kilo, that's why she said 50. usually, it would be 40 or 45 din, but the weight was over the kilogram so she said I will just put it to be 50 din since it is easier to trade that way :D That was the point with apples. Non important information, but I just felt like I need to share that :)

    Things good to know.
When you go shopping at any outdoor market in Serbia it is a custom to left some small tip, like 5-10-20 dinars.
For example, if your bill is like 230 or 240 and you give em 250 it is nice (not a must) not to wait for exchage, just say it ok. Or your bill is 210,and you have 220, just say it ok.
It is not a must, you do not have to if you do not want, nobody says anything but with just 10 or 20 dinars you will show respect to those people who are outside at cold/hot all day who selling their produces. Especially if you are regular, come back, customer. With that gesture you will build realtion with sellers, they will remember you and probably will give you little more next time or give you daily fresh fruit, meat, vegetables etc.
With that small tips you build up relationship with them. And that is always good.

I would also add that I am sorry because many people do not know English, that is the only reason why they do not speak, in this case with you, otherwise they would have an even better sense of our hospitality.

At 2:50 above the kinder surprise eggs there seems to be a homemade strudel with poppy seeds (you can see 5 of them with black thing in the middle). You definitely want to try that. Just make sure your teeth are clean before going in public since poppy tends to stick to them and it looks awkward when you realize you walked around the city with black teeth for a few hours.
Also, at the stand where you bought the apples, there was homemade ajvar and ren. Ajvar you probably already tried in restaurants, if not, you should definitely buy it. It is a spread made from grilled red peppers. You can usually get blagi (mild) and ljuti (hot). Ren is a spread/dip made from horseradish, and tastes similar to wasabi, but it's white. It's not for everyone but if you like wasabi taste, you can maybe buy a small package of ren.

Advice: it is acceptable, normal and recommendable on Serbian markets for you to pick fruit on your own piece of fruits. Most of them wont screw you up purposely of course, but will not spend too much time in picking best ones. There is some situations when they tell you you cant pick on your own, for example the plums, because touching leave it with fingerprints and some people dont want to buy it any more.

My father also works with only highschool in administration and makes about the same (maybe a bit more with bonuses) and its enough for decent life of 2 adults and 2 children. Basically prices vary from 50 cents to up 2 bucks per kilo depending on if it is a season for a fruit/vegetable or nope. Eggs are like 15-20 cents per egg. As for the meats expect prices 6 bucks and more per kilo depending ofc on which kind of meat. As for the cheese, prices are usually 5 bucks and more. And overall it varies from seller to seller.
But if you are interested into more precise prices, you can check out websites of bigger supermarkets here cuz you can order from them directly, like maxi rs.

I was just thinking about that , even tho he didn't cover vegetables in this video, vegetables are much cheaper than here in Canada /Calgary to be precise. I used to leave on the farm in Western Serbia and we would grow bell peppers , potatoes, tomatoes, onions, etc... and sell them on the flea market. In cities prices are higher than country side but i would say it's cheaper in Serbia at least 3x , if you go to country side 5x easily, especially when vegetables are in the season. On the safe side most of it is non GMO and grown by family farms.

I would say that the honey would've been about 10 USD, the apples about 5 USD, Oranges 5 USD, Paper towels 5 USD and the nuts about the same! Farmers markets are generally more expensive and anything with an "organic" logo is easily double ahahah
