      When the Patriots were up for sale, one of the groups of potential owners that was bidding on the team was from Nashville. The Patriots the previous season had changed their logo from Pat Patriot to the "flying Elvis" logo. A sports talk radio program in Boston suggested that if the team was sold to the group from Nashville they wouldn't have to change their logo, they could just change their name to the Nashville Flying Elvises in honor of a famous resident of the state of Tennessee.

    The Bears originally were the Decatur Staleys and in their 1st season in Chicago they retained the name, changing it in their 2nd season to the Bears. The Packers very briefly had the name "Whales" (though they never played a single game with that name), and Curly Lambeau actually wanted to name the team the "Big Bay Blues" ( I am so glad we didn't take that name and changed our colors to the very recognizable Hunter Green and Harvest Gold!). But because the team was originally mainly workers for the Indian meat packing company that was bought out by Acme meat packing, and because Acme gained naming rights by buying the team uniforms, we became THE GREEN BAY PACKERS!

      we've always had names like that. As tygrkhat40 said, we also had the Monarchs. Lamar wanted a name that fit that scheme, but didn't want to give up the old west flavor, so went with the Chiefs. Also, he still owned the Texans name and gave it to the Houston franchise. So there are 2 minor inaccuracies from the video. I love that people go to Texans vs Titans games in Oilers gear. They're still just as salty about that move as Baltimore is about the Colts.

    • @JoeMCool
      @JoeMCool 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but it was quite coincidental... the baseball team was originally named the Perfectos (gawd but the folks in the 1800s had ZERO imagination!), and the Cardinals football team relocated from Chicago. Not quite sure where the football team's name came from, but the baseball team was nicknamed because of their socks, a nickname that just eventually stuck.

    In the early years of the NFL naming a city's professional football team with the same name as the city's baseball team was fairly common. The thinking being the relatively unknown sport of football could capitalize on the popularity of baseball.

    Dallas didn't want to confuse the football team with the minor league baseball team. In 1946, Buffalo had teams in the International League, American Hockey League, All-American Football Conference and the National Basketball League and all were called "Bisons." The NBL Bisons only lasted a few games in Buffalo when they were moved to the Tri-Cities and became the Blackhawks. In 1951, the team moved to Milwaukee and shortened the name to Hawks. The Hawks moved to St. Louis in 1955 and to Atlanta in 1968. In the years when the only teams in Buffalo were the IL and AHL squads, the hockey team was referred to as the Ice Bisons.

    A lot of people are pointing out the Cardinals being in St. Louis until the NFL team moved to Phoenix. There were also the Giants of New York. Hence, Chris Berman saying "the New York Football Giants" as they were called to keep the two separate before the MLB team moved to San Francisco. Apparently New York newspaper writers think people are too dumb to figure out that reading a baseball article was not about the football team. The press thought people are dumb? Some things never change.

    Saying the "5 boroughs of Manhattan" even though Manhattan is a borough, only listing 4 boroughs even though you literally just said 5, misspelling Staten Island and inexplicably adding an apostrophe to boroughs for no reason...
