Those bunk beds are hands down, the best idea for sleeping or storage areas! Never seen anyone do this kind of thing in a rig of any kind, and love that you can take them out and fold them up to slim and easy storage. Impressive!

Brilliant. I have a similar idea, but to hold an adult up there (tho would lower the mounting points a bit for fairer headroom split between lower and upper. But essentially cut a 4' x 6' piece of plywood in half to make 2 that are 4' x 3'. Now fasten each half on the outer walls where your notched 2x4 is by screwing 4' piano hinges into the plywood, and into the 2x4s near the top of them. This lets each half, when not in use, fold down along the outer walls out of the way, and can be fastened in place behind the lower cushions as backrests on each wall. Raising them towards the middle and up makes the two halves meet in the middle where slight overraising allows inserting your aluminum poles for support, or in my case I was thinking of angle steel in similar "V" notched slots holds them at the walls and you can lower each plywood half down onto them. The difference would be one continuous flat rigid surface ready for an air or foam mattress as opposed to your two "mini hammocks", and it should well support an adult. But for 2 small children, your design is genius!
If it's a flat double bed you need then that sounds great but just to mention that I have slept up there a few times and works fine. Obviously teh taller you are the lower down the wall they would need to be! Found no need for a mattress as it's hammock like. Although of course I will sleep on the main bed out of choice. :-)

I slept in a similar bed in the mid 90s in my ex in laws ford transit van. I was about 25 and surprisingly they were very comfortable. Your children will get years out of them.

and you still have the option of moving the holders down to the bed level facilitating the use of the bunk beds as an alternative to the beds if you need to move stuff that will require larger carrying capacity, guess you could incorporate the bunk bed holders into the beds as well.
wow. you just blew my mind! i've seen a few vans here on youtube with a sleeping quarters for the kiddos but either they seemed a bit unsafe or it would involve a lot of engineering and wouldn't be able to be put away like yours. i love your idea here! really impressive.

I’m guessing they aren’t just screwed into the cladding you’ve also screwed then in to wood batons behind or the metal? Sorry for all the questions.
Yes Marilyn I agree the girl have very clever parents, I have not seen bunks like that in any van or trailer before ... only one thing if you take the bunks down and roll em up I would make a sock or bag for them before storing to keep them clean.
We used to have bunk beds like this in our 1970s caravan. They went up lengthways at one end on the van, to make 2 bunks for 4 kids. Parents had dbl bed at other end.

Hey, just a quick one really - you don't happen to remember where you got your fabric from or what kind of fabric it is do you? I looked at deck chair fabric, but it's narrow! I went off where the structural rib is in the van and also wanted plenty of space to sit below. But like you say it might be more future proof to go a little lower. That said I have had a nap up there and providing the roof vent is open it doesn't feel too cramped, but may do for some.
I'm not sure if you are still checking comments on this video. If so, may I ask are these still working out well for you? Also, How many pounds do you suppose they would hold OK? I have 3 grandchildren ages 6-11 and my own 17 year old son and it's hard to find 5 places to sleep in my shuttle bus camper. I've been considering this style hammock for the younger ones. I've spent a few nights up there myself when the kids have fallen asleep on the main bed. Was easier than trying to move them and it's plenty strong enough. 👍

I went for the same point that there is a structural rib on the van. As it was only for the kids we wanted to make it so we could still sit below it if we left bunks up during the day.
Thanks, seems to have worked well. One of the easier parts of the build, the woodworking side of things is rather more bespoke! What I would do for a straight wall. All good fun though, hope you're well. :-)
Yes, well 80% better. I greased everything I could get to on the linkage and also left it in reverse gear while parked overnight for a while and now things seem to have improved. It may be the warmer weather that has helped too. Anyway I will be getting it looked at during it's service so that we can get it all back to normal, but for now I am happy to reverse into the driveway without fear of becoming stranded in the middle of the road! :-)
In my opinion you should use Mild Steel instead of aluminium. Mild steel has tensile strength which will allow it to bend if overloaded however aluminium will snap if the load goes beyond its limit. And the weight difference based on your application i believe will be negligible.

We're making ours with waterproof canvas for the exact reason lol

You could use Therm-a-rest self inflating air mattresses to give a bit more comfort to the bunk beds. Just a thought.

They can double as a medical cot if your out hiking somewhere and someone gets hurt. You can carry them back on those.

Alot of Renault and MAN Lorries have this type of bunk as a top bunk, so if it can hold a big fat trucker like me I'm sure your girls will be fine😂😂😂

No I think that is the size you mentioned. They did come at around 50mm too if you need stronger.

No idea scientifically but I would be confident using one, if you are using for adults often just use the 50mm poles I guess.

Tim and I have both slept in the bunks and they have held up well. Just make sure you double seem them and use a strong fabric
