I love how after you've watched 2 or 3 videos about Pitcairn Island, you start seeing the same people again, because there's only about 50 people on the island.

I stopped on Pitcairn while sailing around the world on a square rigger. They are wonderful and generous people whom I look forward to seeing again one day. I was video chatting with my buddy there just the other day. If you ever get the opportunity (most people don't), take it. Beautiful place. It's also fun to watch this and recognize everyone in this documentary. They treated my like family while I was there. Remarkable place.

I really hope that little girl has friends. At one point there was only one child on the island, and as much as I'm sure the adults (who have the choice to leave) enjoy their isolation, I can't think of a more desperately lonely experience than a kid growing up without anyone else their age to play with or talk to.

The ancient Polynesian people may seem primitive today, but they figured out extremely complex seagoing navigation and building of ships thousands of years before they were even known to Europeans, and I'm former Navy engineering. How they regularly travelled to Hawaii with nothing but knowledge and stars to guide them is beyond this sailor.
On long voyages their mariners would take turns lying with their body and face pressed against the bottom of the canoe, eyes closed, counting and feeling the direction of the conflicting swells and could "see" a landmass beyond the horizon by calculating the refractions. Absolutely mindblowing! In this day and age nobody has the attention span to perform such a feat of skill. Respect!

Many years ago, New Zealand cargo/passenger ships would call in at Pitcairn from the Panama Canal, delivering goods en route. I was on one such ship, and the islanders paddled out with their baskets and carvings for sale, flying fish being very popular. It was, in those days, not so remote. Now, with container ships and air travel being so common, the island is more cut off, and that trade is less. They still seem to cope with what they have and seem content.
What the fuck are you talking about? The Pitcairns Islands are west of Easter Island. No where NEAR the path of a ship going from Panama to New Zealand. Not too mention that theres not nearly enough people at any time to assist commercial sea-farers. Or the tiny tiny village even has the capacity to have fucking cargo ships who use the Panama Canal stop at their port. @@DvorTerrier Yes I did, it was red and white with a silhouetted sailing ship in red (VR6TC), unfortunately I lost it to a house fire. I had some valuable QSL's from back then including the Vatican, Father Dan on Ascension Island and Father Dave on Easter... The most valuable was the Vatican (HV1CN) because they almost never operated their radio station, very rare. I will never forget the short conversation. There was a giant pile-up on him because of the rarity and being a 5 from Texas I had to get over the east coast which was almost impossible, I had a steady 10 over 9 level when they called. It was on 15 meters, i was running a 6 element KLM @ 50 ' that worked like a water hose, it had 11db gain, I hit it with everything I had out of the amp, A home brew 4-1000/A in a big Bud cabinet with a 10 KVA transformer. When the calls stopped he would pick a person to speak to and he returned to me and said; " You are the only 5 I'm hearing your and 20db over 9 here at the Vatican old man, what are you using for a valve" (Tube). I was hitting that 11db antenna with almost 3000 watts DC which put the ERW into the thousands. Probably more than you wanted to know but All of this took place in the late 70's, I kept detailed logs which I lost in the fire also...

I have a recollection of contacting a descendant of F. Christian (probably Tom), but I never got the QSL card. It was in the 70s and I lived in Kazakhstan back then. I participated in a few contests and won the 2nd place in Kazakhstan in a WPX Contest, received an award and a pin from CQ Magazine, but somehow lost the award :( Decades lated, in the States, I looked up the results for that particular contest online and found the records! My call sign, the results and the place were all there! I called CQ Magazine and asked them if they could please send me a copy of my award -- I would totally cover ALL expenses,... but they said no. I almost started crying :))
Talking about the most memorable QSOs... In Kazakhstan, in my childhood years, I lived in a small village, next door to a boy who was also into ham radio. We were practicing Morse code, SWLing, soldering simple gear, etc. I made a one-transistor CW transmitter, went on top of a hill about 100 yards from the house, and my buddy was at home, listening to me... I transmitted "If you hear me, come out!" -- a second later Sergey ran out, an we started yelling and jumping and behaving like crazy monkeys pretty much! :)) You might be surprised, but to me, now that I think about it, THAT was the most wonderful and memorable QSO of my life.

I heard about this island in the news for the first time when I was younger. They literally DNA tested all the men on the island following an assault; "On 30 September 2004, seven men living on Pitcairn Island went on trial facing 55 charges relating to sexual offences. The accused represented a third of the island's male population and included Steve Christian, the mayor. But how is there any legal system there? What court jail or prison would they go to? In a community with 50 people wtf dont make any since they are so far off the grid it seems like you could get away with any crime? Where would they ship they guilty guy to? What country?

@@williamcarter1993 The real problem with finding justice there is that those guys were probably doing essential jobs on the island and with such a small population and so remote thousands of miles away from anywhere else, finding replacements to do their work while they're serving time is a nightmare.

In the Pitcairn sexual assault trial of 2004 seven men living on Pitcairn Island faced 55 charges relating to sexual offences against children.
The accused men represented a third of the island's male population.
All but one of the defendants were found guilty.
The remoteness of Pitcairn had shielded the tiny population (47) from outside scrutiny. The islanders had for many decades tolerated what the modern world classifies as sexual assault among the very young children.
Police officers in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom interviewed every women who had lived on Pitcairn.
Australian pastor Neville Tosen, who spent two years on Pitcairn, said that on his arrival, he had been taken aback by the conduct of the children. But he had not immediately realised what was happening. "I noticed worrying signs such as inexplicable mood swings," he said. "It took me three months to realise they were being abused." Tosen tried to bring the matter before the Island Council (the legislative body which doubles as the island's court), but was rebuffed. One Councillor told him :
"Look, the age of consent has always been ten and it doesn't hurt them."
A study of island records confirmed evidence that most girls bore their first child around the age of 12.
"I think the girls were conditioned to accept that it was a man's world and once they turned 10, they were eligible," Tosen said. Mothers and grandmothers were resigned to the situation, telling him that their own childhood experience had been the same; they regarded it as just a part of life on Pitcairn.
13 of the original settlers were murdered in fights over women.
Pitcairn's 47 inhabitants, almost all of whom are interrelated and inbred, were bitterly divided by the charges against what constituted most of the adult male population.
Many of the islanders boycotted the trial. "It's better for me not to know who's charged with what, so that I can still look them in the face as mates," one islander said.
"We still have to work together to keep this place going." While many islanders remain fearful that the outcome of the trial could sound the death-knell of the tiny state, others expressed optimism that it could mark a new beginning for Pitcairn.

The commentator-island guide was well suited for the role. He had that kind of personality people trusted, seems like a good guy. I think a more in-depth look at the infrastructure and how these people survive would be an interesting documentary.
I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure these people were a little weary of a film crew coming in and exploiting them making them look ignorant and backwards, but I got good vibes off the interviewer.

My friend went there decades ago and fixed their diesel generator and was given a wood fish. I asked him about the fish recently and he said he gave it away because he wanted to make sure it got passed onto someone that would appreciate its history.

I totally agree. I was watching this video on my TV and was having a difficult time listening to the little girl and moved to my computer in my office, thinking I had changed the settings somehow but even on the computer, it's frustrating to try to understand.
I watched mutiny on the bounty as a young girl and read a lot about it. I had a very romanticised view of life on such an island and dreamed of visiting. This video scrubbed that off the bucket list.

I took a pass by Pitcairn island in 97, the weather was to rough to go ashore, to leave my sailboat. The diving, and fishing was great. I restocked my supply of home canned food. If you've never tried home canned tuna, or lobster?! Try sailing your Ingrid 38' cutter Rigged named "Solitude" all around the Pacific Basin for ten years. Starting in Seattle, then Alaska, then the South Pacific to Australia and New Zealand. Sold my boat in Hawaii.

I remember when I first read the books of the Bounty Trilogy it was so fascinating. I also got to got aboard the replica Bounty when it was in Long Beach. My mom's boyfriend was a Chief Bosun retired and was part of the crew. I was saddened when that ship sunk a few years ago 2012 especially since the sinking was attributed to recklessness.
The quality gap between the turtle carvings and the living quarters is about as stark as can be.

Captain Bligh was one hell of a sailor...when he got voted off the Bounty he sailed that small craft over 4000 miles.
That was an amazing feat in itself. He was motivated by vengeance, it worked.
You have to be impressed at Bligh’s feat. But he had to do without vengeance. They couldn’t find the mutineers, and by the time they did, only one was still alive on Pitcairn. He was granted clemency.

They still look amazingly English . The young mother and daughter wouldn't look out of place in a Dorset countryside .
Not surprising really, though English DNA (i.e. germanic, Anglo Saxon) is less than 20% of the indigenous English population. It is called England as it was conquered by the English, rather than populated by them. England, especially further west, is mostly the original 'British' settlement from Iberia, going back to the end of the last ice age (ref Prof Bryan Sykes, Oxford Uni). The 'Pitkerns' do have Polynesian blood/DNA as well. But the speech is decidedly non Rhotic, so not from Dorset (i.e. Wessex), I suspect the sailors were from the eastern counties of England. The speech sounds a bit Norfolk/Suffolk to me.

Pitcairn Island fascinated me as a child, but at the time I knew only about the bounty and a little film footage of the island. As an adult I thought it’s a few families and private. Having seen this Mini Doc it’s really two worlds together 😊
After watching the movie about the bounty, I was quickly disturbed but fascinated on how those few mutineers survived. Legend has it that a mutineer, John Adams, had killed all the other male mutineers out of insanity and then kept reproducing to keep the population alive.

During the 19th century sailors from US and German Whaling boats anchored off the Island and left a few girls pregnant. Volcanic activity forced the complete evacuation of Pitcairn to Norfolk Island in 1856. The current population are descended for a small percentage who returned. Volcanic activity forced a second elevation to the UK in the 1950's. About half of these people never returned. Pitcairn is also still spoken on Norfolk

I've noticed more and more videos have loud narration and people's voices so low I'm unable to hear them. Is this a TH-cam problem?
Yes. People have discovered how to put a music track into their videos and want people to see their technical skills rather than the content. The louder the music and more intrusive the better. This video is a good example.
TV documentaries have the same problem especially in Ireland.

Recently visited. Such a beautiful island + so friendly the locals.
When I was in the Merchant Navy, back in the 60s, we anchored off Pitcairn. We were dropping off a missionary. Unfortunately we were not allowed ashore but the islanders came out in lifeboats. We were told , at the time, that Shaw Savill had donated a couple of these boats. True? Anyway the islanders brought out fruit and souvenirs. It was very interesting to talk to them.
Those rock markings are celestial, and play into the role of Maui and the sun. Polynesians were extremely skilled seafarers. It's incredible that today European sailors capture history even in this ocean. The Polynesians conquered every speck in the world's largest ocean. They knew what they were doing.

I have a flying fish carved by one of the Christian family (as in Fletcher Christian's descendants) that was brought to NZ by Leo Simpson (an NZ motorcycle racer) and given to my grandfather back in the 50's.

I found the background music drowning out the dialogue and conversation from the islanders, which is disappointing.
What I find fascinating about the picture at 9:11 is that a majority of the symbols that are carved/ drawn into the wall depicted in the drawing are also prevalent in many other societies today. Some of the earliest known writing that is still unreadable. I was watching another video about some ancient stones found in a cave in Illinois with a majority of these exact same symbols. Even the person with their hands in the air. I had to come back and pull this video up because it was the exact same symbols and I wanted to cross reference. Quite amazing...

@@peterk8909 my NZ 🇳🇿 history book says that more recent in depth research suggests that the migration began in Africa 🌍 (maybe North Africa?), travelled across Asia right to the Americas, then back round and across the Pacific via the islands, as far as New Zealand.
This makes sense given the amazing similarities in so many of the indigenous people groups in these nations.
I have travelled to numerous locations in the Pacific and Asia, and I have encountered many similar aspects of language and culture. 💖
One example is that the Japanese language has a number of similarities to our local Maori language.

The rock markings look a lot like a map of the stars, perhaps even a celestial event or maybe navigational directions to where the Polynesians came from or where they were going after visiting.
