      Yes, people can now be evacuated in an emergency to SA within 16 hours, which is incredible compared to over 3 weeks in some cases; so its saved a lot of lives. Its not open commercially yet (hence why I went back by sea....), so it hasnt really changed the island, but what a difference medical wise...

    Quite funny to come upon your documentary. I personally had a meet and greet episode with the islanders back in November 2003 when we were asked to bring a medical officer, his family and lots of supplies til the island. I was the chief officer on the Nysted Maersk (Maersk Line container boat) which was in route between AU, NZ, Panama Canal, Jamaica, US-east and west coasts. Our course was just south of Pitcairn and the islanders had observed us and made contact via VHF radio.
    Anyhow, enroute from NZ to Panama we had these people and supplies onboard we did a 2 hours stop just drifting off the landing area with our vessel (200 m in length) and were "boarded" by the islanders in the alu-longboats, so they could get there supplies and the four people we had on board. In return for our favor we´ve got lots of fresh fruits and fresh fish only few hours old.
    The funny part is that I recall lots of the faces in the documentary up against the pictures I got from that trip. Same but older and a few new ones.
    So Julian, thanks for sharing you film for us to enjoy.

    Really enjoyed the movie! I visited the island a few times in the early ‘60’s as a young Officer cadet on the ships of the New Zealand Shipping company. We didn’t get ashore but the islanders braved the rough seas to come out to us offshore. They boarded our ship and we traded basic necessities with them (washing powder, toothpaste etc) for carved artifacts ( flying fish, outrigger canoes etc). I still have a walking cane carved by Parkin Christian.
    The mutiny and the aftermath is a fascinating story, and the more you read into it, you realize that if there was one hero here it was Capt. Bligh and not fletcher christian......unless you prefer to believe Hollywood and the early books, like nordoff and hall et al.

    • @TheRevWillNotBeTelevised
      @TheRevWillNotBeTelevised 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Paedophiles on island = filmmaker should be punished? What the hell kind of logic is that? The film is about an adventure to an island based on the makers interest in the mutiny on the Bounty, not a hard hitting news piece about paedophilia.

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can't make a film about Pitcairn without glorifying paedophilia, it has been absolutely rife there. And all the people are inbred. The Bounty is but a distant memory. Acknowledge the shame that is the present!

    It's great that it elicits so many different emotions and responses from people. There were many ways it could have been edited. I had to remove most of the anger and crying. We were very upset a lot of the time but I thought it made for more fun to keep it light-hearted. It was very difficult to do considering I did it mostly on my own.

    There is now transportation to Pitcairn Island. You fly to Tahiti, fly to Mangareva, ferry to Rikitea Village, and there you board a ship for a 30hr trip to Pitcairn. That's what I plan to go on eventually.
    I actually lived on the island when I was very little and I recognize many of the faces. Despite the issues that have happened on the island (especially in more recent years), the islanders are really warm and hospitable people and would treat you like family. That..was..insanely good! No wonder you won awards! Your editing is tremendous, and how did you get some of those shots with little standard hand held cameras? The shots of Felix (a bloody rock star!) climbing the boat in swells were terrifying. It's clear you must have footage of so much more fear and drama, you were all so genuinely frightened and emotional. So glad you all survived. My personal obsession has been more Easter Island than Pitcairn (I did a series of paintings and drawings of the Moai in my Art class days) but they share the same survival in the face of overwhelming remoteness. Thank you for all the work that obviously went into this, you deserve every award!

    Truly a beautiful job! I don't think I have ever enjoyed anything on the internet near as much as I did this! Always fascinated by the descendant's, I ordered online a wooden bowl from one of the Christian clan. It took a year to get it and was wrapped in newspaper from Pitcairn. Didn't know they needed a newspaper, just yell out the window. Thanks for the wonderful post!

    Hi Joolz. Did you know that on Norfolk Island (an Australian island close to where I live) on 8 June 1856, the descendants of the HMS Bounty mutineers, including those of Fletcher Christian, were resettled from the Pitcairn Islands, which had become too small for their growing population. You could try visiting there as well. We fly there daily. Love your videos.

    I sailed my 38’ Ingrid cutter “Solitude” by Pitcairn Island in 1993, it was too rough to land, so we sailed around to the lee of the Island. Where it was relatively a calm sea. We caught and home canned, a large (100lbs) Yellow Fin tuna and some Ono (Wahoo). We filled up our empty jars from the Albacore Tuna we had caught off the coast of Oregon on our way south. A week passed with no improvement in the weather. So we sailed on to New Zealand.

    • @Joolzguides
      @Joolzguides  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they seemed fine to me but some people speak badly of them due to the island's past. For me it wasn't just a box ticking though. I needed to try and do something with my life and I got to the point of thinking if I turned back I would be just going back to selling kites for the rest of my life. As it is the film has done well and I'm glad I went. I totally didn't blame Maurice though. He made a perfectly reasonable decision!

You know what, I didn’t even know the story of mutiny on the bounty so from a historical perspective it was interesting but it also became a documentary drama with the injection of jeopardy. Compelling stuff. Also some lovely contributions from your sister with the sea shanty. The animation indents were great too. 👍

    Thanks for this documentary. Back in the late 80's I also dreamed of traveling to Pitcairn one day, looking up the place on maps and reading the stories. Since then, what I have learned about the place and those living there has diminished that wish, and your report further contributes to the disillusionment (even googling the name of your host is depressing). I don't really need to go there anymore, I guess.
