A considerably newer example but I personally love the 2015 Krampus movie. It's inmensely campy and goofy but it also has some genuinely rad monster designs and taps into what I feel is the criminally underused setting of Christmas horror. Perhaps a bit too high budget to count as schlock though but eh.
One of my favorite things Henenlotter did was worldbuilding and you really get that from Basket Case, to Brain Damage and Frankenhooker. The scene where Duane and Belial are riding the train is mirrored in Brain Damage, from the perspective of Brian and the Alymer, so that world persists across his films. It's historical documentation of a New York and New Jersey that just doesn't exist anymore.
I remember watching Basket Case with my mom, dad and little brother when I was a child. I remember never knowing the name of it but I always remembered Belial and always thought he was the coolest monster I've ever seen. Found it once I turned 18 and always always aaaalways felt it was an underappreciated film. The acting was definitely not up to par but the story and just the art of horror at the time was unique. 10/10
I think in its OWN way the acting is great for what it is too. Obviously it’s totally ridiculous and over the top, but for the concept and the world this movie takes place in, could you really imagine the acting being any other way?
Great video, but not really fair saying there's no originality or room for shlock when The Substance and Terrifier 3 are literally in theaters right now alongside Joker/Transformers/etc. and doing fantastic. If you love these, you'd probably LOVE The Substance.
Terror Vision has a very special place in my heart ❤ * it’s one of my moms favorites. She got a dvd copy of it from an internet friend she met on Cybertown -another topic you’ve featured in a video before:) My mom passed a few years ago so I take any opportunity to share this lol don’t mind me :p ❤❤
It's a simple formula really. i try to tell people this. as long as the director cares and takes it seriously. it doesn't matter how poorly it's made. The viewer will give it a chance and try to suspend there just belief.
Ah man I mentioned something like this to someone in a conversation about crappy games. Someone said “well everybody likes to talk about how The Room is such a so bad it’s good movie so why don’t you guys like this bad game?” Can’t remember exactly what game but it’s safe to say it was just objectively bad. I replied with “There’s a difference between so bad it’s good and outright bad. The room is so bad it’s good because while it’s a horrible movie Tommy Wiseau has so much passion and desire to make good movies that that enthusiasm rubs off on the movie. Other movies are just bad and there’s no enthusiasm or drive to make something good and that’s why they’re miserable films.”
This was such a good video! The walk through different classics and modern films was such a good retrospective, and the discussion of the films and their draw was great!!! The editing was super smooth and cool, too :3
I went into Malignant without watching any trailer just thought it was some random paranormal movie, and it by far caught me off guard. It’s now one of my favorite horror movies of the modern era.
It really shocked me too, I heard that it was “different” than normal James Wan movies, but I didn’t know much about it either. Safe to say I was VERY surprised
I had a bum alcoholic dad. I can’t think of one time he did anything with me. But he loved low budget horror movies. At one point, I started watching one he had on. I was maybe 8 or 9. I liked them too. So that was the only thing we ever did together. He used to ask me if I want to watch _____ with him tonight. We both had our favorite low budget movie of all time, and it was Night of the Demons. We loved all 3, even the remake. I don’t like demon and vampire movies, but this movie just hit every single note for me. I feel like they are the PERFECT b movies. Now, as a 31 year old, they’re the only movies I will watch. I also like music without professional mixing or equipment or money. The flaws are what make it. Give me something with flaws and limitations over something that is too perfect every time. Flawed/limited art just has soul. Oh for non-horror schlock, my favorite is The Stöned Age. It just has so much charm and a weird dreamy vibe. There is nothing else like it, that I’ve found.
I love, and have seen, every movie in this episode. A couple other favorites of mine are The Unnameable/Unnameable II, Phantasm/Phantasam II, Night of the Comet, Return of the Living Dead, Bubba Ho-Tep, Chopping Mall, Deadly Friend, Dethgasm, Evil Dead/Evil Dead II, Dr. Giggles, Waxwork, and April Fool's Day. I could go on and on. Big fan of horror, and a big fan of 80's horror in particular. I have to say, big thumbs up to Debunk File here, I have enjoyed everything you guys have put out, but this one may have be a personal favorite
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one to the extent that you did. As I said in some other comments, this was a deeply personal passion project that I’ve literally always wanted to figure out a way to create in one way or another, so I’m so happy its being appreciated. :) Return of the Living Dead will forever be my favorite zombie movie. I was trying so hard to fit it into the video somehow (along with many other things) but oh well. Regardless of it all, I’m just glad you enjoyed and I hope it gave you some Halloween spirit!
Schlock is something I love, one year I watched every 70s-90s horror film which started with The (The Stuff, The Gate etc.) So whenever I see a horror film starting with the I have to see it, Recently I watched The Substance and gosh, that was pure schlock.
Seeing you talk about terror vision was great. I’ve only ever seen it once and it was from a TH-cam rip of it back in like 2011. I was in 2nd grade. The movie is a fever dream and I love it.
Great episode, y'all. It really hasn't felt like Halloween, this year, and this dive through some of my favorite films made me feel way more in the spirit. Happy Halloween!
Recent favorites that are schlocky for me are Psycho Goreman and The Substance. I loved that you mentioned Malignant too, the opening scene really set the tone of what we were getting into with that one. It's great. Loved this video
I’m so glad you liked this video!! I FINALLY got to watch The Substance just the other day. I enjoyed it a lot.. but not quite as much as I hoped. Maybe I just have to rewatch it.
@KimberBennis Thematically I absolutely LOVED it, and I think the movie has one of the most creative concepts I can possibly think of! The themes of aging and the way Hollywood treats celebrities and women as disposable when they age is absolutely heartbreaking, yet so real.. But in an ironic twist of fate, I actually didn’t really like the satirical angle of the movie that much. It’s usually something that’s totally up my alley, but oddly it didn’t work for me. The way they wrote every character was so over the top and ridiculous that it actually took me out of the message it was trying to convey, which i personally thought would’ve worked better with a more realistic angle. BUT that’s just me off of first watch, I’m definitely going to give it a rewatch soon.
Ahhhh, what a badass scene to watch Koba jumping through fire on horseback wielding two machine guns. So many of these movies I want to watch again now. Thanks for sharing your love of these movies. This was so fun to watch.
this was such a fun and entertaining video! i can tell you guys really put a lot of thought into it. im gonna jot down some of your recommendations. if you put this much effort into these videos, im down to watch a million more of them!
Oh man, The Stuff...My parents watched that movie at home when I was like 6, maybe 7. It scared the shit out of me because I just didn't understand what was going on.
11:10 omg, Basket Case reminded me of a movie I saw in my teens! It's right up your alley. It's called Acción Mutante (1993). If you can, give it a watch. It's like a mixture of Basket Case and Rocky Horror 😂
I like hearing about things people love. I don't quite have the stomach for films like this - not enough to sit down and properly watch them at least - but it's great to hear and learn about them. :D
Re-Animator and Bride Of Re0Animator are hands down my favorite schlocky films but I also love Evil Dead, as well as the first two follow ups because they leaned into the camp so heavily. And while Rocky Horror Picture Show is not traditional schlocky horror, it references and pays homage to classic horror/monster films.
Yknow, I had so many ideas for this video that I couldn’t include them all, but one of the ideas I had was a small section of MAINSTREAM examples of schlock breaking through, and my top example for that was Evil Dead 2. My reason for not including that section was due to all those films having much larger budgets, even if the spirit was still there, but yeah I particularly love Evil Dead 2 so much
Fun Fact: Ridley Scott's hands literally moved the eggsac in the first Alien just because he wanted practical effects that looked real. Also, I always loved your intro with Jason Goes To New York's scene where he smacks the boombax so hard it breaks. Love it.
South Korea is producing Academy Award nominated schlock and you forgot to mention that "Brain Dead? is known in North America as "Dead Alive" in a very edited form!
46:09 A scene from Amelie (Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain) ! Ab-so-lutely love that movie. Just to see the world from her perspective is just heartwarming
When I think of movies like this, I think about Mom and Dad Save the Universe. The mushroom monster in that is both the cutest and worst thing I can think of seeing in a movie like these. I haven't seen it in years, tho.
Not fair! I was totally eating cream cheese with gingerbread when you started the segment on "the Stuff" and i got progressively more horrified as you were explaining the white food takes over your brain 🧠 😅 i feel violated
there is nothing new under the sun, our short-sighted limitations of the human mind is a wonder unto itself. good video, bro I like this way more than the 4chan deep dives even though those were all good too.
Great Halloween special! BTW, did you make a video about the middle earth games nemesis system? I swear you did, and it was about how someone discovered a kinda funny/kinda creepy bug in the game, where an enemy kept attacking the player, even after he deleted the save. Kinda creepy I swear you had a video on this.
@DebunkFile Thank you so much! I thought it was in another video. I tried to show my brother it a few nights ago, because he does computer programming, and is interested in AI, but I couldn't find it. So glad you responded. Have a good night.
A perfect example of the ‘originality is dead in Hollywood’ argument is Dune 2. While it may have been a crowd-pleaser, it was filled with unnecessary changes from its source material. In the film, Fremen aren’t a close-knit group bound together by an ideology and the harsh climate of Arrakis. They’re split into the hyper-religious, fanatical Fremen and the woke, progressive young Fremen who know all about the Bene Gesserit’s top-secret plan to seed religions on planets to potentially help any sisters who may be stranded there in the future. There's much more I have to say about this film, but this is what I consider a fundamental problem with the world of Dune 2.
Nice synopsis of schlock. I really liked the original Puppetmaster trilogy as well. A lot of these movies takes me back to y high-school days in the 80s👍
Omg, the memories!!! These were so classic. Special effects were laughable, and the stories were great, making these so much fun to watch.😊😊 My Grandma got me started on horror movies as she loved them. (yes i said Gran Gran). She use to tell my Mom she was taking me to some Disney, or other kids movie, but we would go see horror movies.😂😂. *sigh* i did have the greatest Grandma. Those were the days. My fave schlock movie has to be either Squirm, or Motel Hell. So much fun.
You want "so bad it's good"? Check out the Evil Bong movie series. However, because there are at least 10 of them, it's more like so bad it's good, then bad, then why are they continuing this, all the way to basically devolving into a softcore adult film. Billed as a horror comedy, it's more of an experience that probably would be much better if you were on a particular herbal plant.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one. I’ve wanted to make something like this in one way or another for such a long time. I’m so glad I finally figured out a way to do it
I watched a short film on TH-cam and it was about this person having an “original idea” and whenever he told someone, their head would explode lol. Until one day he meets someone, and they beg him to tell them. He does, their head doesn’t explode. But he can’t handle living with knowing about this original idea so they kill them selves😆 so moral was, humans can no longer create original ideas
@ it’s called short horror film O.I. | alter (I guess alters the Channel name. ) I randomly stumbled upon it and it was a pretty entertaining watch so id recommend it 🤙 definitely not as campy and fun as all these great movies but its short n sweet
I'm a little disappointed that you didn't mention John Landis' 1971 film "Schlock" which was plugged by Johnny Carson, and that led to its 1973 release.
@@DebunkFile woah bro - woahhhh waittt a minute here - now why the *hell* is your thumbnail for this video being *Art the Clown* ?? 😒 I mean… 😒👀 *CLICKBAIT* 👀😒 You’re *click-baiting* your audience… and if that’s not *sad* enough … you’re doing it on *Halloween Night* …? 😒🙂↔️😒 Not a good look on sooo many levels… Not sure if yall are even aware of this POV 👆and I hate to be the one pointing it out to you guys but that’s the world we’re living in right now 🙂↔️🤷🏻♀️
@DebunkFile i thought you were going to mention it given you made it slightly appear. Still, loved this video a lot, maybe would you do a second part? Talk about unconventional horror? Put som' Michael Haneke on the mix?
I don’t have any current plans to do a follow up, but I’d definitely love to make something like this again that’s for sure. This was one of my favorites I’ve ever made, so I’m glad you enjoyed it :)
@@DebunkFile yeah dude! Just came from the other video about the TH-cam kid and I found that content to be a lot more...passionate? Great finds to be honest, that love you have for this type of stuff shows so keep at it. 👍
@DebunkFile Oh wow that's a surprise! a ton of the things you covered were things they have too (some quite recently, you'll recognize some thumbnails for sur). I enjoy all their stuff but for this kinda thing their show Best of The Worst is obviously what youd wanna check out. The last movie they covered in their most recent Haloween special had me laughing harder than I have in a very long time. They even admitted it was one of the best (worst) movies they have ever found even after doing this for over a decade. Enjoy :)
When I was still just a kid my dad would go to HollyWood Video every week, and before that Blockbuster. He would always let me rent literally whatever I want. At first it was stuff like anime, Fatal Fury, gory kind of stuff. We would watch schlocky ass movies because that's what he wanted to do. One of my earliest memories is a schlock film, some lady was going to give birth to a demon or something. My best memories is watching "shitty" movies with my dad, or playing SNES RPGs with my mom.
Hey Debunk, I was wondering if you checked out the movie "I Saw the TV Glow?" It's not "schlocky" but it felt so original. It is easily my favorite movie of 2024.
@DebunkFile glad I wasn't the only one. I watched it with a couple friends and they enjoyed it but not as much as myself. I watched it with my other friend and it was so profound for both of us
The reason so many of these bad remakes are successful is simply numbers. If almost every movie is a remake, then by the law of averages a few are gonna be successful. It doesn’t mean they’re good, or that people secretly really like them, it just means there’s so many more of them. Also, basically every movie you mention as being good as an existing up, still has a marked difference from modern spammed out sequels. The Thing, a one off, non-serialized remake, by a respected director, of a movie that came out decades before is very different than 5 marvel movies a year. Almost all the “good” examples you give are at least 30 years old and fit the orevious “The Thing” example I gave than serialized nonssnse.
The Girl with the dragon tattoo was a remake. Psycho has been remade, the original ideas for starwars are just Samurais in Space, with heavy influence from Akira Kurasawa
While there is still good stuff released It isn't a good sign that the entertainment and art that has a higher budget seems to almost correlate with poor quality.
Can’t include everything man, as much as I wanted to. I through that movie in there as a nod because I really wanted to talk about it, but it was so difficult. There was like 50 movies I wanted to spotlight
all the paul naschy films.... he was kind of proto-tarantino in some ways a good bit of the 50s/60s horror and sci fi films anything w/ linnea quigley night of the comet too many to list good work \m/
Bad Taste is the best film ever made. Fight me. The scene when they explode the goat was done with real dynamite underneath a coffee table with a goatskin rug on it.
Thank you guys for giving me this opportunity to work with yall! It was a really fun experience and hope everyone enjoyed the songs! Thanks again 🫶
Great job. I enjoyed this so much. Thanks for sharing your passion with us. ❤
A considerably newer example but I personally love the 2015 Krampus movie. It's inmensely campy and goofy but it also has some genuinely rad monster designs and taps into what I feel is the criminally underused setting of Christmas horror. We definitely need more Christmas horror movies. The new Nosferatu is gonna be the best 🙏

YES! That part shocked me the first time I saw Brain Damage haha
Hennenlotter and Larry Cohen were masters of NYC guerilla filmmaking.
"They Live" with Roddy Pipper is one of my favorites. Had the longest fight scene ive ever seen. 😂

Not fair! I was totally eating cream cheese with gingerbread when you started the segment on "the Stuff" and i got progressively more horrified as you were explaining the white food takes over your brain 🧠 😅 i feel violated
Schlock is something me and my husband bonded over
there is nothing new under the sun, our short-sighted limitations of the human mind is a wonder unto itself. good video, bro I like this way more than the 4chan deep dives even though those were all good too.
this was so enjoyable, thank you!💙
I’m really glad you enjoyed it!
Great Halloween special! BTW, did you make a video about the middle earth games nemesis system? I swear you did, and it was about how someone discovered a kinda funny/kinda creepy bug in the game, where an enemy kept attacking the player, even after he deleted the save. Kinda creepy
I swear you had a video on this.
So glad you enjoyed! And yes we did, it was our 4chan Deep Dive Vol 10

Critters, Ghoulies, Munchies... to name a couple.
The Stuff's commercials are 80s heaven :D
Truly
Awesome video! Broadened my perspective :)
I’m really glad you liked it‼️
21:00 hey! that's uncle rico/the warewolf guy from Monster Squad & Fright Night!
I just..wait......wait. Uncle Rico and Wolfman.... 🤯🤯🤯
I’m such a big Fright Night fan and somehow I didn’t notice that 😭
16:21 the text writing and sounds are from professor layton right??
the WASP cameo on terrorvision lol
Every Single film highlighted here are in my top twenty films.
Love to see it‼️
Basket case literally omg gaveme nightmares as a kids holy crap
Haha I can only imagine
Omg, the memories!!!
These were so classic. Special effects were laughable, and the stories were great, making these so much fun to watch.😊😊
My Grandma got me started on horror movies as she loved them.
I was confused because I always knew "Brain Dead" as "Dead Alive"
Oh yeah I should’ve specified that, that’s completely my bad. In the states its censored version was called Dead Alive.
Puppetmaster may be a good series, but it ain't got nothing on King Bong!
What an incredible video man, thank you.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one. I’ve wanted to make something like this in one way or another for such a long time. I’m so glad I finally figured out a way to do it
definitely here for the schlock!
God I fucking loved The Stuff, I watched it with some of my closest friends. The special effects were disturbing as hell no matter how simple it was
It’s such a unique movie
I watched a short film on TH-cam and it was about this person having an “original idea” and whenever he told someone, their head would explode lol. Until one day he meets someone, and they beg him to tell them. He does, their head doesn’t explode. But he can’t handle living with knowing about this original idea so they kill them selves😆 so moral was, humans can no longer create original ideas
Woah, that sounds wild
@ it’s called short horror film O.I. | alter (I guess alters the Channel name. ) I randomly stumbled upon it and it was a pretty entertaining watch so id recommend it 🤙 definitely not as campy and fun as all these great movies but its short n sweet
Lawnmowers are the best zombie killer
I loved watching the puppet master when I was a child. I’ve only never seen anything like it agin
I'm a little disappointed that you didn't mention John Landis' 1971 film "Schlock" which was plugged by Johnny Carson, and that led to its 1973 release.
omg was david firths' "cream" heavily inspired by "the stuff"????
Yayyy thanks so much dudes for a Halloween drop. We notice these things bros 🖤🩶🤍
We always gotta have you covered for this day 🎃 I hope you enjoy this one, I’ve always wanted to make it!
@@DebunkFile
woah bro - woahhhh waittt a minute here - now why the *hell* is your thumbnail for this video being *Art the Clown* ?? 😒
I mean…
😒👀 *CLICKBAIT* 👀😒
You’re *click-baiting* your audience… and if that’s not *sad* enough … you’re doing it on *Halloween Night* …?
😒🙂↔️😒
Not a good look on sooo many levels…
Not sure if yall are even aware of this POV 👆and I hate to be the one pointing it out to you guys but that’s the world we’re living in right now 🙂↔️🤷🏻♀️
The thumbnail is art the clown because he is our main example of the art of schlock living on in the modern day, as was stated in the video.
@DebunkFile
omg how dare you call ART shlock … ?
🧐
It’s a compliment ‼️
I'm torn.
I want to watch the video, but I do not want that thumbnail in my watch history list.
Skipping meet the feebles was criminal.
Couldn’t talk about everything I’m sorry! That movie is absolute madness though
I’m so glad to hear that! I hope to make many more passion projects like this! Be on the lookout for one in just a few days…
Happy Halloween
Happy Halloween!
Responding to every comment i see! Thank you for these amazing binge-able videos and happy halloween! 🎃
I’m tryin!
I’m glad you enjoy these videos, and I truly hope you enjoy this one too. Happy Halloween!! 🙏
Happy Halloween debunk 🎃 👻
Happy Halloween! 🎃
Debunk File 100% a RedLetterMedia fan XD
Believe it or not, not really 😭 I’ve seen some of their stuff of course but I’m not too avid of a watcher. Definitely gotta change that
@DebunkFile Oh wow that's a surprise! a ton of the things you covered were things they have too (some quite recently, you'll recognize some thumbnails for sur). Enjoy :)
Are these any non-horror schlock movies? I could imagine an unhinged comedy being schlock. Or an extremely melodramatic romance.
Definitely John Waters movies
I absolutely LOVED it so much. One of the biggest highlights of the year for me movie wise
@DebunkFile glad I wasn't the only one. I watched it with a couple friends and they enjoyed it but not as much as myself. I watched it with my other friend and it was so profound for both of us
@DebunkFile wouldn't mind getting a video from you on it lol
The Rocky Horror Picture Show had an existing IP?
It was a musical before it was a movie
Excellent video.
Thank you so much! I’m very glad you enjoyed :)
I saw Brandon Tenold's reviews on some of these.
I’ve seen his channel around but have never watched. Glad he got you to see some of these!
While there is still good stuff released
It isn't a good sign that the entertainment and art that has a higher budget seems to almost correlate with poor quality.
Speaking of schlock, how come after 169 videos your vid quality is so poor? I mean, I still watch them, just wondering.
Bruh how do you just skip over Troma but include Toxie in the intro?
Can’t include everything man, as much as I wanted to. I through that movie in there as a nod because I really wanted to talk about it, but it was so difficult. There was like 50 movies I wanted to spotlight
nice.. sort of ironic Basket Case got 2 sequels tho right?
Definitely haha
I absolutely adore Malignant
It was such an entertaining watch!
One of the schlockiest movies I've seen was Tokyo Gore Police. It was so over the top, goddamn...
also, the Maniac cop series, Dagon, Dark City, all great movies.
That is one that I have never watched!
all the paul naschy films....
he was kind of proto-tarantino in some ways
a good bit of the 50s/60s horror and sci fi films
anything w/ linnea quigley
night of the comet
too many to list
good work \m/
Bad Taste is the best film ever made. Fight me. The scene when they explode the goat was done with real dynamite underneath a coffee table with a goatskin rug on it.
A magnum opus type video fr
That means everything to me. I personally think this really may be the best I’ve ever made so I’m so glad to see somebody else say the same 💛
Debunk file is the man
🦾🦾
Any day we get a debunkfile video is great, but on Halloween!?!?!? Praise Jah y’all
Happy Halloween! I hope you enjoy this one 🎃
