It's not really fair to say the Monado is important to the plot of Xenoblade. More so to say that the Monado _is_ the plot of Xenoblade, to the point that the game is literally named after it (both the final name and the original: Monado: Beginning of the World).
Much like the Master Sword, the Monado is itself alive and sentient. Not sure if the same is true for the Daedric sword, but I don't think the energy sword is.
