Every moment of this song, and of this album is indelibly etched in every part of my being, body, mind and soul. Every crash, every orchestral hit, every reverse sweep, every moment of the arrangement, every bass note, everything that Van sang is perfect. I play it regularly. Perfect arrangement, and performance.
The arrangements of VM’s music are without peer . In this rendition, the holding notes of the trumpet and sax link the entire melody and mood in perfect harmony with the lyrics . Just superb.
It's an acoustic bass (of unknown origin but, I suspect commissioned by David Hayes) and amplified to great effect.... Hayes is, without doubt, along with John Allair, one of Morrison's trusted sidemen.
Lyrics From the ancient sun to the old heart stove come the troubadours From the city gates to the castle walls it's the troubadours On a sunlit day it was bright and clear And the people came from far and they came from near To hear the troubadours Well the troubadours sang their songs of love to the lady fair She was sitting outside on a balcony in in the cool night air It was a starry night the moon was shining bright And the trumpets rang and they gave a chime For the troubadours And for everyman all across the land and from shore to shore They came singin' songs of love and chivalry from the days of yore Baby lift your window high do you hear that sound It's the troubadours as they go through town Baby lift your window high do you hear that sound It's the troubadours with their freedom song Lift your window high turn your lamp down low baby I love you so Do you hear that sound Do you hear that sound It's the troubadours going through town
In the age of the internet it has become common to fish for clicks and likes with videos and articles like "who is the greatest singer of all time" or "Listen to the BEST PERFORMANCE EVER" and so on. While debating who is the "greatest" is frankly a waste of time, I think very few rival (early) Van Morrison's ability to bring a great band together, to push the musicians to their limits and beyond, and to be in turn lifted up and deliver a badass vocal performance. This show and others from this period (Too Late To Stop Now, his appearance on The Last Waltz, his guest appearance with Chet Baker at Ronnie Scott's) are so inspiring, full of raw energy and rightfully some of the most acclaimed and appreciated live performances in the history of pop music.
"Lift your window high, turn your lamp down low, don't you know, how I love you so. LISTEN !!! " Van is a great lyricist, as well as a great performer, and Pee Wee is a great performer and arranger.
in SF '80, visiting an art school friend, walking back from dinner. you could hear the noise from on down the street, and the music was playin', make ya' move your feet 👣 (off into writing a song),anyway small club (100people), downtown, Van did like 3 encores and they threw open all the doors and let it sing! free! great as i had small money, anyway, we walked right in and watched Van the Man perform two encores in the atmosphere that he loves best i presume- small clubs like when he began as a lad.
Van not only knows talent but knows how to utilize everyone to their fullest potential. He’s been been one of my all time favorites through the ages and now, knowing what I’ve learned about the music business and media, I have an even greater respect for him to never sell his soul to these self serving monsters.
I’m sure you are very happy to own the 2 DVD sets. I’m happy for you. I plan on purchasing the same this week.. Van Morrison is an artist of the First Degree. Love and admiration to VM. A forever fan of Van the Man! ❤️
I could never disagree with the words of Mathew Elliontt when he said the following about my Celtic 1st cousin Van, Such beauty in real musical talent. No high tech bullshit needed. The greatness of Van and these amazing musicians

RIP Pee Wee Ellis
Van is a great jazz musician--he gives the musicians around him plenty of space. Van knows when to keep quiet, just like Miles Davis.

My goodness. What is that bass guitar? The whole band and the man were one. A man's soul can only sail into the mystic.
Fantastic comment. It deserves billions of thumbs up, man.

All this concert its pure amazing magic and the band to...but this song man...thanks god i found van music...
Piccolo Trumpet and Peewee sax doesn't get any better than this... and as always VTM rules!!
....and for all those unaware of the piccolo trumpet just think of McCartney's "Penny Lane" and David Bedford's solos....
I had no clue who they where the first time I heard this but I knew they where special
It is Mark Isham on the trumpet.

True. It is a great array of talent.
Having seen him in concert many times, I am of the opinion that he quite likes when the attention isn't on him.
