Canyoning in Italy - Val Pilotera, Gordona, Lago di Como, Lombardia

The Val Pilotera is right beside the very famous and attractive Bodengo canyon. The pools of the Val Pilotera are deep and the water has a beautiful green color, however there is a lot of boulder-climbing to do on your way through the canyon. If you don't mind this though, this canyon (especially the last third) is quite rewarding. The metamorphic rock (metagranite) is the same rock that is found in the famous neighboring canyoning mecca of Ticino. With plenty of mica in the rock, they show a nice shiny effect (can be tough for the camera), however this rock type is quite harsh on your rope if you are not careful around sharp edges. The Val Pilotera is quite an open canyon, though there are some short sections which are a bit narrower.
Parking: 46°16'41.7"N 9°20'52.1"E. Make sure to get a toll ticket beforehand, for example at the bar in Gordona: www.bargordona....
Ascent: There are two possibles routes up, one on the west side, and one on the east side. We did the western one: from the parking lot follow the road across the bridge until you see another parking lot from which a path goes up to Pra l'Oste. Keep following this path up until you find Pra l'Oste as seen in the beginning of the video. Follow the path down on the other side until you arrive at the bridge across the Val Pilotera. From here, rappel down from a tree or find a way to downclimb. 1.5 - 2 hours
Descent: Nice rappels and jumps with a lot of walking and climbing across the rock fields in between. Depending on how fast you can (and want to) do this, the canyon takes between 3 and 5 hours.
The way back: where the Val Pilotera meets the Bodengo, a path through the forest on the left side will take you back up to the parking lot (20 min).
Max abseil: 25m
