because its overall a tragic tale of an obessed personality. dexter never wanted a normal life, even when he had a shade of it like in new blood he went back to killing. him and the dark passenger are the same people, ocasionally changing whos at the wheel. lets just ignore the weak writing of the later seasons and honestly that of new blood as well, dexters story was NEVER gon be a happy ending because dexter would want his own "ending" (him just killing over and over again like he wanted to at the end of new blood by escaping with brian). ironically what he really wanted we get to see on his face at his final moments - sweet release from this lifelong cat and mouse chase between himself. he was actually so selfish, but it was a moment of redemption for him before his death when he actually is forced to look back at his trail of destruction (like he made his victims do) and finally accepts his end.
