    had Joe in my powerlifting club when he came in in italy for a meet, he said he had to do a "light" bench session, he proceded to do 270kgs for 2 dubles on a high board, the speed was insane.
    Very nice and friendly guy too.

    Awesome video! As an aspiring thrower myself, I love seeing this stuff.
    Regarding the bench press, for shot and discus throwers its employed heavily. At the Olympic/world level, most throwers will be at or near 200kg in that, with shot putters generally a bit stronger.
    Regarding squats, it seems like a lot of throwers don't necessarily work up to 1RMs on them but hit heavy rep maxes instead, as demonstrated by Joe Kovacs here. Simon Pettersson, Olympic silver in the discus, said his best squat was 10x200kg, and I once had the chance to train with a Commonwealth Games discus thrower, who also said that his best squat was 5x250kg, i.e not referencing a 1RM but something else.
    Regarding other athletes you could cover, sorry to throw (pun intended) another thrower into the mix but they're just really into lifting big weights. Gerd Kanter has the 3rd best discus throw of all time, world and Olympic champion, and he's got some good material:

    Have a look at Werner Günthör lads, plenty of training vids of this huge 135kg powerhouse jumping around like he weighs 50kg, can't remember if there's any big lifts on video but he has hit some insane numbers like 250kg power clean and 240kg BTN push press apparently.
    If I had to choose for you two, Eoin would be Hammer/Shot and Daire would be Disc/Hammer :)

    As far as old stories go with throwers strength the numero uno is Udo Beyer. It was claimed Udo could squat 900lbs and press 600lbs behind the neck. While there's no video of his lifts or what exactly that press or squat looked like there was no doubt in this strength. He didn't have very good technique as a glide shot putter compared to his competitors and fellow country men but he was so strong he set the world record twice and was unbeatable for years.
    The East German's were insanely impressive with their strength and dbol use and their system was incredible back in the day.

    • @wayneegli8379
      @wayneegli8379 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe isn't very tall (officially 1.81m (5-11¼)), so he will always look heavier. But, to your point, Joe was 315 (143kg) at Olympic weigh-ins, so, I would agree on 150kg (330), not on 155kg (340).

    someone tell me please: why do track athletes [and other non-strength specific sports] do behind the neck jerks rather than traditional? is it the relative technicality compared to the other?

    • @aimelo419
      @aimelo419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would argue that a behind the neck jerk is more lower body dominant, it’s easier to transfer the power from your legs into the push.

    Over 21 meters: you're REALLY playing with the big boys

    Little side note:
    Anatoly Bondarchuck, gold medalist, coach of the Hammer WR holder, most successful coach in general in track and field (besides Bob Kersee maybe)and incredible scientist states this:
    200kg half squat for elite throwers is enough.
    There’s a wrong prioritization going in a lot of programs. They should train way more specific. Something very unique about throwing, is that the fatigue is quite low and athletes could throw 2 times a day without any issues….
    An implement with a given weight has a max velocity and distance it can reach out of a throwing motion. A 350kg Squat for example is completely unnecessary when transfer to maximally required speed and power ends at a 200kg Squat.
    Imagine throwing a piece of paper, no matter how strong you are, you won't be able tho throw it far, because its mass and therefore its velocity potential is extremely low, therefore the optimal strength needed is low as well.
    The best throwers are the tallest, fastest, have crazy rate of force development and most importantly are those who mastered the skill and technique of the throw. The objective max strength standards are not inhumane or unreachable.
