Well of course a thoroughbred is going to have fancier shoes than me! That was so cool. Was like watching a master cobbler at work. I've never seen cork, leather, and brass tacks used on a horse before. Great job!
I thought horseshoes usually went straight onto the hoof, so the addition of the leather pad is interesting. Does it provide extra comfort for the horse, like a padded insole?
I looked it up and it’s a horseshoe pad! Normally, horseshoes *do* go directly on the hoof, but this horse’s hooves grew wonky from improper shodding, which can be painful and put all the wrong pressure on the foot. Think walking with a massive pebble in your shoe *all* the time, so you walk all wonky, and now the rest of your foot hurts because you’re not supposed to walk like that, and then your leg starts hurting and then your hip and etcetera. The horseshoe pad helps absorb the impact of walking and running around so that the hoof can heal better! Which is *super* important for horses, because a horse that can’t walk properly on all four hooves can’t survive much longer and needs to be put down, sadly.
Almost correct. Every time the horses take a step it sends a shockwave up the leg (that helps with circulation). However some horses, that have thin sols, or that have sensitive feet etc, need the pad applied to lessen the load. However in this case, can you see he put some black putty onto the middle of the foot? That putty is there to treat something (depending on what it is). I expect something like thrush etc however I don't know the medical history of this horse. The pad is there to keep the putty simply going off into the grass and keeps the inside of the foot clean. Hope this helped xx
@Thatweirdperson It looks so rough with the file, then driving nails into it and burning it with hot metal. Or when the triangular part under the hoove is scratched out (don't know what it's called). This is my first time ever seeing this process. I always wondered if this hurt their hooves( the grinding, shaving and shoeing). I would love some education on this.
they're just toenails. for the most parts it's just fine, though if you mess up you can hurt the foot, just like if you mess up trimming your own nails.
If it hurt the horse would be kicking. It’s like toenails. Interestingly enough, horses also don’t have nerves in the thick top layer of skin which is why it’s okay to kick them when you want them to go faster.
ALOT of people are confused. This is NOT hurting the horse. It’s like getting a manicure or rocks out of your feet and you’re unable to do anything and someone helps. If you think the shaving of the hoof is hurting it, the horse does not FEEL the hoof. It might, but it’s very relaxing.
I love your asmrs. It would be nice if there were comments of the materials used and the reason the horse need them, like why is it wearing leather pads? What is the black colored thing you putted before the pad? I’m really curious☺️☺️

I have never seen a horseshoe taken off or put on a horse before. 😱 I know the horse was not in pain because it was so calm and cooperative, but that seems like a rough process. I have so many questions…I must read up on this process. Wow.
Googling has lead me to this conclusion: the foot is damaged and a leather sole with medicated or antimicrobial packing underneath is used to protect the foot from further damage as a temporary measure until healed. I was about to ask about the same thing! This is my first time seeing a rubber/leather put in between. Wouldn't it be slippery if put on? Since the horse wouldn't have much grip on the ground. I mean maybe it is being put on horses not meant for racing idk
I dont know a LOT but i did grow up around horses, and the different pads are used for different things. Perhaps this horse is arthritic, and its adding extra support. Or they are preparing for a long trek into wilderness, where they want to protect from bacteria and debris. I know that materials used, plastic, leather, rubber, are all dependent on what activity, or ground they will be on, what time of year it will be. its for extra protection!, could have been an abcess recently or maybe just a soft sole, the leather is probably because the horse isnt walking on gravel or other rocky rough surfaces, in which case plastic would normally be used! also having something like this doesnt really affect grip, the metal shoe however does on concrete and dryer ground!
