I appreciate your honesty about the overgrown hoof being beneficial with that screw. However, if this cow was more routinely trimmed, the screw likely could have been removed earlier.
Well, there is no guarantee when that could have happened. If she'd had her hoof trimmed, and the the screw incident happened a day or so after, she woulda been in big trouble.
Yes it could have, but farming profit margins are very thin, so you have to be very frugal. You can't spend money on everything you would like, unfortunately. Sometimes preventative measures are cut to the bone (so to speak).

Random question... but seeing the height difference when one of those blocks are added, is there any risk for joint issues do to the lateral/medial tilt created to compensate for the difference? With all that weight bearing down on their hoof, I'd think it would have a much more significant impact than in a human anatomy

You said that the overgrown hoof helped in this rare case, but I'm curious. Is it possible that, if this cow HAD been routinely trimmed, the screw could have been found earlier and not been a problem then either?
Cows are only routinely trimmed twice per month as per the industry guidelines. So if she'd stepped on the screw a day after a trim and hid the limp, she'd have suffered in silence for months. And even if she didn't hide the limp she'd still have to have waited 2-4 weeks for Graeme's scheduled visit, but in more pain and with a slower recovery ahead of her.
@@DS9TREK So the big thing at that point would be when the screw was stepped on compared to when the last or next trim would be. If it was a few days before a trim compared to a few days after one.
@@DS9TREK genuine question: if the cows get trimmed twice a month, then, even if the cow hid it’s limp- why would it still suffer for months? Do all of the cows get trimmed, or just the ones that seem they might need it?
it never ceases to amaze me that they dont seem to struggle all that much. how many in a herd(one day at a farm) gives you trouble by struggling and hollering the whole time? also, is there ever a time the vet needs to be called for a course in antibiotics when they have a particularly nasty infection?
IIRC it was work done by Temple Grandin (and documentaries about her are fascinating in themselves) that led to many modern cow management methods, including the use of the crush. Cows apparently actually like the squeeze; it's calming to them.
@@annehaight9963 amazing. i never would have guessed. i though perhaps they got to the point where they trusted the guy to help them, realizing EVENTUALLY and over time that the hoof gp makes them hurt less. learned behavior, ya know?
As a carpenter whose grandparents owned a dairy farm I find this addictive. My grandfather was a tough old bloke but loved his kids and grandkids. I used to watch him in his old milking shed. He'd put the cows in the stall then manually wash them down before putting the suction cups on. Then he'd stand there and scratch his cows on the back or around the ears while talking to them gently while they are their grain and mollasses. My grandfather and grandmother treated their cattle with tender care and the cows were so easy to handle and complete relaxed in the shed. They pretty much used to round themselves up at milking time both ends of the day. They had their routine and some would seek out grandad for some scratches or pats and a treat of sweetened grain. At five years old I'd walk in amongst those cattle and the only danger was getting my toes stood on. Unless of course their was a first time mum with a new born calf they can get very protective but of course my grandparents knew every Cow and knew not to put us in danger. My grandmother had a very tough life but was the sweetest most gentle lady you'd ever meet but was as strong as an ox. I fondly remember my girlfriend meeting her when she was 91. Carol shook hands with her and grandma almost crushed her fingers with her tough but arthritic iron grip. Years of digging out weeds and shrub with a pick and shovel and cutting firewood had made her strong.. My grandad was a grumpy old fella but there is no doubt in my mind he was devoted to his family. I miss them both very much and long for happier, simpler times
I’ve watched a number of your vids now. I couldn’t help but imagining far we’ve come in the care of animals in general, let alone livestock like what you do here. Just makes me wonder how many head of cattle and horses where put down for things like this that (in a relative sense) would be a simple fix, just because they didn’t know about this stuff.
I hope you keep posting. There are other people but I enjoy yours the best I never realized all that with hoofs I did live on a farm most of my childhood but being shown and told how etc....
I once walked around for months with an embroidery needle stuck vertically up my foot without knowing it when I was a kid. Embroidery needles are very thin. I remember I felt a sharp pinch in my foot walking in my house, but I ignored it because I saw there was nothing there and no bleeding, so I was like "whatever just one of those nerve pain moments." but I started feeling a pinch whenever I walked afterwards, except no matter how much I examined my foot I couldn't see anything. And while I felt pain, it wasn't PAIN. Until one day my mom was like "why are you limping so much....." and she decided to look at my foot with a magnifying glass because we were thinking it was a bad invisible bug bite or something. She squeezed my foot just to see if puss or blood would come out anywhere so we could find a wound... and out came an embroidery needle!!! It was a WTF moment. But it was seriously so thin and small, that's why it didn't leave a visible puncture wound or blood, and why I felt it, but it wasn't extraordinary pain either.
I stepped on a screw and got it embedded in the base of my big toe. It was less than an hour to the hospital and the removal. I can not imagine what it feels like to walk around for a prolonged period of time. Ouch!
It would be the same as having a screw stuck to the sole of your shoe. It isn't acutely painful, because you don't have any nerves in the sole of your shoe. Likewise a cow doesn't have any nerves in the hoof horn.

Some days will be better and others make us feel like crawling into a dark hole. Don't put yourself under more pressure. Be kind to yourself, don't feel guilty and "don't sweat the small stuff"! Celebrate every victory however small, remember it is still a positive! 🏅😍 Sometimes chatting to a complete stranger can help. If you ever need a sympathetic and empathetic ear, I have two!😁Just remember we are 5 hours ahead of you here in the uk! 😴

Ma questo dipende dall allevatore...
Yes it could have, but farming profit margins are very thin, so you have to be very frugal. You can't spend money on everything you would like, unfortunately. Sometimes preventative measures are cut to the bone (so to speak).
@@castleanthrax1833 surely if we're admitting that farmers don't make enough to properly care for their cows, then we shouldn't be doing it? It's like deliberately having kids you're not prepared for and then blaming your wages when they all get illnesses from malnourishment.
@@NTVT1999 It's nothing of the sort. Many farmers are working "family farms" and doing it quite tough too. There's an old joke, that's quite appropriate :- Q. What's the worst form of child abuse.
A. Leaving the kids the farm.
Joking aside, many countries subsidise farming to a huge degree. They have to, because they need food. If you don't know what you're talking about, don't comment.
I know it must be so satisfying to you to see the cow walking normally after your work. Then, with it finally being healed after you monitor it, I bet you get a sense of accomplishment and care. it seems like very rewarding work if you ask me and the cows seem content and very well-treated which is nice, after its trim it seemed to just gladly and calmly walk to its designated pen.

Was watching the entire video with my almost 6 year old son. He loved it. I just had a great moment with him, where he said. Give a sub to it right after he saw the animation subscription in the video and said right after that: "this is quality content", I was stumped at his maturity.
The part that stumped me was that, he wanted "to give" a subscription as a mode of encouragement to the quality content he enjoyed.
Random question... but seeing the height difference when one of those blocks are added, is there any risk for joint issues do to the lateral/medial tilt created to compensate for the difference? With all that weight bearing down on their hoof, I'd think it would have a much more significant impact than in a human anatomy
I’m also curious.
I'd guess that as the blocks are not there long term any potential issues are not permanent. Much like with wallets left in a back pocket. If it's not an every day for months your good kinda deal
*edit missed a word
The blocks come off literally within a couple of weeks. It's not really there long enough to cause the type of problems you are thinking about.
They're never walking round on a hard, flat surface (except in the dairy) so it's not a problem.
@@lorewolf If I had to guess I'd assume the block is negligible 90% of the time because dirt/grass has so much give to it. They aren't standing on concrete much.

I cannot help but wonder if the girls get excited on your arrival for their bovine pedicures! “C’mon ladies lets get our pedicures!” 🐄🐄🐄🐄🐄🐮
He's said they do, but not in a good way.
You said that the overgrown hoof helped in this rare case, but I'm curious. Is it possible that, if this cow HAD been routinely trimmed, the screw could have been found earlier and not been a problem then either?
... that's a fair point!
@@katrinathinesen1601 Just the ones that might need it
Do you ever have cows or bulls/steers leave the crush, then turn around, come to you and 'thank' you for relieving their pain?

it never ceases to amaze me that they dont seem to struggle all that much. how many in a herd(one day at a farm) gives you trouble by struggling and hollering the whole time? also, is there ever a time the vet needs to be called for a course in antibiotics when they have a particularly nasty infection?

It's always satisfying to watch a true professional at work.

Hello Tricia how’s the weather over there
I’m officially addicted to your videos! 😄 Cows are people too! Thanks for what you do to make them more comfortable.
3:07 is where the screw foot is 😁🤙
Sorry for asking but What's the difference between wooden, plastic, and rubber blocks?
Terrain and different types injury wood can deteriorate and come off quicker by itself
