  • The Power Block is a mechanical pulley used to pull up or let out nets on fishing vessels. Invented and patented by Mario Puratić in 1953, the power block revolutionized purse seine net hauling. Fewer crew were needed to haul the net and purse seine fishing became safer and more productive.
The 65-foot purse seiner Shenandoah's Puretic Power Block is on display in the Maritime Gallery at the Harbor History Museum, Gig Harbor, WA.

The name (in Torrance CA USA anyway) was spelled Puretic. I would like to find more information about the person Mario Puretic. I knew him in Torrance CA, a memorable individual who once whittled out a model boat right in front of me when I said I liked boats. His kindly wife used to invite me into the house and, every time, made me a great sandwich. Would like to find my teen years friend, Mario's stepson Bob, if he's still alive.
