The daughter of Sam Manekshaw said that the last scene when Vicky smiles at the camera always makes her cry. That must be the highest praise for Vicky. I liked the film, and as Jaby said I'm glad that it was made.

After watching the movie, I really wished it was a series of multiple episodes, which might help getting emotionally connected to the story and also much things were actually not there in the movie, for whatever reasons, but a tv series might've been a better option to express the character of Sir Sam.

I had the exact same reaction when I watched it (in the theatre).
I love Sir Manekshaw, and Vicky Kaushal both. I was excited about this biopic.
But the movie, like you said, looked like highlights of Sir's life (most of which we already knew from the interviews, and stories).
I think the makers missed a trick by trying to show a bit of everything. They could have rather made a story around 1 particular war, which would have had more emotional connect (purely from a story point of view). Something like making a movie on 'Dunkirk', rather than showing snippets of the entire WW2.

Sam Manekshaw is older than Indra Gandhi which is why they casted a younger actor to match the dynamics, there are a lot of older actors in other movies who have been casted as Indra Gandhi and look more similar to her.

This analysis is so on point! While I enjoyed the movie for the movie and the person itself, for anyone who'd go in without watching his interviews or knowing him would feel so much at loss. This movie banks heavily on audience doing some homework instead of treating the audience as someone you are introducing this movie to.
I feel the reason Jaby and Achara could appreciate this one was because of the interview they did watch earlier. Otherwise who knows how lost they'd be!

totally agreed with jaby u can't put life of field marshal Sam Manekshaw sir in 2.3 hrs duration u need a series to focus on very war he fought or was part of to understand more on he did what he did this movie was more like footnotes abt the life of first field marshal officer of India so totally understand why jaby said he couldn't go deeper because it's heck of a story to condense it to 2 and half hour movie

I think it was good you saw interviews of him and his story before watching the movie. From a purely movie character standpoint, Sam Manekshaw is kind of an unbelievable protagonist looool, he's just so cool and chill and charming most of the movie. You mentioned a lack of an "arc" so to speak, but I think he was just THAT guy in real life, just very consistent in his views and opinions and thinking throughout his life (correct me if I'm wrong about this).

The movie was good but it could have been better if they would've made this into a series of episodes cause the lead character has such a long span of lifetime and so many significant events have happened throughout this lifetime that it felt they just tried to touch as much life events as possible within the 2 n half hour runtime. Whenever I was starting to get involved in one of the particular historical incidents of Mr. Sam Manickshaw life, it used to shift to the next event within short period of time, all these episodes could have been showcased in pretty much more detailed way if they would have made this into a series, where probably viewers could've connected to all of his life events more.

Started watching this one yesterday but it was late so I watched only the 1st half, will finish today 😁
Off topic but since I'm early, I wanted to ask you guys to start doing watchalongs for older classics. You've been building a very nice collection of movie reactions, doing not only recent stuff but also stuff from the 90s and 2000s, as well as doing south movies alongside Hindi ones. So I think you should start doing some older classics too 😊 Here are some suggestions:
    Sholay (1975), masala/curry western
    MayaBazar (1957) fantasy folktale/romcom
Gol Maal (1979) comedy about a modern young man pretending to be conservative to please his boss and getting caught in a web of lies
Anand (1971) dramedy about how a dying man decides to spend his last few months
Pyaasa (1957) drama about a struggling writer, still very relevant now
Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) a personal fav of mine, comedy drama (but mostly comedy) about twins separated at birth, very iconic and was remade several times
Awaara (1951) social drama/romance directed and led by Raj Kapoor (Rishi's dad, the superstar of the 60s) and with Nargis (Sanjay Dutt's mom)
Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) comedy about a misogynist who forbids his brothers from dating but they fall in love
Hoping to see watchalongs for some of these this year 😊

Vicky Kaushal turned Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw into a caricature where the camera and the director focused entirely on his monologue dialogues and stooped walk. Speaking every dialogue in the same way, almost emotionless, made this film 'Ajhel'. As far as scripts are concerned, generally films made on such great people focus completely on two-three most important events of their lives. Here the director, while trying to show from childhood to retirement, did not show anything properly.
The misfortune of this film is that it was forgotten within a week. Instead of watching this film for two and a half hours, it is better to read Field Marshal Manekshaw ji's page on Wikipedia. Vicky Kaushal is a good actor but the poor direction here has made him average. The director has done injustice to the emotions that were aroused by the first poster of this film. Making biographical films in India has become like making a dish by watching TH-cam recipes.
Film people consider everything as fashion and destroy it. There is a lot of difference between looking like a person in a poster with make-up and carrying it off in a film.

Fatima Sana Shaikh performed really well. But I don't think she brought the true character of Indhira Gandhi, atleast in the way she used her eyes. In this film, by looking at her eyes, u always felt her as an insecured person. We know Indira Gandhi never looked like an insecured person. At times of emergency she felt insecured and may be thats why she behaved the way she did. But looking at the limited footages available of the real Indira Gandhi, she never looked insecured and desperate. I know many would disagree, but thats the way I felt. Its true that Sam Bahadur was an alpha male. May be since this is the story of him, she was portrayed little vulnerable infront of him.

@@rajeshmahapatra9243 I love Premam but to me Hridayam felt like a failed attempt at recreating Premam. The direction, cinematography, acting were good, but for me the script was a big let down. Jaby didn't care much for Premam (which was surprising to me) so honestly I have no idea how he would feel about Hridayam.

Premam was better for sure….but Hridayam was also a decent opinion imo…..let’s just agree to disagree

I still can't digest the fact that a garbage movie like animal did overwhelmingly great than this movie.. I am not saying that this movie was perfect, because too many badass and important historical event were left out.. Maybe to avoid controversy over congress.. But still this movie was 10times better than Animal.

Sam Bahadur is a lesson on how not to make a movie on a war veteran and legend, who has had the fame for brilliant military tactics. Seriously like this is a movie based on a legend who was known for warfare and sans any war scenes. This just looked like a blatant joke of a movie. This is like making Dum Aloo sans Aloo.
