    Everlast isn't a group, but a guy. He almost died the day he fonished this album. He had been feeling chest pains for hours and his friend/producer got him to go to the hospital where they determined he had a torn aortic valve and was bleeding internally. Because he listened to his friend, he'll turn 55 in 12 days (8/18/69).

    Sympathy and empathy both refer to a caring response to the emotional state of another person, but a distinction between them is typically made: while sympathy is a feeling of sincere concern for someone who is experiencing something difficult or painful (which I believe Amber was describing as something that everyone be capable of doing), 'EMPATHY' involves actively sharing in the emotional experience of the other person, often and in it most sincere form, when having experienced something akin to, very similar as or exactly like what another has experienced. I think most people are capable of sympathy (pity and sorrow for someone else's misfortune) but empathy is not automatic nor can it be expected. Some people are cruel. Some are ignorant. Some are willfully blind to suffering beyond what they've experienced. Others simply have no baseline to understand what is means to be dirt poor, backed into a corner with no way out, filled with loss, etc... and are therefore incapable of empathy. Like the lyricist sang; you can only know if you walk in someone else's shoes.

    • @deborahwinder3617
      @deborahwinder3617 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Such a great explanation. I always think that even if you can't actually empathize with someone because your own experiences don't even allow you to imagine another person's pain, the important thing is effort. When we ask people to be more empathetic, we're really asking them to try. You may not be able to fully know what they're feeling, but at least they know you care. Sometimes telling someone you wish you could carry some of their pain for them is the best you can do.

      Yes people with no empathy for others are sociopaths .

    • @SMccrate01
      @SMccrate01 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@deborahwinder3617 That's exactly it, empathy is an active act of imagination and it takes an effort to try to imagine being in another person's shoes. People willing to make that effort are also more likely to take some action on it even if that's just listening to someone who needs to be heard. Experiencing another person's pain by making that effort then just shrugging about it would be sort of ghoulish--and I don't think empathetic people would make that effort and then do nothing.

    Amber, I 100% agree with you. It should be enough that we have all been through difficult situations to understand that someone else might be going through something as bad or worse, and cut them some slack. Unfortunately, humans come with something called the fundamental attribution error, which is a mouthful, but basically means that when we're trying to explain why something happened to us, we tend to credit ourselves (make an internal attribution) when it's something good, deciding it happened because we worked hard, as an example. When it's a bad outcome, we tend to blame others or bad luck (an external attribution). But the opposite happens when we are looking at others. We tend to unconsciously assume that when bad things happen to other people, they deserved it for some reason (an internal attribution). The good thing is that once someone realizes they come with this built in bias, they know to look for it next time they find themselves judging someone they don't know, and considering situational factors instead of just deciding they're a bad person.

Every generation has their musical influences, I feel like the 90's was the great melting pot of influences. Generation X was sick of being told who we could be and what we could achieve. Our music reflected that rebellious spirit of change. Loreena McKennitt! I have so many favorites but the first one of hers I heard was "Mystics Dream". Also you have to check out her live arrangement of W.B.Yeats "The Stolen Child" video by Ron B from her Nights From The Alhambra concert. This woman is so accomplished. You should really check her out. She's had a career spanning four decades.
    If you love instruments...she does a lot of renditions of folk music but she also writes her own songs. Her music has Celtic and middle eastern elements. I think you would love her. She can be considered 'World Music' or 'New Age'. She's also from Canada.
    She's also been given so many honors. She's an honorary Colonel of the Royal Canadian Air Force and she's also a French Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. She's been invested with the Order of Canada and Manitoba, as well as being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals. There are so many others I can't possibly list.
    I've been watching since you guys started. You really need to do Loreena McKennitt sometime. ❤️🙂

    I like what seems to be the message of this song, and that is to not judge a book by its cover because you can’t judge someone’s life and how they are, unless you have walked a mile in their shoes, because who knows what that person has been through or is going through that you can choose to judge them so basically what it is saying is to think before you speak and think before you act

    Such an incredible song. I'm so glad y'all chose the explicit version of this instead of the radio edit. While the lyrics can be offensive to some, it really gets the point across of the story. Amber was completely right. Who are we to judge? We should have empathy for our fellow man, regardless of how they got into the situation they are in. We are ALL human and we ALL make mistakes in life. Because God doesn't care where you've been...He cares about where you are going. Love you guys!

    The 90's were so diverse and such a departure from the 80's. Grunge and introspective song writing were more important than catchy hooks. It was also one of the best decades for women artist.
    A few suggestions. More Jewel and Natalie Merchant. "Hands" by Jewel is one of the best songs about selflessness and compassion. Also, for your daughters Natalie Merchant's "Wonder" is a great song about fulfilling your destiny. And finally, please check out Maria McKee. She was with a cult band in the 80's called Lone Justice. Kind of a country, rock, alternative mix. Three songs that I love are "Don't Toss Us Away", "Am I the Only One", and "Nobody's Child"

    AMEN, Amber. To ALL that you said in the break at around 5 min. I wish more people thought as you did. The world would BE in a much better place.
    I AM glad you are a mother who can pass on this message to your kids (& a teacher still? or even again in future - to pass this important message on to your students.)
    Of course J. seems to be of the same thought (which is helpful in a marriage) & can help cement the message in your kids. J. can also, even right now, pass this message on to his students (or, when school goes back into session in the Fall.)
    Have a good day, the both of you.
    Love from Canada. ❤

    I worked at an elementary school and our principal was just barely middle aged (I had about 10 years on him) and he was walking around the campus singing the lyrics he could remember of this song. When I heard him singing, I told him to go to his office and look up the lyrics before singing that around kids. He caught me later and started laughing while telling me thanks...that it had such a happy rhythm, but he had no idea it was about crystal meth... I laughed and and replied...no problem boss .. lmao.
