My understanding is that after the Raven Queen ascended, the Gau Drashari were like “the wizards are fucking with shit they shouldn’t be. We have to do something about it before they destroy everything.” So they added the Arboreal Caelix to Avalir to tamp down on the amount of power the Wizards of Avalir have at their disposal
I commented that I had a clarification & couldn't post as it might contain spoilers. But then I reread what you wrote 5 times and actually nothing you wrote is essentially wrong. My bad for a wrong "um, actually" sort of post.
Agreed, although mainly for the players at this point, the whole importance of that is more just too many coincidences lining up in regards to ascending gods. By now, it's quite suspicious that those things lined up exactly around the same time when they're now investigating another attempt to ascend. I think that's mainly the explanation for the shock that rippled around the table at that point
Something I love about Calamity is how flawed all of the characters are. Greek tragedies always included the idea of a fatal flaw - some deep flaw in a character that ends up being the thing that leads them to their demise. In this case, each of the party characters has their own fatal flaw: Patia has her need to keep up appearances, Laerryn has her desperate need to achieve her goals, etc. And the enjoyment for me is watching these deeply flawed people march towards doom. There's definitely a lot in this about the price of arrogance and hubris.
One thing to correct from you little wrap-up at the end there - Laerryn didn't work on the Arboreal Calix. What she created is the Astral Leywright, which would give the city the ability to travel between planes of existence. The Arboreal Calix is something that was added to Avalir by the druids of the Gau Drashari, and upon the activation of the Astral Leywright, the Calix siphoned a ton of magical energy from the city. Also, Dweomer is a warforged (a sentient robot basically) that works as Laerryn's assistant of sorts. Also also, the Replenishment comes every 7 years, the 119 years was the amount of time since the last Apogee Solstice, during which the Raven Queen ascended. TLDR: Laerryn made the Leywright to travel planes, she doesn’t like or understand the Calix which was made by druids, Dweomer is her assistant, and 119 years ago was an Apogee Solstice and not just any old 7-year-cycle Replenishment.
13:31 - who is Quay? Quay is Laerryn’s nickname for Loquatius. 47:14 - I do love that the gods of Exandria aren’t all seeing gods. Sometimes there’s stuff even they don’t know. And I love that they aren’t perfect beings that we Earth ppl expect a “god” to be. They are way more akin to the Greek pantheon of gods who were drama queens and all the stuff they were up to was essentially soap opera worthy shenanigans. There really is no one-to-one analogy for a totally virtuous god; something I think various Critters sometimes forget. 51:37 - who is Dweomer? Dweomer is a robot/construct assistant working for Laerryn.
@JohnSmith-rm1posecond additional info for reference Aeor is where Bolo (Quay’s +1 to Patia’s party) is from, and is another former floating city with a magic power trip in the history of critical role, aeor is very important location in CR so even tho Bolo is a joke character, Aeor is not a joke location
Yeah, if someone wants another real world reflection of the gods Matt has always said the Dawnfather is the closest reflection to the abrahamic religions God. There is love there but also there is fury and destruction. But yeah, every God in Exandria has strengths and flaws... The Greek Pantheon is a wonderful comparison. They are all shades of grey. Prime or Betrayer. Some just have more light parts or dark parts...But they all have both.
The telepathic bond is a spell that allows for a number of creatures mass of 8 to be able to telepathically communicate from large distances. But it lasts 8 hours and is good for greater communication.
Nydas Patia AND Laerryn are besties but are flawed due to their ambition to “elevate Avalir’s legacy”, Nydas pocketing money for secret projects (the taxmen) and funding Laerryn’s secret Projects (astral leywright), while Patia makes any of the lower people (construction workers, assistants, porters, etc etc) forget without consent through magic “should we add this porter to miss por’co’s list of friends with bad memory” was because the taxmen were a secret project and the porter should NOT know they exist Laerryn’s goal is to Teleport the floating City of Avalir to another plane (remember how Syngorn, the city of elves in modern day tal’dorei, can teleport to the feywild) but due to that Solar/Angel bow Avalir can teleport to the domain of the Celestials which hasn’t been done before those 3 are SCHEMERS AND I LOVE IT also: porters are essentially people who “teleport” others and items as a city service
im just gonna leave this here, ive read on reddit that a few of the upcoming episodes in campaign 3 are gonna be a separate story that takes place during the calamity. Like they have different characters from the main cast and they should be watchable without having watched campaign 3. if i find more info as they are released and i remember, ill let you know c:
I think the nuclear bomb analogy was mine. Glad it helped. Some other good (non-spoilery) comments under this video by others help refine that idea of unchecked power and secret and the imminent potential for catastrophe that I was aluding to.
If you like this there’s gonna be another exu calamity mini campaign led by Brennan starting next week. It’s called doom Also I love every single one of the characters for the reasons you mentioned. They’re not perfect. They’re horribly flawed

Ah that makes sense when you think about it that way! Thanks for sharing!

It's definitely intriguing watching all of this go down. It's a tragedy you can't look away from
