For real I absolutely adore his work in a sea of uninspired content and was devastated when he I realised he only had a couple of videos. Your production quality and skill are crazy good
I really like how this is not only a buff for the physical attacking Parasect, but also a buff for the ghost type in general in Gen 3. Ghost being exclusively a physical type in gen 3, and Parasect being stronger with physical attack, is a great idea.
I like how all of your buffs have not only focused on ingame viability over competitive viability, but also fit a fitting theme for the Pokémon, such as Pidgeot’s “master pilot that takes things a bit too seriously” and Paracect’s “you can’t kill what’s already dead”. Not sure if you take requests, but if you do, it’d be cool to see how you’d fix Kricketot in Platinum.
This Parasect would prob (in my limited knowledge) be really good in gen 3 NU. It can wall the Normals (Raticate and Vigoroth), beat Chimeco, and be generally useful with its bulk and access to Spore. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised if it has a niche in gen 3 UU since it can switch into Kangaskhan and threaten Lunatone.
The way you leaned into the lore for this one is so incredibly cool. A haunted husk of a bug draining the life energy out of opponents after the spores that killed it have lulled them to sleep feels exactly like the way that Parasect should play to start with.
Something I might have considered since you were hesitant to give Parasect Leech Seed would be Ingrain! Still gives you that passive recovery while not dealing attrition damage, and both plants and fungi would root themselves down to something, whether that be with roots or mycelia. It even has a built in drawback of forcing you to stay in until the fungus dies, which I think fits the theming really well.
That doesn’t make sense because Parasect is mostly/already dead, it should be either Grass/Psychic or Grass/Ghost referencing mind control or possessing its corpse.
@Matheus Demello how doesn't that make any sense? It's a bug being taken over by a fungus/parasite, a bug is not a plant, and a fungus/mushroom isn't a plant either, bug/ghost makes sense I mean sure, you can make the argument for it's first form, but I think our guy made the right choice making paras a grass/bug type and parasect a bug/ghost type
@@gigastrike2 Doesn’t make sense? Ghost/Grass is better because the *BUG* is *DEAD* the mushroom is in control and there are other mushroom Pokémon that are mushroom.
About mushrooms not being a good fit for grass types, GameFreak has the nasty habit of lumping fungi into the grass typing, even with later gens. Gen III has the Shroomish line, Gen V has the Foongus line, and Gen VII has Morelull and Shiinotic. I think GameFreak sees the grass typing more as something they can lump nature related and soil-growing creatures in, instead of a purely plant specific typing. The Bug type also has this problem where crabs, spiders and other arthropods are lumped together in one group, though it makes a little bit more sense than fungi being grass type.
@@Glory2Snowstar pure bug type Accelgor is indeed weird. It rather could’ve been (part) Dark type since it appears to be based on a Ninja, or even Ground type because it seems to be wearing a motorbike helmet.
Fungi were considered plants at one point. I dare to guess that Gen1's developers were still taught in school that Fungi were plants. And it just became the status quo for later generations, even if we know better now
Biologically they are different but aesthetically and the way they survive are similar. I think its a good fit. Better than just inventing a new "mushroom" type or associating mushrooms with say normal or poison types.
At first i kept thinking "wouldn't this be better it you just did it in a later generation?" But then you addressed that with the idea that doing stuff in FRLG is like camping/roughing it, which I found to be a very charming comparison. Great vid!
Thanks! So naturally most mons WOULD get better as generations go on, with the physical special split and better move pools in general, but that won’t stop me from mixing in an early Gen vid every now again. But they will be tougher on average.
@@ZenModeYT Is nice to see you use old gens to make mons better! I wish you can do something with oddish/gloom/vileplume line since they were ALWAYS under venusaur shadow. One more thing would be dope to see in your videos is the rework of the TM's the improved mons can learn and here I'm gonna adress what others say in the coments, maybe parasect can't learn shadow ball naturally but seriously needs to be allow to learn it by TM, other mons that don't even have the slightly supernatural, haunting, spectre vibe learn it totally for free, so parasect would also for sure doing it, besides there is a couple of grass type moves in their TM list that need to go. Keep the AWESOME work!!
38:39 I think it wouldve been interesting if you gave agatha a parasect too, both because its ghost and to see how your modified pokemon work against you
If Snorlax, Cinderace and Clawitzer can all learn Shadow Ball, I feel like we could justify giving it to Parasect as a TM move, though I guess it wasn't really needed here. Kinda shocked how a simple type change and some learn set adjustments could affect one of the worst Pokémon ever in such a positive way. Great job as always!
@@NecromancyForKids yet its Dex entries only ever talk about shooting water and how it can move quickly through water at over 60 knots (base speed of only 59).
@@whatthefrancium Snorlax is known for eating anything, even moldy foods. Emerald even talks about how it’s used as a children’s playground while it’s asleep because it’s to docile. Gyarados is the one known for Hyper Beams.
I love how you incorporate lore into your adjustments, because, for example, anyone could just give a Pokémon the best moves of their type and call it a day, without giving much thought to whether the move logically or thematically matches the Pokémon. You, however, take on the more elaborate mission of making a Pokémon viable without "breaking character". Props for that. btw, when you reached the Pokémon Tower Rival fight, you totally missed a chance to point out his line "Is your Pokémon dead?" and reply with "Yes, actually!"
LOVE the switchup on this, swapping to such an underrepresented type in kanto both makes sense and would make this line so much better. keep up the great work.
Parasect my beloved, I'm glad to see you finally reach your true potential. Seriously, this is what I've always wanted and then some! Bug/Ghost always made sense to me, but I never thought about Dream Eater working so well with Spore. Mostly because, like most, I never thought about Dream Eater.
Yeah dream eater is so niche and almost never used, but it works so perfectly here I was so happy! It almost seemed busted at point, but hey, it’s Parasect. He’s had it too tough for too long!
@@ZenModeYT feel like giving my own buffs for it in later gens using your version of Parasect as base for them. First I would pull down X-Scissor from level66 to 39. Second I would buff it’s HP, Atk, Defense and Spd from 50, 95, 80 and 80 to 85, 110, 95 and 95 respectively in total buffing it’s BST from 405 to 480. Third it would give it two new moves to learn: one that’s more or less a general buff to physical attacking ghost types that learn it and the other a Signature move to help further set it apart from other sleep users. I’ll start with the signature move. The signature move in question is Zombifying spores: “the User scatters its spores to force the opposing Pokémon into a zombified state” Base Power -- Catagory: Status Type: Ghost Targeting: Single-Target, Adjacent. Is effected by the same abilities spore is Effects: the Pokémon hit by Zombifying spores will be given the zombie status which to put it simply it will be put to sleep for 2-5 turns and take 1/8 of its health in damage for every turn its asleep, wearing off when the Pokémon wakes up. To ensure it won’t outclass spore it’s PP will be maximum of 5 (8 with max pp ups) and it will only be learned when Parasect reaches level 62. The second one is Siphon Soul: “the User uses a hand or Claw-like appendage to drain the opponents life force” Base Power: 85 Catagory: Physical Type: Ghost Targeting: Single Target Abilities it interacts with: Rough Skin, Iron Barbs, Liquid Ooze,. Contact? Yes Bonus Effects: Heals the user for half the damage dealt, Base Power increased by 1.3x and healing increased to 75% of the damage dealt if the user has less Hp than the opponent. Examples of Pokémon that would learn it including but not limited to: Parasect (Hence why I mentioned it) Banette Duskinoir Driftblim Mimikyu
@@ultimapower6950 I'm gonna share my changes as well since I'm making a romhack of Crystal called Redv2.0 with Physical/Special split and later gen moves. I like the Bug/Grass typing and I don't want to change it, but I am aware of its drawbacks. Thus, I am leaning onto the gimmick by buffing it HARD. Paras gains +20 HP and +15 Atk, making its stats 55/85/55/45/55/25. I really love this pattern of BST ngl. Slight buff but nothing too crazy. What's crazy however is Parasect. I buffed it hard: +25 HP, +15 Atk, +30 Def, and +60 Sp. Def, making its base stats 85/110/100/60/140/30. Yes, it's insane but remember, its typing is littered with weaknesses. This bulk makes sense because look at that BIG mushroom. But, x4 and x2 weaknesses can deal with it very well. That bulk allows it to switch in on neutral hits much more easily than before. It also gets X-Scissor and Leech Life, allowing it to be a good offensive Pokémon.
Seeing these videos would make me love to see you just overhaul the pokedex with a lot of "fixed" pokemon. Like a Drayano hack, but your own. Research into pokemon that haven't been explored enough like this one.
Amazing how much the type change did in order to turn Parasect, a mon I'd never have thought of as bulky, into such a tank. You're doing a wonderful job with the videos; keep it up!
Im impressed by Parasect's ability to do so well without any stat changes, even with a mediocre moveset still. Its interesting how basic changes can make some pokemon really take advantage of what they already had
this series you make is fuckin excellent dude. it really shows how much you care about making a pokemon special for an average player. you almost create personalities, that no doubt the devs had intended, but sometimes didn't realize. as if you're making rpg characters that have some variability of story and character depending on their party members and the player's intentions. im happy this doesn't go too far into "making x op" or "min maxing" pokemon, but rather making the fantasy become more alive. one thing i think you may want to consider is translation. for moves and for the pokemon's name. the fantasy of pokemon tries to be consistent among translations, but that may not hold true. or maybe the translations unearth some aspect to a pokemon you didn't consider. especially in regards to movepool as the translation from japanese to english or japanese to any other language might really change what the intended purpose of a move or pokemon may have been. go off man, talk yo shit
Parasect: "Can you feel your heart burning? Can you feel the struggle within? The fear within me is beyond anything your soul can make. You cannot kill me in a way that matters."
Videos like these are a nice little demonstration to casual and hardcore fans that there are a lot of factors that go into how useful a Pokemon can be, even if it's just a niche. tbh if someone wanted to make Parasect viable all they'd have to do is bump its speed a lot, which might make it a bit too obnoxious if they didn't want it to be outclassed by Breloom as a Spore user. Making it part ghost is a lot more interesting. Now if only Nightmare operated like Curse from a ghost-type, where the effect stays until the afflicted target switches out instead of having to reapply it every time the target goes to sleep. Damage being done only while the target is asleep, of course.
I adore this series, considering both the design and gameplay potential of some underrated Pokémon and polishing them to a fine crisp! I find it cute that Parasect now shares a Type with Shedinja, considering both are dead cicada husks. As a Parasect Enjoyer this makes me super happy, wonderful work!
Okay I LOVE the concept of a Ghost type Parasect and I can't believe I'd never thought of it before! I'm definitely going to use that concept for my own game because it fits so perfectly, especially with the moves like Nightmare and Dream Eater to pair with Spore. For modern games I'd also give it things like Infestation and Night Slash off the top of my head, but I'd probably change the Abilities to Effect Spore and Cursed Body (for Parasect, not sure for Paras) to keep with the parasitie spreading theme. And I still like Giga Drain as a TM move for it, but I understand why you didn't use it for this video. I do think a case can be made for it being Grass/Ghost because, like it or not, mushrooms are CONSISTENTLY classified under the Grass type in Pokémon. In the real world they are fungi and genetically closer to animals than plants, but Pokémon is a different world and I personally will just accept that the Grass type includes mushrooms despite them not technically being plants. That being said, I still prefer Bug/Ghost for Parasect, though it's a matter of framing: Is the Pokémon the crab/bug thing and it happens to have its mind and body controlled by the mushroom, or is the Pokémon the mushroom that is controlling the Bug? Since Paras isn't being controlled I'd say the Pokémon is the Bug and therefor Parasect should be Bug type still (and I'd also change Paras to be mono Bug)
I really appreciate how much detail you put into these changes, whether it be paying attention to flavor text, paying mind to how the Pokémon was designed to function, or making sure it’s solid pick in relation to other mons. Your restraint in particular makes these videos very Interesting to watch, most ROM hacks and videos like this would usually beeline towards a stat or type change, while you use them as more of a last resort that needs proper justification. Keep up the good work!
Love the ghost typing--that's such a good idea. I think it would honestly be fine to give it shadow ball over shadow punch because most pokemon gain some kind of elemental power from their type (why else would decidueye learn Poltergeist when it's just an owl?) and it's really common for pokemon with low BSTs to get strong moves early to compensate
Game Freak had TWO amazing excuses to make a regional variant of Paras and Parasect with Legends Arceus and with the Paradox Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet to give us a non mushroom version of them.
Once again, another amazing video. It took a while to really appreciate how effective the change to ghost/bug is, as another commented said: it not only made Parasect better, but it made ghost types themselves better. I just worry how this Parasect would look in future gens due to how damn perfect the changes fit this game.
Honestly outside of powercreep it’s still a pretty good change what with the addition of Shadow Claw, buffed Leech Life and Ghosts just getting stronger over the years. It’s not the best Mon around but its got a lot of going for it now instead of being the Mon that takes the most damage possible
Silver Wind has one justification, and thats the spores. A thick, shimmering cloud of toxic dust Silver Wind also has a chance to Omni-Boost, like mushrooms using their mycelium to connect to each other and share nutrients. I love that you did Paras, it and Parasect are my favorite little guys
Imagine an ability that improves attack/special attack by 1.3x if the opponent is asleep, calling it "opportunist" or something similar. That would synergize super well with spore/dream eater tech.
I love how you make changes for these Pokémon based on staying true to their flavor/character rather than “give everything a setup move and sweep.” There were some moments, particularly in the penultimate rival fight and Elite Four fights where the narration was pretty off sync with the video, but overall I really enjoyed the video!
I was a bit confused by it at first but then I realized that it was done so he could narrate at his own pace while showing the entire fight (sped up) on screen. Rather than having to constrict the length of narration against each individual opponent Pokemon to the amount of time it was on screen, which varies and is often quite short
Bug/Ghost Parasect my beloved (*furiously takes notes for my fanmade Parasect evo*) I think this one's your best video yet, honestly. Parasect deserves so much better, and I think you've done a good job at giving him a great niche while still keeping him balanced. If there's one Pokémon I'd wanna see next, I think I'd have to give it to Patrat in BW2. I'm not a fan of making Pokémon early game fodder, my main philosophy is to have every Pokémon have some sort of niche by the time you finish the game, and I think Patrat and Watchog in particular could do really well under your care.
I feel you did an excellent job on this one. Giving Parasect the Ghost typing in Kanto really helped the bug take advantage of its decent bulk and give it an invaluable niche that not a lot of other Kanto mons could replicate in FRLG while also keeping true to the flavor of the mon without making it too overpowered. It just goes to show how awful the Grass/Bug type combination is and how crippled the Paras line is because of it. Shedding that Grass typing Midgame for Ghost really does wonders.
I hunted a Shiny Paras in Lets Go when I decided to replay it a couple months before Legends came out, named him Huzin and we crushed the game together. Then once PLA released I was walking around and found him again in the Marsh. My first shiny in that game was the most recent one I hunted. I love that little buddy.
I loved how you used immunity as the ability to make the most of the tech available in gen 3. Dry skin would be interesting from gen 4 onwards, for sure, but I feel like Immunity's upgrade, comatose, would be a very fitting pick. Can't imagine burns or paralysis mattering much to the zombie bug...
Honestly Parasect should get another evolution like Primeape and Bisharp got. That way it can also get a useable base stat total. This would be preferable to getting a regional variant.
I absolutely love these videos so much, this kind of design thinking speaks directly to me and I can’t wait to see this series grow! I had a couple of unsolicited thoughts that might be interesting suggestions: -I know in your Chikorita video you said you would be straying away from editing base stats. Instead of making any changes at the beginning, perhaps *after* your run is over you determine whether the Pokémon could have used an extra 10 or so points in one of their stats. GameFreak does do base stat buffs like that between generations, so that might be a good way to honor that. -Depending on how comfortable you are with editing the ROMs, perhaps you can give some of your newly created pokemon to certain trainers that didn’t originally use them. For example, replacing one of Agatha’s non ghost types with Parasect in this episode. -Once you get a good number of these videos out, I think it would be really cool to do a special episode where you include all of your buffed Pokémon into one run! Either through making a team of them or editing trainers to use them more often. Just a really cool way to crossover all of your ideas. Keep up the great work! I watched all 4 of your videos multiple times now and I can’t wait to see what you do next:)
Weaker than Paras(ect) and found in Hoenn, eh? I'm guessing Luvdisc, or maybe Delcatty or Spinda. There are an unfortunate number of mediocre/bad Pokémon in Hoenn though, there are many more possibilities. The easiest fix for Luvdisc would be to make it evolve into Alomamola like it looks like it should, but I understand they _really_ wanted to stick to the soft-reboot concept of GenV. Anyways I love the content! This is something I've enjoyed thinking about for a long time, though my methods are usually much less detailed and subtle-I just buff their stats (or give them Volt Tackle in the case of every physical electric type ever). I love that you're finding other more interesting ways to accomplish a similar goal!
After playing a hackROM that adds several new moves, it surprises me Game Freak hasnot thought on a Bug-type Leech Life named "Parasite", would fit so well with this!
If Parasect is going to gain the Ghost type upon evolution, it should be inexchange for the Bug type, since it's the bug that's dead. Also, and I'm not sure how necessary this is, but if you ever do a "How I would fix Ninetales" video, I'd definitely stitch the Ghost Type onto it, considering in it's bases on the Kitsune, a Japanese fox yokai with paranormal abilities. It already learns a ton of Ghost Type moves, and according to the Pokedex, it's been known to put curses on people that piss it off.
@@robertlupa8273 Well technically those all came long after Parasect so it’s all retroactive. That said I’d argue Bug/Ghost is fine because yes the bug is dead, but it’s still the corporeal body that’s being used, similar to Shedinja. I think that better illustrates the creepiness of it, giving it the ghost typing to say “the bug is now dead” instead of removing the bug typing to say “the bug is gone”.
Hey! I was correct in guessing Paras! Nice! Yeah, Paras and Parasect are so saddening in how they aren't able to do much. But you absolutely smashed them out of the park in this one and made them incredible! And you made it so that Parasect can still function as a great cather Mon, just amazing! Thank you so much for showing some much needed love to this bug...mushroom...organism. A Hoenn Pokemon next? Well, I have to pray with all my being that it's Skitty and Delcatty then! C'mon, make them live up to their reputation in Mystery Dungeon and show them the power of a cat with a mission!
I have a good feeling that it _is_ Skitty, since he said he'll be covering "a Pokemon even weaker than Paras[ect], as we take a lap through the Hoenn region" and the only fully evolved Pokemon with less BST than Parasect's 405 are: Dustox, Beautifly (unlikely that he'd cover two bugs in a row), Shedinja (previous point, plus Shedinja is actually pretty good), Nosepass (got an evolution in Gen 4, so I doubt he'd try to fix something that is already fixed), Mawile, Sableye (as bad as they are, they're still pretty usable, although I speak from personal experiences that they fall off _hard_ in the lategame), Plusle, Minun (they have _exactly_ 405 BST) Volbeat, Illumise (they got a stat buff in Gen 6) Luvdisc (don't even bother fixing that one; it's found way too late) Spinda (actually a pretty likely choice too, now that I think about it) Delcatty (notoriously underwhelming, probably mostly intended to be used in Contests and not in battles) And yes, Masquerain has higher stats than Parasect. Doesn't make it any less sucky.
Interesting...my idea for Paras/Parasect was to make Paras a Bug/Grass and Parasect a Grass/Ghost. Mushrooms and other sedentary creatures like anemones, sponges, and coral can fit the "grass" archetype based on their _behavior_ - the same way that non-ferrous metals like copper mirrors or bells are still Steel type. Or the Bird type being renamed during development into the Flying type but still retaining a lot of "it's a bird" logic to its matchups and move pool.
Suggestion: making sunflora a grass/fire type. Sunflowers are some kf my favorite flowers and i think Sunflora deserves a little love. I'd probably give it drought and access to flamethrower Edit: or give it flash fire and sunny day (which I think it already gets)
I love the Paras line. That typing is so abysmal though. Lately I’ve had this fixation on ‘mediocre’ pokemon from earlier gens. Ekans especially. Like, in fire red, the poisonous rattlesnake then cobra can’t even learn poison fang on it’s own without breeding? What gives? Would love to see your take on the big purple snake.
Turns out that spore is straight cracked. If you're learning it at 24 when you evolve, maybe consider reducing the PP of it. Also means you have a good target for PP ups/Max over time. I'm also shocked that he didn't need any stat buffs and the type change alone was perfect.
This is such a great series and is inspiring me into getting back into a passion project that I had a few years back somewhat similar to this, love your stuff bro, keep it up!
I could also see Bug/Dark given their love of dark places and the sinister nature of Parasect's mushroom. Bug/Fairy is also a possibility in later gens due to the affiliation mushrooms have with the fae but that would have to be for gens 6 onward.
WRT Leech Seed: I do think the move is really representative of the real-life mushroom it's based on, since it spreads spores that will eventually claim the lives of others as well. I respect the decision to hold back on it due to worrying about the power level of the move, though in that case I'd probably have replaced one of Nightmare/Dream Eater/Destiny Bond with it. I think an opportunity to have another Grass-type move was missed here, as while you removed the type from Parasect, Paras still has the typing and you removed all the other Grass-type moves it got. Should let the past type of the earlier evolution represent itself a little more, I feel. All in all this was still a fun video, I love seeing theorycraft redesigns be implemented into games! Really adds a lot to the argument, than just "here's a list of changes I would make in my ideal romhack"
That’s a good point, since one could theoretically keep Paras unevolved but see it learn no new grass moves. Might as well just make Paras pure bug at that rate
I agree shadow ball shouldn't have been a level up move but imo you should have made it tm compatible so it gets its best STAB move. Either way, I loved this video, that's the only thing I would have personally changed.
Genuinely some great videos you’ve made. I’m loving every bit of making bad Pokémon more viable during gameplay. If you are open to any suggestions, I’d love to see one for Woobat and Swoobat in Black and White. Keep up the amazing content!
omg the idea of making parasect ghost type is amazing, i never thought about it but it makes total sense, also no more just 1 ghost type in the whole game, i love this kind of videos keep up the amazing work!
Interesting fact: the real life mushroom doesn’t control the insect’s brain, rather it’s muscle system. The insect is completely aware of what’s happening, but they can’t do anything about it
I was at first a little confused that you didn't simply make Parasect Ghost/Grass instead of Bug/Ghost, since the bug is the one that's dead, and future mushroom Pokemon are all treated as Grass-Type anyway (As Lockstin always says, just because a Pokemon has a certain type, doesn't mean they are that type, and it's something I agree with. If you're grass-like, it's good enough.) But it grew on me as I kept watching. Particularly since the Paras line is likely based off cicadas, much like the Shedinja line, so being Bug/Ghost is oddly fitting
Actually Shedinja is the reason it makes sense to me. Shedinja is just a dead husk of a bug, but you’d never just call it a bug type, or just a ghost type, it would inform too little. The Bug/Ghost is there because although the bug is now dead/undead, the physical body is still strongly the main form of the Pokemon, the ghost type just informs its state of being. Which leaves the mushrooms out to dry in terms of characterizing through typing, but I really do think keeping the Bug typing in is important. Grass/Ghost just seems like a more spectral kind of thing anyway, like those Gen 6 pokemon, but Parasect is corporeal.
You should’ve given it signal beam for sure. Some of the mushrooms that zombify bugs appeal to birds to come eat the host by signaling to them with the hosts eye stalks.
I love all your videos - its really clear how much effort you put in to make each pokemon viable in-game while still trying to keep their design origins in mind vs simply just buffing all their stats or giving them OP moves as an easy solution! Keep up the good work! Also if you're taking suggestions, I would like to see how you fix Skitty in Gen 3. It's adorable, but using it in-game is a chore.
The idea of Parasect being a Bug/Ghost type is a super novel idea that I hadn't thought of before but makes way too much sense in practice. Really fun video
Hell yeah. Ive been checking your channel daily for like a week now lmao. Had a feeling we were close to an upload. Looks to be a banger as always, youve dug out an awesome niche for just yourself and I think it purely comes down to the presentation style you have. I bet it wont be long until other larger content creators start emulating these videos.
I can really appreciate the narratives you provide for the playthroughs, it really makes the runs come alive. For Pokemon like Parasect, I have never even read their dex entries before, and I really love how you take all of this to heart. I would definitely pay full price for having these games completely re-imagined by you!
I really like this concept and all of your ideas! One thing I'd like to give contructive criticism on: When you narrate battles its sometimes confusing when youre several seconds ahead of whats happening on screen. Maybe you could speed the battles up/slow them down to match them to your explanation. Keep up the good work!
Hell yeah, was hoping you'd choose Bug/Ghost from the moment I clicked on this video. As for abilities, I'd say Insomnia is more appropriate. The fungus doesn't care if the host is asleep; it's basically dead anyway, yet it keeps moving it.
Love these vids! If you’re taking suggestions I’d love to see how you would fix Delibird. Kind of a weird gimmick Pokémon but Ice is such an interesting type in general and I’ve always wanted to find reason to use it
Since it is a santa bird, I imagine a sort of supportive movepool with some ice and flying coverage would work. Assuming we are using gen 4, this means moves such as fling, natural gift, recycle, along with various weird moves and staple moves like roost. Mainly anything with bomb in the name or anything that can be pictured as coming out of the sac like spikes because it desperately needs literally anything to help it. Even if we gave the sad boy some thing stupid like stealth rock or dark void, or no guard sheer cold it would probably still be mediocre since its defenses and speed are abhorrent and literally comparable to first stage Pokémon (its defense and speed are somehow worse than magikarp for reference). If the thing in front of it can outspeed it and kill it, it’s practically dead, and that’s alot of things that are built for that even in the story mode.
I think it might also work if Parasect's typing was changed to Grass/Ghost. It's true that Mushrooms aren't Plants, but the Grass-type is a kind of "substitute" for Mushrooms (Breloom, Amoonguss, Shiinotic, and Toedscruel, which are Mushrooms, are all Grass-types as well). Whereas, if Paras' insect body is no longer alive, changing the Bug-type to Ghost, instead of the Grass, still makes sense, at least to me. Of course, currently, Bug/Ghost (Shedinja) is less used than Grass/Ghost (Trevenant, Gourgeist, Decidueye, Dhelmise, and Brambleghast), but in FRLG, both would be unique type combos. However, Grass being special while Bug is physical is still a big problem this generation.
I definitely see Grass/Ghost as being more along the lines of something like Trevenant, and Parasect doesn’t really fit that feeling to me. Yeah the bug’s dead, but it’s a zombie, not just a spirit, so I feel like keeping the bug typing to represent its corporeal form is important.
Eh. I’d say that 70 is still pretty slow. It’s certainly the slowest electric type in Kanto by a wide margin (every other fully evolved one has at least base 100 speed). Base 70 puts it below Nidoqueen, Beedrill, Hitmonchan and every Kanto starter while it only matches Dewgong, Skarmory, Poliwrath and Victreebel. It’s even slow enough that Magnezone doesn’t really mind it dropping further.
This is such an amazing Parasect fix that I absolutely wish it was canon, you even gave the lil thing Dream Eater and Pain Split for more survivability! This is so cool! I think that I would still be in favour of keeping Leech Seed, the draining moves and maybe Shadow Ball for thematic reasons, and I could see Shadow Sneak working better than Shadow Punch for Parasect. But I would move Leech Seed towards the late game (like maybe after Pain Split) to stop it from being so much of a crutch in the rest of the game. Parasect is such an awesome 'mon either way though, and actually makes use of Ghost types being physical
I think a great Pokemon to make a video on would be Klink. A steel type who's moveset is full of special electric moves, while getting shift gear to boost attack, it's signature move is gear grind, and it's ability is MINUS? I would love to see a Klink video
These videos make me consider some weaker pokemon and start to see past their bad stats and movesets and really get to appreciate the design and potential these pokemon have, keep up the good work dude!
Thanks :) it’d be boring if every Pokémon was built as the typical offensive sweeper. Nice to mix in some more interesting strategies here, even if it’s not “optimal”
This is so satisfying. Parasect did so well! To the point where I am now sad that I can't use this iteration of it on my team. If the next video is a pokemon from Hoenn.. I have to presume it is Poochyena/Mightyena
My philosophy for improving pokemon is to lean harder into their design inspirations. Ex, giving hypjo an ability Buffing sleep moves accuracy cuz hypnosis, dream eater, and nightmare are basically his whole deal. That mindset shows through here! Parasect is the zombie shroom mon, so really leaning into both the shroom and the fact that its dead was a great choice!
Imo leech seed is a awesome fit for parasect's theme. The mushroom is a parasite draining the host life, so if you just pretend that it's "leech spores" and not actual seeds, its just perfect
I was wondering if you’d cover Paras and Parasect. Though, while I agree that Fungi aren’t plants, with Pokémon’s logic I feel Grass/Ghost would be more fitting for Parasect. But otherwise this was very fun to see the shrooms do well.
These videos are really fun and imaginative. Your reworks fit the Pokemon much better than the official Game Freak versions. Keep it up! Also, my guess for the next video: Surskit & Masquerain! I really hope you make a video on them and keep Masquerain as a Bug/Water type.
Now that makes me wonder whether Dartrix, Crocalor, or Snorunt die when they evolve into their Ghost-type evos as well. (I'd argue in the case of the Ghost starters its more so they're now honing spiritual ghost powers akin to say Danny Phantom rather than literally dying)
Parasect is a grass type because Pokemon routinely classifies mushrooms as grass types. Breloom line, Shiinotic line, Amoongus line, etc. Always grass. Since we don't have a Fungus type, grass is just the best fit. Kind of like how lava and magma based pokemon like Slugma are fire type, even though magma is molten rock, not actually fire. Sometimes types have to just settle for being close enough, so I think Bug/Grass fits better than Bug/Ghost. Anyway, I just got thru a Leaf Green playthru where I used Parasect, and I really don't think it needed fixing. Its 4x weaknesses were rarely a factor, as flying and fire trainers are fairly uncommon, and usually use weak moves. Its attack stat and bulk are enough to keep it viable through most of the game. It doesn't really fall off until the Pokemon League. If Parasect needs anything, it's a strong stab Bug Type move. If X-Scissor existed at the time, Parasect would have been fine. Weakness to poison hurts it, but since it has access to dig (and aerial ace for Grass/Poison), and its attack is fairly high, it has an answer to most poison types. Even though it's slow, it surprisingly outspeeds a majority of in-game trainers anyway, and even when it doesn't, it has enough bulk to survive and hit with Spore.
I think Dream Eater fits because if you are losing to a Parasect, you should probably give up on your dream of becoming a pokémon champion
damn
Gonna need a full restore for that one
You have seriously found an amazing niche in the Pokémon TH-cam world, please keep up the awesome work!
Hopefully he blows up before it becomes a trend!
For real I absolutely adore his work in a sea of uninspired content and was devastated when he I realised he only had a couple of videos. Your production quality and skill are crazy good
Definitely. I subbed immediately when the first video dropped and I get audibly excited about the next video.
couldn’t agree more
Couldn't have said it better myself!
Second for kricketot
I feel like all most the early game bugs need one but like especially spidops and many leavany
I need a kricketot fix, i used it last Week and it was a horror movie using it
This Parasect would prob (in my limited knowledge) be really good in gen 3 NU. It can wall the Normals (Raticate and Vigoroth), beat Chimeco, and be generally useful with its bulk and access to Spore. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised if it has a niche in gen 3 UU since it can switch into Kangaskhan and threaten Lunatone.
I don't think that kricketot needs buffs because it's an early game bug
Heavily appreciate hearing "this line is based" in the first 18 seconds of a Paras video
Excited to see where this goes
- This line is based :)
- Based? Based on what?
- Based on something _really_ creepy. o_o
The way you leaned into the lore for this one is so incredibly cool. A haunted husk of a bug draining the life energy out of opponents after the spores that killed it have lulled them to sleep feels exactly like the way that Parasect should play to start with.
I didn’t want to sleep tonight anyway
“Oh Paras, stop dying. You’re so quirky XD” has to be my favorite line of this series so far
I feel like it's one of those things that only come to you in hindsight, but I always felt like the paras line should have been a bug-ghost type
That doesn’t make sense because Parasect is mostly/already dead, it should be either Grass/Psychic or Grass/Ghost referencing mind control or possessing its corpse.
Someone get Gamefreak on the horn and tell them to give Parasect a bug/ghost evolution.
@Matheus Demello how doesn't that make any sense? It's a bug being taken over by a fungus/parasite, a bug is not a plant, and a fungus/mushroom isn't a plant either, bug/ghost makes sense
I mean sure, you can make the argument for it's first form, but I think our guy made the right choice making paras a grass/bug type and parasect a bug/ghost type
@@gigastrike2
Doesn’t make sense?
Ghost/Grass is better because the *BUG* is *DEAD* the mushroom is in control and there are other mushroom Pokémon that are mushroom.
@@matheusdemello2323 Hello
About mushrooms not being a good fit for grass types, GameFreak has the nasty habit of lumping fungi into the grass typing, even with later gens. Gen III has the Shroomish line, Gen V has the Foongus line, and Gen VII has Morelull and Shiinotic. I think GameFreak sees the grass typing more as something they can lump nature related and soil-growing creatures in, instead of a purely plant specific typing. The Bug type also has this problem where crabs, spiders and other arthropods are lumped together in one group, though it makes a little bit more sense than fungi being grass type.
For Bug it makes sense, things like Clawitzer honestly should have been Water/Bug.
Now for snails like Accelgor on the other hand…
😊😊
Lp 😊.😊,
At first i kept thinking "wouldn't this be better it you just did it in a later generation?" But then you addressed that with the idea that doing stuff in FRLG is like camping/roughing it, which I found to be a very charming comparison.
Great vid!
@@ZenModeYT but this one is weird ngl. Foongus is a mushroom and is a Grass-type. Also Breloom is Grass/Fighting.
@@blazechaos212 you are assuming that they are staying that way in zenmode's ideal pokemon game
@@hi-i-am-atan I'm not assuming. I'm going off with the details he shared in the vid
38:39 I think it wouldve been interesting if you gave agatha a parasect too, both because its ghost and to see how your modified pokemon work against you
I second this!!! Agatha has ghost parasect vibes. It'd go great on her team
Great job as always!
i think cinderace should learn all ball moves tbh
Clawitzer getting it makes sense, like it's shooting a ghost cannonball from its claw
It makes sense for Snorlax as well as it's known for Hyper Beams
The signature move in question is Zombifying spores: “the User scatters its spores to force the opposing Pokémon into a zombified state”
Base Power --
Catagory: Status
Type: Ghost
Targeting: Single-Target, Adjacent.
Is effected by the same abilities spore is
Effects: the Pokémon hit by Zombifying spores will be given the zombie status which to put it simply it will be put to sleep for 2-5 turns and take 1/8 of its health in damage for every turn its asleep, wearing off when the Pokémon wakes up. To ensure it won’t outclass spore it’s PP will be maximum of 5 (8 with max pp ups) and it will only be learned when Parasect reaches level 62.
The second one is Siphon Soul: “the User uses a hand or Claw-like appendage to drain the opponents life force”
Base Power: 85
Catagory: Physical
Type: Ghost
Targeting: Single Target
Abilities it interacts with: Rough Skin, Iron Barbs, Liquid Ooze,.
Contact? Yes
Bonus Effects: Heals the user for half the damage dealt, Base Power increased by 1.3x and healing increased to 75% of the damage dealt if the user has less Hp than the opponent.
Examples of Pokémon that would learn it including but not limited to:
Parasect (Hence why I mentioned it)
Banette
Duskinoir
Driftblim
Mimikyu
Spore + Dream Eater is an insane combo I have always wanted to see
Move over Darkrai
Shiinotic can actually pull that combo in the official games. Mina uses it in pretty much every fight.
It's crazy that you became one of the TH-camrs where I audibly go "oh!" Whenever i see you upload and you didn't disappoint, keep up the good work!
this series you make is fuckin excellent dude. it really shows how much you care about making a pokemon special for an average player. you almost create personalities, that no doubt the devs had intended, but sometimes didn't realize. as if you're making rpg characters that have some variability of story and character depending on their party members and the player's intentions.
im happy this doesn't go too far into "making x op" or "min maxing" pokemon, but rather making the fantasy become more alive.
one thing i think you may want to consider is translation. for moves and for the pokemon's name. the fantasy of pokemon tries to be consistent among translations, but that may not hold true. or maybe the translations unearth some aspect to a pokemon you didn't consider. especially in regards to movepool as the translation from japanese to english or japanese to any other language might really change what the intended purpose of a move or pokemon may have been.
go off man, talk yo shit
Hoping for Skitty/Delcatty next time. Love to see what kinds of changes you'd make for them!
Based on what he said at the end of the video, you might’ve just guessed it.
Surskit is my guess
Parasect: "Can you feel your heart burning? Can you feel the struggle within? The fear within me is beyond anything your soul can make. You cannot kill me in a way that matters."
I think aromatherapy makes sense design wise, as a lot of medicines and antibiotics comes from fungi
I think they removed aromatherapy from SV so I was fine with him removing it in this video
"What are you going to do with your time machine?"
"Game Freak made a mistake that I need to fix."
I think it would honestly be fine to give it shadow ball over shadow punch because most pokemon gain some kind of elemental power from their type (why else would decidueye learn Poltergeist when it's just an owl?) and it's really common for pokemon with low BSTs to get strong moves early to compensate
was really upset you'd be changing the typing, then heard "bug/ghost" and immediately changed my mind. bravo
as a fellow paras enjoyer, I applaud you.
and I thought you were just doing theory, but seeing you actually use the changes
was really cool.
A thick, shimmering cloud of toxic dust
Silver Wind also has a chance to Omni-Boost, like mushrooms using their mycelium to connect to each other and share nutrients.
I love that you did Paras, it and Parasect are my favorite little guys
Honestly I would love to see you develop you’re own rom/roms of different games as you take on new projects. Love you’re work and keep it up!
I agree that he could work a bit on video editing, specifically synching up the commentary with the footage.
I was a bit confused by it at first but then I realized that it was done so he could narrate at his own pace while showing the entire fight (sped up) on screen. Rather than having to constrict the length of narration against each individual opponent Pokemon to the amount of time it was on screen, which varies and is often quite short
Bug/Ghost Parasect my beloved (*furiously takes notes for my fanmade Parasect evo*)
I think this one's your best video yet, honestly.
Do you want to make the team plasma battles even more annoying, and Lenora’s Watchog even more terrifying?!
@@emblemblade9245 Yes. Very.
Left earbud users are loving that Paras cry
Honestly Parasect should get another evolution like Primeape and Bisharp got. That way it can also get a useable base stat total. This would be preferable to getting a regional variant.
I absolutely love these videos so much, this kind of design thinking speaks directly to me and I can’t wait to see this series grow!
I had a couple of unsolicited thoughts that might be interesting suggestions:
-I know in your Chikorita video you said you would be straying away from editing base stats.
I watched all 4 of your videos multiple times now and I can’t wait to see what you do next:)
here in my country we all pokémon fans have a deep love for paras
so I whole heartedly want to thank you for this video
Even in Legends Arceus?
I've genuinely never thought of Paras as the wrong type but it really does change things up! Awesome video.
I would argue for the use of signal beam with its creepy eyes and silver wind as it shakes the mushroom
Upon reflection, paras should probably be pure bug. I do like the idea of the grass type being a bait and switch for the ghost typing though.
Don't we have enough Ghost/Grasses already? Treavenant, Gourgeist, Dhelmise, Decidueye, the new desert thorn from Paldea...
Paras: *hatches*
mushrooms: "your life ends 23 levels from now"
I have a good feeling that it _is_ Skitty, since he said he'll be covering "a Pokemon even weaker than Paras[ect], as we take a lap through the Hoenn region" and the only fully evolved Pokemon with less BST than Parasect's 405 are:
Dustox, Beautifly (unlikely that he'd cover two bugs in a row),
Shedinja (previous point, plus Shedinja is actually pretty good),
Nosepass (got an evolution in Gen 4, so I doubt he'd try to fix something that is already fixed),
Mawile, Sableye (as bad as they are, they're still pretty usable, although I speak from personal experiences that they fall off _hard_ in the lategame),
Plusle, Minun (they have _exactly_ 405 BST)
Volbeat, Illumise (they got a stat buff in Gen 6)
Luvdisc (don't even bother fixing that one; it's found way too late)
Spinda (actually a pretty likely choice too, now that I think about it)
Delcatty (notoriously underwhelming, probably mostly intended to be used in Contests and not in battles)
And yes, Masquerain has higher stats than Parasect.
I'd probably give it drought and access to flamethrower
Edit: or give it flash fire and sunny day (which I think it already gets)
I love the Paras line. That typing is so abysmal though. Lately I’ve had this fixation on ‘mediocre’ pokemon from earlier gens. Ekans especially. Like, in fire red, the poisonous rattlesnake then cobra can’t even learn poison fang on it’s own without breeding? What gives? Would love to see your take on the big purple snake.
6:04 it's 80 not 70. Also Spore is no longer the signature move of Paras and Parasect in gen 3.
Turns out that spore is straight cracked. If you're learning it at 24 when you evolve, maybe consider reducing the PP of it. Also means you have a good target for PP ups/Max over time.
I'm also shocked that he didn't need any stat buffs and the type change alone was perfect.
This is such a great series and is inspiring me into getting back into a passion project that I had a few years back somewhat similar to this, love your stuff bro, keep it up!
onix is such a great fighting type, it's in the top 10 fighting types of gen 1 for sure.
I agree. In later games Parasect gets Energy Ball so Shadow Ball isn't out of reach.
I never expected that perfection in terms of buffing that mon.
I feel like the Paras line is a good example of how Bug works better as a monster family as opposed to an actual element.
If you're grass-like, it's good enough.)
But it grew on me as I kept watching. Particularly since the Paras line is likely based off cicadas, much like the Shedinja line, so being Bug/Ghost is oddly fitting
_"But it grew on me"_
🍄💀
@@emblemblade9245 That same reasoning works the other way around. Parasect is certainly a Pokemon that _would_ have three types of it could.
You should’ve given it signal beam for sure. Some of the mushrooms that zombify bugs appeal to birds to come eat the host by signaling to them with the hosts eye stalks.
What
the
fuck o_o
I love all your videos - its really clear how much effort you put in to make each pokemon viable in-game while still trying to keep their design origins in mind vs simply just buffing all their stats or giving them OP moves as an easy solution! Keep up the good work!
Also if you're taking suggestions, I would like to see how you fix Skitty in Gen 3. It's adorable, but using it in-game is a chore.
If only Parasect was originally Bug/Ghost, we would have more than one Ghost line in gen 1. Maybe even some interesting moves to add.
One of the things I loved about Let's Go was the candy system. I could actually make use of pokemon like Parasect and Onix by doping them lol
So bland with mediocre jokes? Poketubers got that covered plenty
Idk why a ghost parasect can’t learn shadow ball because it’s not paranormal when jigglypuff, rattatta, and eevee (literal normal types) can learn it.
Never clicked so fast when I saw my best friend paras
Same
I can really appreciate the narratives you provide for the playthroughs, it really makes the runs come alive. For Pokemon like Parasect, I have never even read their dex entries before, and I really love how you take all of this to heart.
I would definitely pay full price for having these games completely re-imagined by you!
I really like this concept and all of your ideas!
One thing I'd like to give contructive criticism on:
When you narrate battles its sometimes confusing when youre several seconds ahead of whats happening on screen.
Uploaded at the perfect time for me to watch with my food. Another great video. Would love to see how you would fix Beedrill and Sudowoodo.
Making Parasect Bug/Ghost is so genius it has me legitimately thinking "NINTENDO HIRE THIS MAN"
Love these vids!
There's way too many Grass/Ghosts right now in my opinion. I don't want more of them >_
I definitely see Grass/Ghost as being more along the lines of something like Trevenant, and Parasect doesn’t really fit that feeling to me. Yeah the bug’s dead, but it’s a zombie, not just a spirit, so I feel like keeping the bug typing to represent its corporeal form is important.
Thank you for the intro, now I’m going to have nightmares
Also Magneton is not slow at all, that’s Magnezone
11:38 the mic quality jumpscare
Yeah had to go back and re-record a couple lines 😅 still getting the hang of audio recording but it’s an improvement over last video :)
@@yorecf9641 Isn’t Magneton base 80?
EDIT: Double-checked, apparently not. Huh.
The Shinx line is definitely a species in need of a stat rework or type change, but better moves overall would be something at least.
I think Ingrain could’ve been a good move for Paras/Parasect, since that’s what the fungi are doing to it.
I mean the entire point of this mushroom type is that it's not stationary thanks to its host
@@appelofdoom8211 it’s not like ingrain is a permanent thing but sure! I get what you mean
1-Down was an absolute beast
Some people like to joke that exposing Snorunt to a Dawn Stone is just melting it to death
Isnt snorunt based on decapitated head? It should've been ice ghost from the beginning lol
