The price is way over the top no matter what. Even the cool factor is lost when>80% of the enemies are "dog" or "rat" or "generic soldier". I know they're holding on to milk everything they can from the fans of the game, but this is ridiculous. Getting to Godrick as the core pledge was the minimum for me, even if it meant that "bat #3" had to be a cardboard token instead of a dedicated miniature.
Totally agree! I have never backed anything but this game would have me.. But the price? Gosh ... core pledge would be minimum for me too.. but at least have that fakin Godrick there :D
As for why the game isn't doing that well as opposed to what people thought, well its vid game opposed to board game. I have vid game only friends that love the Ip, and even they were going to get this, and then they saw the prices, and it shocked them. Mainly that your not even getting all of the Elden Ring game for the 400$ price point. I had to explain to them, that the prices were around the normal for what you getting, and now they think I am insane for even buying board games lol.
I was one of the 40000 followers. But when I saw the style of gameplay felt it wasn't worth dropping (for me AUD$700). For that kind of money, the game needs to be perfect.
Great content Alex. I do like these "Should You Back" videos. Even if I don't really agree this is a good back. I have been following this campaign really closely every day. I REALLY wanted to back this campaign. I love the IP. I thought it would be an auto-back. But it being "Limgrave only", and the All-in having so much redundant components. +2,500 cards (Do they need that many?!). Then finally the gameplay ... didn't seem exciting. Explore is a no pressure 1 hour affair. Combat seemed like you are grinding out the Boss for an hour. My enthusiasm has just all collapsed ... :( I'm a little sad. I've been trying to convince myself otherwise every day. I may still drop a dollar on the pledge to have the "out" of backing later - but it seems nearly impossible. What I wanted - A higher percentage of the video game in the base box. No stand alone expansions on release. A shorter campaign time that resets ever say 5 to 10 sessions. None of this 90+ hours ... geez. Thats going to be a NIGHTMARE to balance! Or your levelling experience will be glacial. Both seem very unappealing.
I want the minis in this case and see the game as a bonus. Can't wait to drop a dark souls model on the table to show a D&D group their about to have a TPK 😈!
@@marshall4311 Dunno, the track record of SFG is also a good reason to back. They deliver and are an upstanding company. SFG helping Euthia was awesome. Popularity is not a good indicator for if I will like something usually and BGG rating is at least partially a popularity contest. Bardsung is mixed but lands at a 7.7. Pretty good for a grindy level up and pummel enemies game IMO. So I partially agree if you only want the best critically acclaimed design SFG is not the company for you but if SFG aligns with your tastes and you want something good that will improve and has options for expansions beyond what you'll probably ever play SFG is for you.
This is a hard one. Elden Ring the video game is Game of the Year for me. I almost want to buy the board game just for those minis, the look incredible. Unfortunately this seems like a good board game at a price point that would require I absolutely am head over heals in love with it to justify. Especially when I just backed Tainted Grail and Oathsworn, and my game group has Frosthaven on the way.
Regardless of value (the amount of content provided), cool miniatures (though personally I find them a tad stiff), or the mechanics; the biggest issue I see is the daunting knowledge of this being 5-6 seasons. That means this game will end up being 2k-3k range. Yes, Elden Ring is a huge World and game but knowing how this is being spread out along with its total pricing. Plus backers have no incentive to back now, then to wait for the community to review this game and wait until season 2 to back everything. For most that will be the safer choice to make.
@@dannyf1168 100% with u. And the Miniatures are extremly boring tbh, sure Elden ring has cool characters and bosses but even in the 400 € Version there are almost none. Just bland bosses, im sure there will be cool bosses like radahn down the line but then im already 1000 bucks deep in addons and stuff 😂 when Malenia + Haligtree releases the game will be like 3k 😅 and the gameplay is also kinda bland.. the game is just riding the ip hype
This makes a lot of sense, and the more reason for backers to hold off. As we will most likely receive update packs to improve mechanics as well. Regarding the minis, cool design but stiff sculpts. The main issue are the static poses since the base was flat. If they planned sculpted bases from the get go, the poses will be significantly more dynamic and lively
Obviously as I have no attachment to the video game, I was not going to back it. But there's more going on that I think are red flags. Video game IPs tend to struggle when ported to a board game. There are a few standouts (Mechs v Minions, Slay the Spire, etc.) But the majority struggle to make a game that feels satisfying and "right" for the IP. It seems far easier to make a video game based on a board game than vice versa. These types of games tend to struggle when ported to board gaming. The tough-as-nails, open world, grind-to-get-better, 3d, combat-focused Souls borne game with immense lore and spectacle is so hard to get right. Even Dark souls the board game struggled with this. Trying to emulate that grinding to get better made the game feel frustrating, boring and unsatisfying. Grinding in a board game is generally not fun, especially when you drag along 3 of your friends to do it too. The world has changed since Dark Souls the board game. Inflation, shipping issues and time delays have generally made people more cautious about game purchases. For a game this expensive and big, it causes concern. SFG has a really rocky track record. Amazing minis, but few of the games are actually well reviewed. It's another campaign game that'll get played a couple times, and then sit on a shelf until you take it out to admire the minis. It'll probably be kinda fiddly, over wrought, and feel somewhat unsatisfying. And for that purpose, it takes up a lot of space on the shelf. I'm happy that those people that wanted this can have it. I just struggle to justify it, even if I had connection to the IP. And it's a pretty safe bet that you'd be able to get your money back and potentially extra.
For anyone worried that combat when fighting the same enemies will be always the same and become boring and repetitive , this is the reply I got from devs about this combat concern: Hey Beri. I'm pleased to say that just about anyone that has played the game has massively enjoyed the combat system, which is encouraging. In terms of variability, you can expect that enemies will have varied behavior over time; also battlefield grids and stance benefits change. You'll also see different starting positions and types of enemy mixes, and varied objectives for encounters, as well as terrain types. All said, there are a lot of elements we can adjust to keep things interesting, don't worry.
Has anyone done a mini per dollar ratio on this game? This use to be a big thing. Nobody seems to mention it much these days. The Entry level pledge is 20 minis for $100. Bloodborne (my favourite game) is 37 minis for $100. Zombicide Marvel was say $150 (with shipping) for 87 minis? I get not all minis are created equal. But if the Minis are a big selling point its something to consider. SF games seem to have less stuff for your dollar generally.
If you think Elden Ring, you think Radahn. You think Malenia. You think Ranni the witch. You don't think "The tutorial area", which is even missing stuff like the night cavalry. A lot of people bounced off immediately the moment it was clear that the game was carved up to be the least interesting zone only. Paying 2k+ for the full thing spread across several years is just a very hard sell in my opinion, and I am really unsure what they would even cram into "90 hours" of gameplay with these areas. There isn't very much in them.
Compare to Aeon Trespass Odyssey: -I get three different areas out of the box, which are not just randomly generated, but actually designed, varied in tone and apparently mechanics. -I get less minis, but the minis are more varied, not just 6 rats or 2x the same character -I get a similar card count, but with a very engaging combat system that just works very well and keeps changing -The story of each area is also different and quite varied I don't want to keep harping on "only the tutorial area" but it really needs to be repeated. Limgrave and the similar Weeping Island have comparatively low variety, and the tiles themselves even reduce the apparent variability due to their look. In most expensive explory boardgames (think 7th Continent, Tainted Grail, or Aeon Trespass), what you explore changes quite a bit. It's not just one same identical zone. You have biomes with varied mechanics and hazards. I feel that they really shot themselves in the foot with the zone carving they did.
I've been playing Aeon Trespass Odyssey for the past 2 days. If KIngdom Forlorn is half as good as ATO, it will bury Elden Ring / Dark Souls. The main problems with ER : TBG for me are : - Ring quest books - Time limited quests - No spatial combat - No dice with a card based combat that looks weak. After tasting ATO's combat system, i'll be very very critical of combat in other games... - Overall art (excluding hex tiles) is not Elden Ring - Dungeons are virtualized in the quest books instead of being dungeon tiles with a real sense of exploring a dungeon with dungeon's Elden Ring Art... If it were half the game maybe, but what you get looks like 20% or less of the content from video game. Might be worth core if it included the entry one too
I just don’t understand the timing of this campaign. Like I spent over 1,000 on black friday(thanks KDM) now we got Christmas, and knowing that they’ll sell it on their site. I just don’t really see a reason to back.
Based on what little experience you may have with this game, how would you say this compares with Primal the awakening? If you were forced to only pick one which would it be?
I actually dropped my pledge because I saw that the combat was on separate quest books as opposed to tiles or a board. The intention is to have different art for different locations your in, however the art looks very bland in these quest books to really matter. They could have simply had 1 board for normal battles, and another for the boss battles. I didn't like Jaws of the Lion because the pages were thin, and they broke in the book when we were playing, but they still had fantastic unique art for each different dungeon. Ultimately I was drawn in by the Ip and the Minis, but I realized I didn't really need this.
The exclusives will hold their value on the secondary market IF SFG don't decide to make the expansion non exclusive after fact and sell it for 80 on their webstore once enough new customers show up requesting it. Refer to Bardsung Fables expansion.
Price is the biggest factor. It's insanely expensive and "making" you pay £170+ for the core pledge to get stretch goals is just mean on their part. The £75 Entry pledge is so basic and I'm not shocked only 457 people have backed at this level. Not to mention duplication of player miniatures in the boxes. Given my previous experience with Dark Souls (glad I pulled out) and Horizon (went all in and sold it as it felt terrible to play for me and I'd much rather just play the video game). This is not for me and I won't be backing.
I’ll be dropping my $1 pledge. I don’t want to be tempted to get this later. The whole thing looks lack luster. Also who the hell wants to play 90 hours just to fight Margit? That sounds incredibly boring.
I commented in the other video but i'll do it here too, tell what you want about gameplay, card count etc but Miniatures sells games. If elden Ring had more minis, NPC invasor minis, spirit Ashes summon minis, alternate tarnished minis, etc, the game would be doing much better in terms of $. They are cheaping out in the mini departament.
Never played the video game, so I was less inclined to back, but saw the price point and noped right out. I'm being more and more picky on these big Kickstarters. I just can't justify the $, the space it will take up, and the time involved to play it. I have 4 $1 pledges for recent big games because I wanted more time away from the FOMO to make a decision.
I have my issues with CMON, but if this was a CMON game I almost certainly would have been duped into an All-In. Steamforged? Eh.. No thanks. Scarred by their Dark Souls game. Please give From Software games directly to CMON from now on.
Every time Alex proclaims it as the best SFG game he's played so far I can't help the feeling that it just sounds like he's at the local McDonalds saying they've just served him the best cheeseburger he ever got from them... like okay but most of us really just kind of are only going to praise a burger when it's worth the price, at a gourmet place. I really think he's being blinded by all the marketing SFG has been doing on him this time. Please don't forget that liking someone does not make them competent at what they do, Alex.
The combat is definitely pulling me in more than exploration for sure. Does the exploration phase leave you a feeling to be desired in its simplicity? (Even though you’re only 2hrs in)
Me too I love the combat and how it uses the format from the video game, that you need to learn enemy moving and attack patterns in order to kill it, yet combat is fast and easily resolved ... it does not drag and turn into snooze fest for the other players like in some games ... because other people do not wait for your combat to end ...
The combat looks a little samey to me. The enemy has one attack card that it plays over and over. So they just do one thing every round forever. There’s no surprise about what the next round of combat will be. it’s just about whether they go before you or after. That level of predictability feels like it could get old quickly.
@@Berndr different enemies they will have different behaviour. But the same enemy in the same fight it has one attack pattern for that match. I guess for the first few times I kill a guard I'll be 'oh what should I do'. But by the 4th time I've engaged the enemy I'll go - oh they tend to move like this and attack like this - I should just always do this every single time I play against them. The battle system does look as though it will become a very predictable affair.
After looking at the elden ring board game, I actually just bought the dark souls board game after research. Idk it seems fun (my friends and I are new to these type of games) excited for that and might get expansions! (Amazon)
Wow, SFG always used to have a lot and great SGs, but this is rather weak, especially for an expensive game of this scope and with this kind of funding. And arbitrarily valueing it at 100 $ is a joke, plain and simple. Not a funny one, that is.. The "Should you back it?" for me is a clear and loud "Nope!".
I went for the 89$ pledge , interesting enough that I want to back the game but not pay a big investment , now if the game is great then there is obvious room to build on. That being said I think there is some bitterness of those who backed the DS board game and felt they got burned. So if you are in that position is is one of the things you have to ask yourself do you want to give sfg another chance or are you off sfg forever ? I’d say either position is fine though I would urge judge the elden ring board game on the game play not on sfg past shortcomings. If the game looks interesting enough to back then back it , if not then take a pass.
A "good" game is the key. For 400 dollars, I would expect a "great" or an "amazing" game! Elden Ring vs Elder Scrolls. I have a feeling that Ring is gonna beat Scrolls over art, but Scrolls is going to beat Ring over content depth.
Basically will never back a SFG title until they string together a few great games. The price is just outlandish for a publisher with such a bad track record. Plus gameplay looks boring.
From my personal experience anything you back on Kickstarter is fantastic value ... I learned that the hard way when not backing Euthia and The great wall ... then decided I really want it ... had to pay literally triple the price on Ebay of what I would have paid on Kickstarter :(... even if you do not like it ,you can always sell Kickstarter game
@@DarkHedx I know but I missed the first Kickstarter and 2nd re- print with the expansion I did back, but it was canceled because apparently, they did not get enough backers even though they reached the requested goal ... and it seemed at the time that we would never ever get another print, as result copies on eBay started literally selling out so fast that you could not even find one to buy ... So when I did finally find one, I instantly bought it thinking that was my last chance to get it , and then as a joke 2 months later they reopened Kickstarter after I already spent triple lol / and yeah I did back this time the expansion ... Regarding the Great wall, I, unfortunately, missed both times the pledge ... whilst people still are selling the core game on eBay, to save my life I can't find the Black powder miniature expansion... been looking for it ever since... and I have doubt I ever will because none seem to be selling it separately! the only black powder copy I found is from the guy in Australia who is selling it for as part of dragon pledge for 800 Dollars, and I cant afford that :(
Yes, it is a fantastic exploration game, with exciting character development, and has lots of scenarios ... Combat is the only thing that is on the snooze side due to being too complex and too long in my opinion for a board game format ... but again lots of solo players seem to love it ... but if you play with 4 people ... 4th person literally can take a nap till his turn comes ... because of that My group has redesigned the whole combat system to be fast and efficient and in my opinion, made the game even better and more fluid We also play only one action token per player to keep the game moving rather than having a player play all 3 actions on his turn ... and 4th player nap till his turn comes ... Euthia is a great game but turns per player as well as combat we found long ... once we fixed that with our house rules it is an amazing experience!
I'll pass on this one. Seems like a repetitive giant that will just bore you to death after a couple of hours. It seems miniatures and tons of cards and paper are there to give you the feeling you are getting something for your money. You aren't. What you're getting is paper and plastic for the price of gold.
this is too pricey for what we get and they will pump the shit out of it with lots of other expansions for each zones ... its a cash grab on the franchise

Totally understand
I'll be waiting for chip theory game elder across game this spring. I'm not paying 509 dollars for 30 percent of elden ring to deliver in 2 years
SFG has not designed any great games, they are mediocre at best. Not going to back this one and too many will back because of FOMO and IP.
To provide an alternative perspective, I found Bardsung to be fantastic, and the gap between good and great is often quite literally the theme.
125 instead of 179 for the core pledge and i would back this.
@@dannyf1168 from what I understand is every single enemy has a different pattern of attacks, you would need to learn
@@dannyf1168 yeah repeating the same enemies over and over ... that does make sense! did anyone address that in question with devs????
Great point about holding value. Dark Souls was a bad game but it resold for MSRP. If Elden Ring is a good game, that makes it more likely.
After looking at the elden ring board game, I actually just bought the dark souls board game after research. Idk it seems fun (my friends and I are new to these type of games) excited for that and might get expansions! (Amazon)
Wanted to back it but they don't deliver to my country
I'm super confused how this is a boss batteler when the only boss in the core is godric? You just keep fighting him again and again?
Wow, SFG always used to have a lot and great SGs, but this is rather weak, especially for an expensive game of this scope and with this kind of funding. And arbitrarily valueing it at 100 $ is a joke, plain and simple. Not a funny one, that is.. The "Should you back it?" for me is a clear and loud "Nope!".
Ya, it will be worth more than that but I understand
I went for the 89$ pledge , interesting enough that I want to back the game but not pay a big investment , now if the game is great then there is obvious room to build on. That being said I think there is some bitterness of those who backed the DS board game and felt they got burned. So if you are in that position is is one of the things you have to ask yourself do you want to give sfg another chance or are you off sfg forever ? I’d say either position is fine though I would urge judge the elden ring board game on the game play not on sfg past shortcomings. If the game looks interesting enough to back then back it , if not then take a pass.
Grafted bases would have been better then textured bases and fit the theme better 😈.
Matchbox 20 The Board Game preview?
But wat if i am Bob?
Ty for the video!
Cast your vote: elden ring all in or to buy right now retail stuff of Too many bones?
TMB
I’d buy Bloodborne. Base game costs the same as the entry pledge - it has double the content, 5 times the bosses. Available now. A better game.
Damn i struggle so hard :D i love the ip and fomo hits hard, but the gameplay? mehhh hmmmm >_>
I bet if you skip, in 1 week when the campaign is over, you will be glad.
@@mikeysboardroom I guess im rather gonna buy a 3d printer and print cool minis for Malenia and Radahn :D
A "good" game is the key.
For 400 dollars, I would expect a "great" or an "amazing" game!
Elden Ring vs Elder Scrolls.
I have a feeling that Ring is gonna beat Scrolls over art, but Scrolls is going to beat Ring over content depth.
Now that both Kickstarters have finished, what's your opinion on the two games?
Basically will never back a SFG title until they string together a few great games. The price is just outlandish for a publisher with such a bad track record. Plus gameplay looks boring.
Well, if Board games ever flop at least you got a back up plan😂
He kinda sounds like Sting😀
From my personal experience anything you back on Kickstarter is fantastic value ... I learned that the hard way when not backing Euthia and The great wall ... then decided I really want it ... had to pay literally triple the price on Ebay of what I would have paid on Kickstarter :(... even if you do not like it ,you can always sell Kickstarter game
The late pledge for Euthia is open right now on Kickstarter. Far less than triple the price?
@@DarkHedx I know but I missed the first Kickstarter and 2nd re- print with the expansion I did back, but it was canceled because apparently, they did not get enough backers even though they reached the requested goal ... and it seemed at the time that we would never ever get another print, as result copies on eBay started literally selling out so fast that you could not even find one to buy ... So when I did finally find one, I instantly bought it thinking that was my last chance to get it , and then as a joke 2 months later they reopened Kickstarter after I already spent triple lol / and yeah I did back this time the expansion ...
Regarding the Great wall, I, unfortunately, missed both times the pledge ... whilst people still are selling the core game on eBay, to save my life I can't find the Black powder miniature expansion... been looking for it ever since... and I have doubt I ever will because none seem to be selling it separately! the only black powder copy I found is from the guy in Australia who is selling it for as part of dragon pledge for 800 Dollars, and I cant afford that :(
@@Berndr Ahh damn fair enough.
@@Berndr I'm in for $1 atm on Euthia. Being you've got the original edition would you say it's worth it to up my pledge?
Yes, it is a fantastic exploration game, with exciting character development, and has lots of scenarios ... Combat is the only thing that is on the snooze side due to being too complex and too long in my opinion for a board game format ... but again lots of solo players seem to love it ... but if you play with 4 people ... 4th person literally can take a nap till his turn comes ... because of that
My group has redesigned the whole combat system to be fast and efficient and in my opinion, made the game even better and more fluid
We also play only one action token per player to keep the game moving rather than having a player play all 3 actions on his turn ... and 4th player nap till his turn comes ...
YOU ARE AWESOME! ❤❤❤
Thanks :)
@@BoardGameCo 🥰
Dice Tower whom I don't always agree with said it best. This company makes great mini and shitty games.
I'd back the game only to resale it. But I don't have money even for that.
Came for Elden ring stayed for the singing.
this is too pricey for what we get and they will pump the shit out of it with lots of other expansions for each zones ... its a cash grab on the franchise
I mean...too late for me. Already backed ;D
Oh good, the singing back. The chef's kiss of cringe.
So cool
Accidentally "should you back it?" channel already answered that question so well that I am totally convinced
This game is a complete rip off!
first like from me bro.
