This, in the used market I've managed to get my hands on Nemesis+Lockdown and about every expansion but kings(variation on the queen) for 200€. I got the tainted grail+Stretch goals + Stories + 2 story expansions + monsters of avalon (miniatures set) sundropped for 150€. I also got the all in sundropped edition of the great wall sundropped for 300€, which other than the base game was still sealed. It's thus very likely that this game will join my ranks, some months after release, when a guy has to sell it quite a bit cheaper because he no longer plays games.
I want to go all-in on this just so I can roleplay an Alf named Gordon Shumway that just repeats "No problem!" and tries to eat cats all the time. That would totally be worth $463 CAD + $107 for shipping. Is there a stretch goal that allows us to rename the game: "Lands of Evershade: Melmac Reborn"? It would be a missed opportunity if it didn't come to pass...
Both Alf and Dwerg are Germanic in origin and existed before Elf and Dwarf. So they aren't just obvious word twists being obvious. ;) In Dutch for instance, dwerg=dwarf and an alf is a mythological being that is fairy adjacent (folklore gets complicated fast) Other than Alf being an acronym for Alien Life Form, I'm not sure how they came up with that character's name. But it wouldn't surprise me if they noted the similarity to elf during the concept stage and someone mentioned it's actually old norse/germanic for it.
Thanks for pulling me back on this one. And for reminding me about Arydia. I'm super excited for Arydia, and it'll be a while before I even get a chance to play that - currently about maybe halfway through Frosthaven and also have ISS Vanguard on deck along with a couple smaller campaign games on the side (Distant Skies and Tidal Blades 2), plus a couple others coming this winter (Earthborne Rangers and Rogue Angels), so it'll probably be at least couple years before I have time for something more besides all these, ha.
Thanks! The topic on the combat is what talked me from going off the edge of the cliff. I went ahead and basically canceled my pledge. 😅 I'm primarily a Solo player in which Dungeon Crawlers is typically my favorite genre, so I value combat far more over narrative. Like you mentioned, I was trying to get a sense on what the combat was like but wasn't getting too much info from the crowdfunding page. So I was becoming skeptical. Now hearing that combat may barely happen is what convinced me from canceling. Especially from what I see from the combat is pretty standard fare which didn't come across as special compared to what I already have. This actually made convinced me that I made the right choice in backing Grimcoven!
Two words why i wont be backing: Isofarian Guard. I know and LOVE that game and ive barely scratched the surface. And it was $250 for the all in, not close to $400 after shipping.
You should watch Shelfside’s review of the prototype… this one is hard to not back. They were super critical of Grimcoven with a 5/10 but they are gushing over LoE with 9/10s and very well explained why. Your video as always helps, but it may not be enough this time. 😬
1. I know they said 5/10 with a potential to be 9/10 if they fixed stuff, but they stuff they needed to fix was WAY more than what they need to do for Lands of Evershade. And at the point I had to give money to them it was 5/10, not whatever potential the game could have. I watched Shelfside’s video twice, I also watched game brigades videos, boardgameco, and every single other one out there. Since grimcoven was my FOR SURE back since they announced it for this year over any other campaign even Lands of Evershade. But I ended up not backing and deciding on secondhand market if they actually deliver the changes, it’s a gamble. And yes they have made changes these past few months and I’ve been keeping up with them. While some do address concerns I can see new concerns rising from how they are dealing with them. Fiddliness being a main concern. I sincerely hope it turns out to be a 9 or 10/10 and I will get it secondhand if so. Probably even at a better price than now as it normally is with AR games, but my main point was that the risk of a company making a game a 5 to a 10 than a 9 to a 10 is far greater for the former 5/10 game, plain and simple. Lands of Evershade is far more polished and ready as a product and it is in AR’s wheelhouse with games like Tainted Grail and Kings of Ruin on their background. Grimcoven is their first real boss battler iteration, so I wouldn’t be surprised a 2.0 version comes out or something for it if the game doesn’t do great (similar to their first Tainted Grail iteration). 2. I love Alex and continue to watch him, but i don’t listen to the score he gives to games from CMON and AR for his obvious conflict of interest and bias. Regardless if you disclose it or acknowledge it, by the nature of it a bias is still there in the back of your head whether you want it or not. It is impossible to be 100% impartial in his specific situation. If he really did enjoy grimcoven to say 4/5 great for him; however, from gameplay I saw and I saw every single one of them, it didn’t seem that good YET. Thanks for the discussion though and I really hope both these games become or remain amazing.
@@HazardGoat that’s an argument I cannot disagree with 😂 he’s humor can be loud. I’d recommend watched the final sections where he scores and says why at least. But if you can bear it it’s good.
Great video! Thank you! I think you missed a very important point though. A lot of Awaken Realms games got some sort of 2.0 improvements, rulebook/journals updates, second printing updates with typos/mistakes fixes. And since this game is so text heavy, the chances of mistakes and "second printing fixes" are very high. From this campaign it is obvious they will follow up with more adventures and/or reprint of this game (The way they explained how your out of core box adventures gonna be standing all pretty next to the game on a bookshelf or whatnot indicates, at least to me, they are planning to spend more time on this game and this universe they created). With all that being said, I think if you have a backlog of campaign games and are willing to wait for a better/leaner/less typos/better language type of game, you should wait for the next crowdfunding campaign for this game
I ended up cancellint my pledge 6hrs before it ends. Mainly because i thought to my self, they will reprint this just like tainted grail with some revisions. And i'll buy the improve version in 3-4years time.
@@laxuscloud2495 I agree. In their latest update they said they have plenty more stories and adventures they want to share in this universe. I am confident there will be more crowdfunding campaigns for this game
I think as a counterpoint to the upkeep critique...as someone that has DM'd before and wanted a faster, easier way to run campaigns, this seems like the right amount of fiddly. I hope they have plans to continue with this world because I think the foundational mechanics rock.
Fiddly is probably a better word than upkeep for what was described. The fiddly is finding the right token or (in most of these games) tracking monster HP. Upkeep is taking actions for the game or updating states to keep the game running. Things like ticking down a timer, activating monsters, drawing and resolving event cards, etc.
I am kind of sad that I heard about Arydia so late, totally missed that kickstarter. Is Arydia supposed to go on retail? Or do you think I should wait for the eventual 2nd reprinting where it might go on kickstarter again (hope that is the case if the game is a hit)
@@winghong3 I'm not sure if it will go to retail, best place would be to ask through to their website I think, or on BGG forums they might monitor those and have a response
@@martinidamian haha it's a linen closet! (I'm on a contract and so this is the best spot I've got for sound and privacy where I'm staying, my house looks 10% better! Haha)
This just strikes me as Sleeping Gods with the keyword-pathing adventure book and light combat combine with the AR (admittedly awesome) treatment. That's not a slam. I'm interested in backing this because of it, not despite it.
Inexplicably doesn't give a lid for the character board? Oh, I think there's about a $40 reason why it's not included in the base(ment) version. It's working amazingly well also, if they've got you angling for the deluxe version.
You might have actually convinced me to not go all-in. But we both know Hextra will pressure me into backing it so I might as well just give up now and do it.
My reason is that I bought ISS Vanguard used a year and a half ago and haven’t touched it since so I DEFINITELY shouldn’t get another campaign game, especially with STALKER on the way.
I've played 3 STALKER missions. I'm really digging it. Still not sure whether I like it or Earth Under Siege more. But, they both provide a fun take on stealth-based mechanics.
@ glad to hear it! I did single batch shipping so I won’t see my copy for a minute, but I couldn’t justify spending that much on shipping earlier this year.
You should definitely give ISS Vanguard a go. It is one of the most interesting games I have played in the last years. Great story with many unexpected twists. Really great game.
So I watched this specifically to talk myself out of getting it. I have a ton of campaigns and don’t play most. But even after all of the good points you made the thing that makes me not want to play the most is the names. Alf?? Maybe this is a “lost in translation” thing since they are a European company, but anyone my age in America will think of the Alf. That alone almost makes me not want to get it. Then I see those sweet, sweet minis… and I waver.
We had ALF in Europe as well, so that was my first association too. Furthermore, since German is my first language, I just can't take the "Dwergs" serious, as it's just a mix of "Dwarf" and its German translation "Zwerg". It sounds even funnier to German speakers. Sorry, but that's just lazy.
Alf is the original "name" of elf in Nordic. In fact, elf is an alteration of the said Alf. Although we also know the character in Europe... the translation is actually correct.
@@Hesber1984 That’s interesting. Still difficult for Americans because of the comedic tv show. But thanks for sharing. Looked up that Alf is the Middle Low German for evil spirit. Also saw it as Alfar and Aelfar. Either one of those would have been better but that’s just preference. Appreciate your comment.
Ouch! That's rough to hear. If I may ask, where are you located in the world that AR hasn't gotten you Tamashii yet? If it helps any, its a pretty fun game imo. Have you gotten the after market acrylic tokens for it? The cardboard ones that come with the game are just not at all satisfying to play with pulling from the bag. I ordered the acrylic tokens and it makes game play a big step up.
I live in Poland, Wroclaw, really near the AR head office - ironic. They telling me that package is stuck at shipping hub... yes for f 6 weeks now. I didn't saw acrylic tokens option. :|
campaign games....we started gaming in 2019, we've finished gloomhaven & frosthaven and halfway through tainted grail kings of ruin. Got 2 on the shelf (sleeping gods & tanares adventures).
@@adilmajid8785 I didn't, I didn't have the time and have had a couple on dice throne anyway, but I always cover them in Monday's Crowdfunding Countdown in any campaigns last week of funding. That was in the big 2 hour week, something like 40 games finished up that week!
Yeah the combat lacking seemed a red flag for my personal taste, I love adventure but as mainly a solo player I can’t get into that aspect with BG3 being available
I think the most helpful was probably you mentioning Arydia here.😂 I missed that one, and it looks far more amazing - it really has everything I didn't know Evershade seems to be missing. Congratulations, you talked me out of one game just to talk me into another one - one that I can't get anymore. Well, at least that probably means I won't be spending a lot of money now 😂 Apart from this, Evershade sounded like the perfect game for me, basically like being able to play a dnd campaign solo - which ist EXACTLY what I'm looking for. However, I'm also very short on both space in general (small flat) and table space as well. I only own one table, where I'm working from remotly 50% of the time, eat and play games. Letting a game sitting around works only on weekends. And while I do get campaign games on the table, I don't play games when I need too long to set them up and down each day. So I was kind of suprised by the rage I've felt because of the gatekeeping the storage solution to the special edition. Basically, I have to pay 40$ more (a whole other retail game!) just to get a reasonable storage system - and an upgraded version I don't even want, because it just needs more space I don't have and the standees look very nice. I felt a bit better after you complaining about that as well, thanks! 😄 Also, I'm still waiting for Kings of Ruins and the additional campaigns for the original Tainted Grail, as I bought that one in retail. Backing another narrative campaign game of the same company when I have three on the way which want to be played seems silly. I might reevaluate getting Evershade either as a Late Pledge or in retail, when we know more about it and it's closer to actually getting the game. If I want to get it in german, I'm looking at a 2 years wait at the very least. Who knows what happens until then.
@@velar1s yeah the extra 40 does suck but feels necessary to not make it incredibly annoying - I also have a smaller space which is also why I'm hoping arydia sets the standard for amazing save systems haha
@@RoomandBoardReviews It's also apparently gamefound exclusive. That's quite a new take on FOMO, fear of missing out on the storage solution lol. Very sneaky! Concerning save systems I really like the Isofarian Guard one. It's a insanly huge box and the biggest table hogger I have, but it's really well organized and set up very quickly. I'm looking forward to a video about Arydia, though, if you're going to make one!
Thanks for talking me down. I too backed Arydia, and I recently got Tidal Blades RotU delivered, and have yet to start Frosthaven (I know...) so reminding me that I already have too many campaign games is appreciated.
Honestly, the downgrades of the double-layer sheets/lack of lids is just so... urgh. I understand they have to justify their special editions, but that essentially makes all their retail versions intentionally and knowingly worse from an usability perspective. I just think this approach really sucks, you know?
Honestly, based on what I have seen, including this video, it seems indeed as a extensive choose your own adventure game with a whole lot of upkeep. Which reminds me of isofarion gaurd, which has been pretty fun so far but I do keep the nagging feeling of, this would work so much easier as a computer game.
Solution for single edition saving: clingwrap 😂 More seriously, this is an easy pass for me. These kinds of AR games you should always wait for the reprint so you can get a good idea if you'll actually like it. Don't want to end up like all those Etherfields regretters...
EY! I got etherfields! How dare you... wait.. I see your point... I got so tired during "tutorial" and figuring out whats what I didnt want to look at the game... Its still half open on the counter for last weeks... ready to play yet i dont want to touch that hahah
Creo que este video de 5 razones es mi favorito hasta la fecha; por el tema y reflexión que tiene. PD: no comprare el complemento de miniaturas; ya vi que apenas son necesarias.
Sadly, I am still on the fence with this one. I do like what I see with it but your number 1 point does hit home a little. Fortunately, I have actually played through most of my campaign games. We are finishing the main campaign for one of my last two un-played games, ISS Vanguard, currently and I have played the other ones that I have except for Kings of Ruin but I am going to convince myself that in the two years that it will take to get this one that I will have probably played through it by then.
You know the game is really good when each point Chris makes starts with him laughing lmao. At least you're true to the series! :D Thank god I've backed on day one :D In my defense, I never went for any Tainted Grail games, but this one got me excited AF, so I just prepped it in my budget looong time before the campaign started. Cheers man!
@RoomandBoardReviews Just commented on that before I scrolled down here. But yes, Dutch also uses Alf for a mythological creature that's similar to fae. In daily usage we stick to elf for elves tho. LotR style elves being quite different. But dwarf we do call dwerg.
@@RoomandBoardReviews As mentioned above, an Alf is another mythological creature, but unlike an Elf, it is not concidered to be a pure good being. It's not pure evil either, but it is known to tease and even harass people. If i remember correctly it's somewhat related to Gnomes. We once had a very rich folklore here in western Europe. :)
💯 with you all the way regarding your comparisons to Arydia! I am still so excited for that to arrive, and what a lovely + supportive community formed around that campaign, too.
I'm getting this, but I'm definitely not getting the minis since you'll barely see combat. Also, the pricing on this game is insane if you want all in with sundrop and premium books.
Thanks for stopped me from backing. Honestly I still half way of ISS and I am already sick of the upkeeping. Besides I don’t see difference between all the other campaign game fm AR.
A narrative game written by a non-native speaker, edited only by non-native speakers... I can't count how many times I laughed out loud during Tainted Grail at malapropisms and completely weird turns of phrase... Not immersive is the least you can say
I love the game but the major turn-off was the high fantasy race tropes that they went with. Elf, Dwarf, Orc. I wish they switched it up ever so slightly like Gloomhaven did. I understand why people use these tropes because they are a shortcut. We all know what Elves are like. We have all seen LoTR. This is why I liked what Stormsunder was promising. Yes, I know that Stormsunder may never see the light of day but I liked how they had some tranditional characters but also had a “Half-demon Pirate” and pair of “sadistic Vampire Twins.” Granted, Stormsunder didn’t have “create your own character” so making generic races might be the “way to go”. They (Evershade) did have as a stretch goal, a “Shrew” race that can poison people so I thought that was interesting. How about a Necromancer build? Lovely game mechanics and story seems fantastic but the characters seem so cliche.
Pal-addins as their name suggests, are great for groups. :) I'm all-in on this one. Perhaps I could've used that money on an Awaken Realms tramp tat....but that seems painful.
I just erase my items in the pledge manager: 280$ without VAT and sending costs. I will try to finish Tainted Grail the fall of Avalon before the mew tainted grail come.
Does it bother anyone else, that the special edition stretch goals are standees not miniatures? It’s a little difficult for the creature standees to seem menacing in stature when they are faced with 3D hero sculpts that tower over them 😂
I backed this because I was extremely excited about the premise, but was disappointed by the combat and linearity in the playthroughs. Then I looked at all of the unfinished campaigns on my shelf and cancelled my pledge. Thanks as always for reinforcing my decision!
Every time I see these narrative focused RPG board games, I always remind myself that I can play couch co-op Original Sin 2 and BG3 with my friends instead. No upkeep, no reading, no setup and teardown, no rules explanation, just fun. If I want the 3-5 player social aspect I'd MUCH rather have the free flowing and open experience of a true pen & paper RPG where the GM let's you do whatever.
Looks like another gimmick, I will wait to see if they come out with a revised version later. Thank you in advance to all you who are paying hundreds of dollars to beta test this thing.
The non-miniature differences between standard and special edition, with the possible exception of the hardback book, are just a rip off to make the standard edition non-viable, so people have to buy the special version. They could have made a usable standard edition for $89, but they want you to buy the $119 pledge. It's similar to how (as with all their campaigns) they include the minis box in the gameplay pledge, even though they are totally unnecessary for gameplay... All that said, I've pledged for the special edition plus the add-on adventures. I do want the hardback book, so I figure I'm paying about $20 for the minis. But the important thing is that it still falls within the price range I'm willing to pay for a game of this type. And PC minis can stand out against standees - it works in Gloom/Frosthaven...
I’ve been looking forward to this all year but I just have too many campaigns. Looking at selling Tanares and I did sell ISS Vanguard and Primal and those are all good games I was looking forward to about this much if not more. Campaigns man…
I hate to admit your #1 point is right on, but it's right on. I have almost 500 games at hand and have not even made a dent with gameplay. That being said, I probably will back this because I'm a board game slut.
I learned from games like Gloomhaven and My Father's Work that reading out large chunks of text to a group is the death of fun. I am considering backing Lands of Evershade but ONLY for the solo experience. I'd need to learn more about how that's going to work, though. Also, "Alf" is just too silly.
@@HazardGoat yeah you really have to be in the mood for it, and I realize the times when I'm in the mood aren't that prevalent to warrant getting everything
At first I thought: "Hey, wow!" But then, between hundreds of Pen&Paper-RPGs in my library and my Dungeon-Crawl-Board-Game loving neighbours downstairs, I went to: "Okay, but why?" Going to keep on playing P&P with the P&P crowd, while keeping on crawling board game dungeons with my neighbours.
YES! This is game in particular from AR feels like a mini cash grab because it is truly making an RPG character 10x more tactile and calling it a board game! Nemesis has the hidden traitor gimmick with card driven tactics, Tainted Grail is *nearly* this level of RPG--rip off but the card driven strategy made it a better board game. If you want this type of game just get an RPG, and I dont even mean D&D! Go for Kids on Bikes, Candela Obscura, Household, Blades in the Dark, all of these I've mentioned are dice pool systems instead of a single d20 roll like D&D so you can even get the tactile enjoyment of lots of things on the table. Just not a "board game" for me, Id rather play a larger RPG with my friends is exactly right.
You’re number one reason is also my main reason to stay away from these kind of games now. I have so many campaign games I started and not finished yet or not even read the rules yet… No more campaign games until I have finished at least three of them. 🤪
Haha, thanks! I try to be the voice of restraint in a sea of people often telling you how great everything is. Of course I get excited about games as well, but the reality is I certainly don't have time for everything so want to make sure when I play a game I'm really excited to get it to the table.
I watched this entire video and my main takeaway is get the special edition, not the standard edition 😎
Which is scummy that AR basically made the cheapest version undesirable … this is the pinnacle of predatory design practices. Pass.

Subscribed, since you just saved me a couple of hundred quid! I will go finish EF/ISSV/TG instead!
Before watching, is it because it's ANOTHER CAMPAIGN?
I needed this, my wallet needed this... we needed this.
Both Alf and Dwerg are Germanic in origin and existed before Elf and Dwarf. So they aren't just obvious word twists being obvious. ;)
In Dutch for instance, dwerg=dwarf and an alf is a mythological being that is fairy adjacent (folklore gets complicated fast)
Other than Alf being an acronym for Alien Life Form, I'm not sure how they came up with that character's name. But it wouldn't surprise me if they noted the similarity to elf during the concept stage and someone mentioned it's actually old norse/germanic for it.
Thank you. You have pulled me back from the edge again
I'm primarily a Solo player in which Dungeon Crawlers is typically my favorite genre, so I value combat far more over narrative.
@@Theaquasnake nice yeah grimcoven will definitely have more of that combat feeling
I tried to watch that guy but he is WAY too shouty.
@@HazardGoat that’s an argument I cannot disagree with 😂 he’s humor can be loud. I’d recommend watched the final sections where he scores and says why at least. But if you can bear it it’s good.
My brain just always reads the title of that game as Grimeoven. It's like a regular oven, but covered in grime.
@@laxuscloud2495I did exactly the same. Went all-in from the start, cancelled my pledge right when they got to 7mil
@@andrewk2118 ngl im excited it did well. As they will probably be more inclined to improve it in the future. As there were many..many backers.

@pheoxin thematically 10/10, mechanics 5/10. Depends how much you like rolling dice a lot
You literally just saved me 200+ euros
I wasnt interested in this game at all until you mentioned ALF. I miss that little guy
@@oliwardcomics it's the race to be!

If you are experienced with TTRPGs - you will love it, if not - then it depends...
You’ve convinced me not to back it. I don’t want to sit around and choose my own adventure for up to 3 hours. That sounds absolutely dreadful.
This just strikes me as Sleeping Gods with the keyword-pathing adventure book and light combat combine with the AR (admittedly awesome) treatment. That's not a slam. I'm interested in backing this because of it, not despite it.
Reason number 1: it's by Awaken Realms and therefore the gameplay loop is likely repetitive and shallow
That’s true , and I can’t tell the difference between this , ISS ,EF and TG

@ I have a group I’d want to run through it, but maybe I should try playing it solo to get started.
We just finished Vanguard a few weeks back, incredible game and well worth giving a go.
@@manuelwenzlik861 Dwerg is literally the word for dwarf in Dutch.
Thank you sir, that was enough to calm me down.
Despite being SIX weeks after the end of shipping, AR still can't deliver my Tamahsii... f joke. :/
Did you do one for Dice Throne Outcasts?
Well, at least that probably means I won't be spending a lot of money now 😂
Apart from this, Evershade sounded like the perfect game for me, basically like being able to play a dnd campaign solo - which ist EXACTLY what I'm looking for. 😄
Also, I'm still waiting for Kings of Ruins and the additional campaigns for the original Tainted Grail, as I bought that one in retail.
Arguments 2-5 are literally positives for me.
Argument 1 doesn’t apply to me as I am new to board games.
@@warrenwise8798 that's great, I hope you end up loving it :)
Honestly, the downgrades of the double-layer sheets/lack of lids is just so... urgh. I understand they have to justify their special editions, but that essentially makes all their retail versions intentionally and knowingly worse from an usability perspective. I just think this approach really sucks, you know?
The standard version is a downgrade, not the special edition an upgrade. It's a shame.
So, get a redundant all-in pledge? 🤔
Solution for single edition saving: clingwrap 😂
More seriously, this is an easy pass for me.
You mentioned two other alternatives. One of them was Arydia. Do you remember what the other game was?

@@Lionhunt3rs Hope you love it!

17:23 "Dwerg" is "Dwarf" in my Dutch language.
@@AtheistBelgium oh cool! What about Alf?
@RoomandBoardReviews
Just commented on that before I scrolled down here.

Very well considered.
A narrative game written by a non-native speaker, edited only by non-native speakers... I can't count how many times I laughed out loud during Tainted Grail at malapropisms and completely weird turns of phrase... Not immersive is the least you can say
This should have been an interactive book
THANK-YOU!
Hhmm just backed as a noob to board types games. Unsure now.. but will get nemesis next year
Pal-addins as their name suggests, are great for groups. :)
I'm all-in on this one. Perhaps I could've used that money on an Awaken Realms tramp tat....but that seems painful.
19:58 "Did they take you to the secret dungeon with the swings?" LMAO! That's the next Awaken Realms game. Fifty Evershades of Grey.
Pal (as in "hey buddy ole Pal") - La - din (rhymes with Bin). ..... sorry, I'll show myself out

a reason should be that it is a campaign, barely any replayability
Save me Room and Board!

@RoomandBoardReviews thats the point: time is too short to play average or even bad games.
