    DISCLAIMER
    Only attempt to do this if your camera is out of warranty, you have a penchant for taking things apart, and you know your way around a soldering iron.
    My E-M10 II's rear lcd started flickering. It would only work at some angles and eventually it stopped working all together. It's a tell-tale sign that the flex cable has worn out at the fold/hinge. If your camera is still under warranty Olympus would cover it. If not, it's an as-quoted repair for $200USD + tax and shipping. I've had this camera for well over 2 years so I had nothing to lose. I saved myself $160!
    Thanks for watching!
    I got a new replacement flex cable off eBay:

    Thanks for posting this. I just installed a replacement flex cable in my E-M10 Mark II with the help of this video. Before, the screen would only work at certain angles. Now it's perfect. Although, the flex cable I got from eBay seemed to be a little bit thinner/flimsier than the OEM cable. We'll see how long it holds up.

    Just did the same - thank you a lot!
    The main problem was getting old flex cable out - don't be afraid to fold it, it actually goes to trash. Putting everything together is easier :)

    Thanks from France. I will probably try that. Did your screen was black, but not a real black, a backlit black ?
    Like you it didn't occur suddenly. It got worse progressively. Now, it's all the time.

    • @rvjr
      @rvjr  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes. It progressively got worse and worse. At times it would only work at certain angles. Then one day it stopped working completely because there was a tear in the original cable. Before the repair, the last time the screen stopped working it was scrambled with green and pink colors then it went black.

      Hello @Arjen van den Akker , before going for the replacement of the flexible cable, I decided to touch it and move it a little bit with my finger and finally the connection is back. No screen problem anymore.
      I didn’t unmount anything, I just inclined the screen to get a little access to a small part of the flexible cable with my finger.
      Now, I don’t move the screen and use it as a fixe screen to avoid any risk of connexion problems.
      Of course, it’s not the perfect solution but it works for me.
      Sorry for my approximate English, I am French :-)

      On the video we see that welding is also requier. It must also be a little bit tricky ! No ?

      @@rvjr Mine devolved issue few days ago. Worked only tilted in certain position. I temporally fixed it by loosing up lcd backplate and taping flex with gold electrical tape. Now works only when folded flat 😂 Bit of progress. I have ordered flex from ebay and will attempt to fix myself once it arrives(might take while for delivery from Asia). MK2 is my favourite camera for street photography and I'm not keen on newer versions. In worst case will buy another MK2.

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice explanation. However, the step where you have to pass the cable through the two parts of the hinge is the most difficult I think. I'm stuck on this step :-/ There is a part that is missing which is very very tricky. Too bad.

    • @rvjr
      @rvjr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i copied the way the original cable folded and paid attention as to where it passed through on the back of the screen. it's the "sweatiest" part of the repair for sure because after you make sure all the parts are in place and all the terminals are in place. that's when you solder the tail with the 3 ends to the board.

    Great video. The screen on my E-M10ii works great, except for the touchscreen functionality. I've tried everything, from resetting to firmware update and of course checked all relevant settings. Could it be the cable?

    • @rvjr
      @rvjr  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      apparently there's a chip on the backside of the lcd indicated by a square panel that is the touch sensor. that could be damaged or loose. but I'm not too sure.

    • @rvjr
      @rvjr  ปีที่แล้ว

      it’s plausible so long as you get the right part number. I think the way they are put together is very similar

    I have seen a lot of price difference in the cables that appear in the link, do you know what difference there is between them? Thanks a lot.

    • @rvjr
      @rvjr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i honestly do not but it's safe to assume that they all come from the same place and certain local economical factors play into the differences in price. sometimes you get lucky and there's an ebayer already in country that carries stock of the cable.

    Good morning. I managed to complete the procedure without too many problems, but once the whole thing was finished and reassembled, the Olympus no longer turned on: in particular, the AF illuminator had turned on steadily for a few seconds and then never started again. Has anyone else happened the same? Someone who know why?

    I got the same case with my E-M10 Mark III.
    Does the E-M10 Mark II flex cable as same as E-M10 Mark III?
    Thanks

    • @rvjr
      @rvjr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i honestly have no idea. I've never taken apart a MkIII but you should be able to find the part specific to that model. The procedure is probably more or less the same.

  • @4Denwa

    Recently tried this repair and was unfortunately unsuccessful, feels like the replacement cable was even more fragile than the original damaged one...
    Edit: False alarm, just needed to re-seat the cable on the LCD side multiple times until I got a decent connection. I'm a bit disappointed with how Olympus designed this as it's simply prone to failure overtime :/

    • @rvjr
      @rvjr  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i wouldn't fault Olympus solely for the design. The particular camera was made during a time of transition where they couldn't guarantee quality control.
