Avi Kaplan, the low bass singer usually seen in a beanie cap, left the group about 7 yrs ago. The group's insanely fast-paced appearance and recording life was hard on him (he's normally a laid-back sit in the forest kind of guy) and his mother was seriously ill and contracts and promises kept him from taking time to be with her and his family.
But he's pursuing a solo career now. Most of his work is along the Folk music line. Your ears will thank you forever to hear his original "Change On The Rise"!!! 🙀💥🔥🔥🎉 th-cam.com/video/382BTxLNrow/w-d-xo.html
The new guy is Matt Salee, and he's great! (But Avi is our first love)

The best descriptions I've ever heard about the 3 'main' versions of this song (Simon and Garfunkel, Disturbed, Pentatonic) are:
The Simon and Garfunkel version reflected the sad situation we were in and facing.
The Disturbed version reflected the anger and frustration we felt because we failed to address the problem.
The Pentatonic version reflects renewed hope of overcoming and reminder of the warning.

    • @MarkusSchaber

I agree. I just feel mad when some people hear a cover of the song, and then refer to the Disturbed version as the "original". I even heard someone describing the Simon and Garfunkel version a "boring cover" of the original by Disturbed. 🤐

Kevin Olusola (KO), the beatboxer, performs a solo cover (or Kover) of Marian Hill's Down which is spectacular. He plays the cello, saxophone, and piano; and, has appeared twice at Carnegie Hall. He speaks multiple languages including Mandarin. Kevin also has a beautiful tenor voice and graduated pre-med from Yale. Unfortunately although Avi did initially leave the group on good terms they are no longer close 😕 😢 the politics of the rights to the music they created caused a rift after attorneys got involved! They had to scrap a whole album's worth of music they'd been working on for years and start over because they didn't have Avi's consent to record it! This caused a huge strain on their relationships! If you listen to some of the songs in the Lucky Ones album especially Happy Now you can hear how they had to overcome a lot and breakthrough to a new future! Avi is however still very close to Kevin 😊

Check out their version of John Lennon's "Imagine". Amazing! Be sure to have a handkerchief at the ready. Same with "Say Something," which is among my absolute favorites of theirs..
Only one member has changed. Avi, the original bass (the bearded guy), left several years ago for personal reasons. It was a completely amicable departure as these folks are pure class. Avi was replaced by a new bass, Matt, who sings those gorgeous seismic low notes here.
Sometime people newly discovering PTX think there have been more personnel changes, but that's just because both Mitch and Kirsten dramatically change their looks and style frequently.
Superfruit is a project by Mitch and Scott. They do a lot of great collaborations and also a lot of more club-type dance music. They also do other things like games and jokes. Truly fun to watch.
Everyone has solo work as well. Avi has been releasing his own stuff since he left and it really worth a listen. The one that will completely blow you away is Kevin Olusola's solo work. His stuff is otherworldly. Some people believe he may not even be human as there's nothing he can't do, and is known to frequently do many things all at the same time!

You are a very enjoyable, animated, and passionate reactor, and not just for Pentatonix. I came as a Pentaholic and I'm enjoying the full channel, man. Keep it up.
Two of the members of Pentatonix, Mitch who you know, and the blonde baritone Scott, also have a side channel from when they shared an apartment together called "Superfruit" (tongue in cheek reference to the fact that both are LGBTQ+). They play around a lot on the side channel, but they also do things that are more risque than Pentatonix's family-friendly brand reputation.
Eventually... not yet... you're going to want to check out Superfruit's cover of Katy Perry's anthem, "Rise". They upgraded it with the help of three other LGBTQ+ vocal performers they knew from LA and their professional lives - Brian Justin Crum, Mario Jose, and Mary Lambert - they released Superfruit's cover of it in the early fall following the massacre at the Orlando queer nightclub, Pulse, back in 2016. Their rendition of the song is powerful for message, as well as for a vocal masterclass, and a further testimony to the arranging skills of Scott Hoying. Definitely worth a listen when you exhaust the 'big time' Pentatonix hits (or when you're just ready for a break).
And don't forget to set a reminder for yourself - once we get back closer to Christmas, Pentatonix made their fame on TH-cam by upgrading standard holiday carols for years, so there's an entire songbook of their performances that are just Holidays related (and worth every listen).

The current bass is Matt Sallee. Please react to one of Avi's first solo originals called Change on the Rise. It's been featured in a couple of television shows. He has a new song called "I can't lie", and a couple other new tracks he's released on his upcoming LP entitled "First place I go" and All is Well". The LP is called Floating on a Dream. Pentatonix is amazing and as you said...each is super talented. Thanks for this reaction.

Matt's presence (bass) dates their videos. Avi left in Sept. 2017 and Matt filled in on the 2017 Christmas tour, then was hired as a permanent member in 2018. He has made his own place in the band. He is the youngest member of PTX. This is the only change in the lineup of the band. Kirsten and Mitch change their appearance regularly but there is only the five of them.
And FYI, they do call themselves a band, not a group. Scott (baritone) once said their bodies are their instruments. So like any band, they do have instruments. Theirs just happen to walk and talk.

They have had only one change of personnel since they started: Avi (ah-vee, their original bass, the bearded gentleman) left amicably in 2017 and was replaced by Matt, whom you saw here. (Although Mitch and Kirstin change their looks so often, sometimes reactors are fooled into thinking they've been replaced!) A good video of theirs that shows off Matt's personality is their cover of "Attention," a favorite of mine that doesn't get enough, er, attention.
Your idea about "Say Something" as a good choice for an emotional song from them was spot-on. Definitely watch it. It includes some surprises from Kevin (the beatboxer).

The new guy is Matt Salee. He replaced the guy with the beard, Avi Kaplan, in 2017 when Avi left the group for personal reasons. Matt is truly an incredible bass. He doesn't go as low as Avi but my god, he can make otherworldly sounds. That was the only member change in the groups history. Also, a side note on something you mentioned, they all have solo stuff to varying degrees. Kirstin has a solo album out. Scott and Mitch have a duo album out and a bunch of other content on their channel Superfruit. Avi Kaplan is currently solo and is still releasing new music on his youtube channel. Kevin does covers and has some awesome original songs he does with his beatboxing and cello.
As far as recommendations for emotional songs: The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Exit Signs (original song), Standing By (original song), Light in the Hallway (original song), and probably the most emotional is their cover of Imagine by John Lennon. You got a LOT to watch still lmao.

there are many PTX performances that elevate a listener's soul, such as 'The Prayer' and 'Amazing Grace,' many more, but of all of these, two effect me so much that I can never contain my emotions; John Lennon's 'Imagine' and 'Mary Did You Know.' Even more interesting, when they tackle a seemingly less significant song like' 'Little Drummer Boy.' or 'Carol of the Bells,' or 'Cheerleader,' and they make something astounding out of it. Your mention of 'Say Something' is absolutely fantastic because it was one of the first performances that had Kirsty take the lead - and of course Kevin shows one of his many other talents - as a virtuoso cellist! This vocal group is a treasure!

"Mad World," "Say Something," "Dancing on my Own." And, of course, "Imagine." And, in the newer album, "Never Gonna Cry Again." I'd rank those fairly high on the list of emotional heart-wrenchers.
There's a video somewhere of Avi explaining that he'd decided, after some hefty soul-searching, that he had to leave the group, sometime in late 2017. Partly because his mother was struggling with a major illness, and partly simply because the touring schedule wasn't allowing him to spend as much time with his family as he needed. He worked with the group to help find Matt through blind auditions (they didn't know who they were auditioning for) and everyone is still on good terms.
You mentioned that you want to listen to some other a capella groups. The three that vie for top spot are Pentatonix, Home Free and Voice Play. I'm a Pentaholic, but I have considerable investment in VoicePlay, as well. The usual comment that describes the three groups are: PTX is the Glee Club (or similar wholesome group), Home Free are the Good Old Boys, and Voice Play are the Theater Kids. The last four or five videos they've dropped have been HEAVY DUTY on costuming and environment. And their bass, Geoff ("Jeff") Castalucci, blows most basses right out of the water. I like Avi's bass better, as a singing voice, but Geoff has some major low notes and subharmonics. And their beatboxer is HUGELY inventive. PTX Kevin literally sounds like he carries a drum kit in his mouth and body, but Layne of Voice Play adds a lot of beatboxing noises that you've never heard before. For a first listen, I dunno where to steer you. You would probably enjoy "Queen in Five Minutes," which is a great medley in its own right, plus has some fun theatrical stuff as well. There are some reactors who actually dislike the theatrics - I find that I no longer watch them once they've declared this.
I can't help with Home Free - they have excellent stuff, I'm just not particularly a country fan and that's their primary focus. I have watched and enjoyed a number of their videos, but can't offer any suggestions.

I think your impressions of the strength, range, and power of each member of this are spot on. What is crazy is that even with such crazy individual talent, when they come together the resulting effect is greater than the sum of its parts.
