I have one of these units, and I occasionally have problems when booting it up. It doesn't start the first time I click the power button, only loud fans non-stop and no display at all, I force the shutdown after that, then I press the power button and it boots normally. Anyone knows how to fix this issue?

What is the best UPS for this workstation ? I am using 1100 VA but still having random shutdown problems while working from home but it works flawlessly while working in office.

I can confirm 256GB LRDIMM DDR3 installed on Z420 on E5-2560 v2 CPU. From online info I gathered, you can put RDIMM and LRDIMM up to 256 but with RDIMM DDR only up to 64GB. And only LRDIMM can go up to 1866 but mine is on 1600 for some reason. And, you need to have a v2 CPU to max out the memory, which not all Z420 MBs are capable of (some MBs can only have v1 CPU).

Many thanks for the Z420 videos. I can confirm that 256 Gb is possible on my V2 Z420 on v03.96 BIOS version running SK Hynix 256GB 8 x 32GB DDR3 ECC 1600 server memory, 600W PSU. Windows 11 Server. Back Memory shround installed, front memory shroud on order. I will update this comment when front shroud installed. Also ordered the Front Fan to help with cooling as these memory sticks run hot.

On the v2 with the 03.96, you can also use a v2 ivy bridge like the E5-2680 v2, making that machine even more goated

I just bought a refurbished one of these. it came with 8gb of ram. I had an issue with it not booting so I moved ram from slot 1 to slot 6 and that seemed to fix the problem. I haven't tried putting in back in slot 2. I also seem to have an issue with it choking when I put more than one external USB powered SSD drive. would that be a ram issue? I have not been able to determine the model of the MB. it doesn't seem to be listed on the board. I'd thought about upgrading the CPU but not sure if I can.
I think it has a 600 watt PS but it's really hard to see.

We have not experience this issue. Unless you have a high wattage graphics card and high wattage CPU, there shouldnt be any issues with the power demand. Which processor and GPU do you have installed. We do recommend adding 3 additional 8GB sticks and populate in the following slots: DIMM1, DIMM3, DIMM6, DIMM8. This will give optimal performance since there are 4 channels, and each one needs 1 DIMM for optimazation. Its common for memory to become loose during movement, which could have caused your initial issue which your troubleshooted by moving, try putting back in DIMM0 prior to upgrading your memory to confirm the DIMM slot is working.

@@tekboost these are the specs from the company where I purchased it. I did order 2 more 4gb sticks which should be here today. 1 × HP Z420 Workstation Desktop Computer PC Intel Xeon 2.8GHZ 8GB 1TB Win10 Pro and WIFI I looked at the PS and it seems to be a 600. I did reseat the original 4gb stick in it's proper place and so far it seems to be working.
my graphics card was an issue. it didn't have the correct drivers when I got it and windows update couldn't find them so I had to google it. they put in a dual output card on my request and with the pre-installed drivers - I was unable to expand my monitor from one to another. it only duplicated it. but that's fixed now. onto the next issue. curious about the 2 black SATA ports. and they ARE SATA ports. lol. and they are what my SSD is plugged into.

      Currently running manjaro kde.
