    My english teacher asked us to write a poem that expresses our life. I've taken the hardest engineering courses my community college has to offer, but this has to be the hardest assignment I've ever had

    it *absolutely* contains poetry. to equate it to poetry is another issue, and a silly one at that.

      @Shadow The Poet not sure i agree with that. bukowski?

    • @fluff975
      @fluff975 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Shadow The Poet your definition I think; that poetry should not have profanity or be vulgar or too sexual etc

      @Shadow The Poet fair enough, respect is mutual--have u read any bukowski though? he was largely known for his shameless vulgarity and profane vernacular, but he's one of my faves (more in spite of that than because of it, but it was certainly part of his appeal and made him stand out)

    This idea is such a breath of fresh air. Slam poetry and rap today has a major focus on the individual's specific experiences, such that these are essentially mediums for the artists to express themselves and process their own lives. But what is missing today is the poet that writes something more universal that can can be related to by many.

    Yes I think hip hop is poetry but I don't think all of hip hop is poetry some hip hop/rap singers can do it like tupac he did some good poems

    I'm assuming he is speaking about spoken word, not necessarily hip hop. Hip hop is a general culture. However, spoken word is almost, always associated with hip hop or the collective urban style depending on where you go. I'll just say, small towns don't recognize spoken word as much as urban areas does. Just my opinion.

    The question of whether something like hip-hop is or is not poetry is largely a question of semantics (just a question of if you define the two things in a way that is consitent with each other). The expressions 'hip-hop' and 'poetry' simply designate sets, the criterion for which is largely determined by the practical convenience of using these terms, and thus should not be taken as saying anything intrinsic about the value of their particular members.

    ummm. I think the question is one of whether hip-hop is consistent with our the common cultural understanding of what poetry is, not the question with the unbelievably obvious answer of 'it all depends on how you define it'. Poetry = {(hip-hop) | hip-hop ∈ poetry} ⇔ hip-hop ∈ poetry. (The fact that this is tautological (and works with 'apple' or anything else)) is obvious, and doesn't address the question.

    For me Hip Hop is Hip Hop. It does not need to be attached to another art form in order to be relevant. Hip Hop stands on its own. Quite frankly the conversation is a bottomless pit leading to nowhere. When I first heard the Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron, King Heroin by James Brown, Rappers Delight I heard black people doing what we do best. Creating, innovating, improvising, changing American Culture. I didn't stop and say that's poetry. Fuck no.

    Rap might be poetry by some definitions, but you cannot argue it is good poetry.

    Plenty of Tupac's lyrics can be both performed and read. Also, your arguments are not specific to Hip-Hop. Everything you said can be applied to most pop music. Why single out Hip-Hop?
