    Wanted to add.....
    I must be some kind of freak of nature. I love sailing along and then becalmed a thousand miles from nearest anything. A week or more. I'm simply most happy at sea. Becalmed means I'll be out longer....

    Nice videos, but, you should wear a harness and tether when going topsides alone and when on watch at night. No one thinks a rouge wave will sweep them overboard, until it does and then it's too late.

      Castaway Why does everyone feel like youtube posters need the advice of random strangers?? Does he seem like a novice who has no idea what he's doing? I am sure he does more sailing risk mitigation on a daily basis than we will do in our lives....

    • @castaway123100
      @castaway123100 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! He does seem like a novice with no idea of what he's doing. He definitely needs advice for being in weather like that with no harness and for not having control of his crew.
      He told his "crew" not to touch metal, and to go below decks several times at which he was totally ignored. He's not in control of the situation. It looks precarious at best.
      So, I would say it's his actions that inspire advice-giving comments. :)

      +Castaway You must be high buddy.....there is no crew in this video hence the term singlehanded in the title. I agree, wearing a harness is a prudent safety precaution and will wear one more often in the future.

    Excellent video! I thought that was a Mason 33 the whole video until the end I saw it was a double ender. Is that a Tayana 37 or some other Taiwanese boat? Gorgeous boat.

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a Tashiba 40 (aka Baba 40) built in Taiwan in ‘86. The boat is is in good hands with new NZ owners.

      It's a comment section??? There are a lot of sailing blogs to choose from out there. I wouldn't watch again with that music... feedback helps people making content to reach and keep an audience. If everyone made videos there wouldn't be an audience.

Like what to think about, trouble shooting mechanical probmems, how to think about weather and etc. Gave me a good understanding of how its really is sailing off shore. Cool this is my first video of yours and it made me Sbscribe. I will probably binge watch this weekend peace dude!!

    Ta Shing in the 1980's built some of the best cruising boats ever made. I had a Mason 44 and loved it. I now have a Hans Christian 33, which was also built in Taiwan during that golden decade of boat-building.

    I'm a novice sailor. Would like to know why you motor and risk running out of fuel needed to get through the harbor vs waiting. Was it to avoid a storm? Nice video. Thanks.

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I knew unfavorable winds would coincide with my arrival in NZ. I was using the motor in the light winds to make good time and try and beat the 'bad' weather. If I did run out of fuel in the main tank, there was 5 gal jerry jug spare.

      Mike Rybas That's good information. I was wondering too. Great videos Mike. Not sure being barefoot is a good idea. I noticed a scar on your ankle with previous surgery stitches and a new cut as well when you were using the drill.

    • @sailen2
      @sailen2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, I'll check out Instagram. I just sent you a friend request on fb too. I'm in the middle of refitting a Kaiser Gale Force 34 that I bought last June. Great boat that has one crossing under its belt already. I could go as early as June '16 but no later than '18 (probably closer to '18!)

    what kind of mounts did you use for the different shots? great video by the way

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. The only mount I used was one of the 'flex pod' contraptions than have the legs that bend to any position. They're really useful on a boat because you have a level camera no matter what the angle of heel.

    • @jenserawesome
      @jenserawesome 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      really? thats amazing versatile. but thanks for the quick answer :)

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jenserawesome Oh I forgot.......I have a telescoping boat hook pole. The hook broke off one day and I epoxied a go pro mount on the end. The pole extends from about 3' to 8'. Its good for getting 'aerial shots' as well as sticking into the water to get shots of dolphins!

      Classic Bob Perry boat. Very nice. Whats her top speed and point of sail?

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kamau Iandiataiyero Top speed is low 8 knotish. But most of the time she sails between 5-7 knots (any slower and I usually start the engine). Pointing much higher than 40 deg apparent is no good.
