      I found the music very distracting too. Cool vid otherwise. I only follow solo sailors now...not interested in fake "WE ALMOST SANK OUR BOAT!!!!!!" BS.

    43 years ago this voyage was far more dangerous. Then there were no weather faxes, weather forecasts were unreliable, and you didn't know where you were, due to the lack of GPS. The voyage nearly killed us, and it did kill the friend I towed out of harbor.

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, sails are up as long as there is wind. Autopilot or windvane does 99% of the steering.

  • @cvcoco
    @cvcoco 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Tour of the boat would have been nice, and your thoughts about how it handled, if you had a preference for that keel design, etc. Also, whats the camera you were using? And for underwater shots its dragged at the end of a stick? If you sailed alone, who were the people who suddenly appeared for dinner?

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The boat was solid and easy to sail single handed. I don't have a lot of experience sailing other boats, so don't have good references for comparison. Cameras were a Gopro, entry level Nikon DSLR (forget the model), and I-pad. The underwater shots were a GoPro mounted to a telescoping boat hook pole.
      The sudden appearance of people was when I anchored at Minerva Reef and met up with friends aboard SV Cavalo: facebook.com/cavaloatsea/ I had a bunch of diving for lobster and kiteboarding footage from Minerva, but the GoPro took a shit and lost all the video :(

      I'm also into sailing (thanks to surfing). Got me a nice 27 foot coastal cruiser and I've been sailing a bunch. After watching this video I think I have found the right boat to take me to Indonesia ;) reall dig your boat. great job editing the videos man, good sound. Fair winds bro.

  • @DhulstDirk
    @DhulstDirk 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would imagine this sounds like a stupid question: How do you sleep? Do you leave the boat on auto pilot and keep the sails up, or do you pull everything down and simply let the boat drift in the ocean currents. Sleeping alone in a boat in the open sea with zero situational awareness would scare the hell out of me.

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Dirk Dhulst The boat can steers itself with either an electronic autopilot or wind/water powered self steering wind vane. I take short naps throughout the day and night. When I'm close to obstructions or areas of traffic, I set an alarm for every 30mins.

And to be single handing But, hey it's nice to have the space! Anyway keep enjoying the life, and be safe! Maybe we'll cross paths someday!

  • @ufozencom

    Awesome man... so competent. Fearless. Love it. I'm not so sure I'd jump out of a perfectly good boat to go spearfishing when nobody is topside. I think that would take some getting used to. Hell, just going out of sight of land would take a major change of mindset in this landlubber. Love the video. Will subscribe now. Cheers from Thailand!

    mike i give your sailing skills a C , I should know I sail in the great lakes
    usually max 1 ft seas and never more than 10 miles or I get scared and call the coast
    guard . I f you ever want a real sailor to show you the ropes drop me a message.

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess a 'C' is still a passing grade! I didn't grow up sailing or ever take lessons, so some of my techniques might be a bit DIY.

    • @sailwest6462
      @sailwest6462  8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +bby bby! Thanks for your concern. I realize it comes off as a bit reckless to single hand without using a safety harness at all times on deck. I always have one handy incase I feel the conditions call for wearing a harness. The rest of the time I am constantly thinking "if you fall off, you're dead."

    What boat are you saving for? Tashiba 40 is a pretty nice boat, just curious why you sold it?

    Was this boat yours or were you delivering it? If it was yours why did you sell it and what boat are you saving up for?
