I've always been prone to nosebleeds since I was a little kid, I've NEVER tilted my head back because I would taste the blood, so I automatically tilted forward to stop it, I never understood why people did that, it's so bizarre to me

I have severe allergy and often sneeze so violently a few times in the row my nose bleeds, so i can tell you - you can get used to drinking your own blood. Gross, but i can cope. I prefer to tilt back, because cleaning out blood gets very annoying, also blood can dry up and clot out your nose, so you get blood boogers and they are even groser than usuall ones.
Well, i grew up with abusive parents who would get very angry if i got blood on anything, so that's the main reason. Now that i think about it, it's crazy how they blamed me even if my nose bled when i was sleeping and couldn't possibly prevent the blood from getting onto the pillow. Needless to say, my allergy was not treated and was in fact denied and somehow blamed on me at the same time.

I get nose bleeds sometimes, but its like really really far back, sometimes I can feel like the holes that my nose use in the back of my throat.
My bleeds occur that far back so it runs down my throat, sometimes I can taste my own blood, so I dont have a choice. Never made me sick though, but my throat feels like its on fire sometimes, and burns, and hurts, water sometimes help.

Had surgery in my nose to remove a cyst. A bit into recovery I started getting nose bleeds. No big deal at first, but then they got more frequent and lasted longer. My mom kept ignoring me mentioning that it was probably best to see the medic since at that point they lasted 15 minutes or more, instead she blamed me for not tilting my head back and for getting up to spit the blood that would start to go back to the throat. One day I got a bleed that lasted about 2 hours, obviously I spat a lot of blood but even then swallowed a lot too since some would coagulate in the nose before coming loose and going down the throat (only managed to direct one such clot to my mouth to spit out). My dad was the one that yielded on taking me to the medic the next day.
Surprise surprise! Surgery in the nose can dry it out and cause nosebleeds. The medic cauterized the most troublesome spot(s), mentioning that they were in fact bleeding significantly. He informed my dad I was doing the right thing by not tilting back and spitting out what I could that did make it to the throat/mouth. I was given treatment to help with the dryness and informed to keep an eye for bleeds that lasted more than 15 minutes.... my mom apologized after my dad filled her in..... and yes, I was pretty damn nauseous that day thanks to the large amount of blood I managed to swallow the day before (it was still quite red when it exited out the other end).

    • @lindag277
      @lindag277 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It’s NOT normal for you to bleed that long and “dryness” after surgery is a very superficial response. You might want to see a hematologist so they can check for a bleeding disorder.

    • @elizaalmabuena
      @elizaalmabuena 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@lindag277 Relax, that was years ago. After I started the treatment for dryness it settled pretty much immediately. While the medic (same surgeon that treated me) did cauterize a tiny spot that upon inspection seemed to display profuse bleeding, the very occasional nosebleeds before (or after) that situation hardly even last a minute.

I used to get lots of nosebleeds when I was little, and sometimes they would last for 10+ minutes. I would tilt my head back even as my parents told me to tilt it forward, because I didn't want more blood to get out. Then I'd start to panic when it didn't stop fast enough and toss my head around, naturally making it worse. I never ended up in the ER though, because eventually my parents would get me to still and lean my head forward. A formative memory in my life is the first time I dealt with a nosebleed without my parents' help. It was one of the first times I dealt with something scary all on my own.

This was my childhood. The kicker, the CAUSE of my nosebleeds was the stress that my mother was causing me, so, the more that she instructed me on how to stop them, the worse they got. She had a bag of rags for me to bleed into. The only time that someone successfully stopped one when I was a child was when I got one on a ferry and a passing nurse insisted that 1) my mother immediately LEAVE the room, and 2) made me lean forward and hold my nose. Stopped practically immediately. They stopped completely a month after I left home. The day that I returned home, I had a 6 hour nosebleed.

I am quite prone to nosebleeds, so I’ve gotten pretty good at stopping them, but I’ve heard all the misinformation from family, friends, and even school nurses when I was younger. Tilting your head back is a common one, but people also tell you to pinch at the very top of your nose which does nothing to stop a nosebleed. Now-a days, I keep a go-kit in my backpack with tissues, Afrin, and a garbage bag, which has saved me on airplanes, while driving, while biking, and even during a final exam.

This is one of my favourite ones you’ve done. I was in the ER for a raging kidney infection and elevated liver enzymes and they gave me a decoagulant (because of the liver stuff). Nose was already dry so I had a big nose bleed pretty soon. I was given a clip for my nose and the identical twin of someone I worked with little bit chastised me for not holding it tight enough. It ended up stopping, of course and she found me a seat where they give people IVs but in a comfy chair instead of putting me back in the waiting room. I hated being in the hospital (of course) but she made it a whole much better than it could have been (I have chronic pain and the waiting room chairs give me huge pain)

He also gave some nose plugger clips and told me to STOP tilting my head back because my dad was mistaken in advising that. The worst nosebleed I ever had was driving home one night in a very cold Chicago winter. I rubbed my nose and felt fluid running down my face. Since it was dark and I was wearing a heavy coat and gloves, I figured it was just a runny nose and didn’t give it a second thought. When I got home I went to the bathroom to get a tissue and in the mirror I saw that my coat and gloves were covered in the blood gushing out my nose. Thankfully I didn’t run into anyone from my condo, and no one noticed the drips of blood in the snow leading back to my car or I might have been a suspect in a murder investigation.
And yes, I did remember to tilt my head forward.

I've had nosebleeds ranging from really bad to a couple drops for as long as I can remember. They're at their worst during the summer. The advice from the one time my mother took me to the hospital, after having two hour long ones within a couple hours of each other, was to pinch my nose, lean forward, and wait 45 minutes. If the bleeding has stopped leave the clot for 10-20 minutes then blow it out. If after 45 minutes I'm still bleeding it's time to go to the emergency room again. Luckily it never came to that. I still follow this advice and still actively have to tell people, no the doctor said don't tilt your head back. I ignore most nosebleed advice these days. The only bit I really have taken to heart was also implementing a cool pack to force the blood vessels to restrict.

Believe it or not...tampons are very helpful during a nosebleed. Just take the cotton part and put it in your nose and leave it there until it stops. They are very absorbent and you have your hands free to keep doing whatever you were doing. You might look silly, but at least you're not bleeding everywhere.

I had severe nosebleeds as a kid very often, causing me to regularly seek medical attention. One day the doctor just burned my nostril to make it stop, and it worked. The frequency of nosebleeds went down like 90% and now as an adult I have a nosebleed maybe twice a year. The burning procedure really helps, it makes the capillaries that tend to break and cause the nosebleed to shrivel up and get scar tissue over them.

When I was a kid I suffered from random nosebleeds. I didn't even notice it, most of the time I thought it was my nose being runny, I'd wipe it with my hand and it would come away full of blood.
When my nose bled, it bled A LOT! More than a few times I'd come home from school with a bloodied up shirt. My mom never freaked out that I'd been in fight or anything, she knew it was just another nose bleed day.
When a nose bleed would happen at school, my teacher would send me down to the school nurse. The nurse showed me how to pinch it (and lean forward) until it stopped. My teacher still sent me there every time I got one and the nurse would tell me every time that I knew how to stop it, I didn't need to come there. I told this to my teacher but he still made me go. It was some years later I realized that of course he made me go, even if I knew what to do to stop it, there's 30 kids in the class, are they going to pay attention to the teacher showing us how to multiply fractions or watch the one kid with a river of blood coming out of his nose?
Eventually my mom took me to an ENT doctor. He did the burn thing. Cauterized the membrane. Was a fifteen minute appointment, 1 time...I never had a nose bleed again.

PSA: Easiest way to immediately stop a bloody nose. I took a local plants herbalism class and got a scary-bad, gushing bloody nose the next morning. Desperate, I remembered the teacher saying that the sage we'd picked stops bleeding. I stuck a leaf in my mouth thinking I'd chew it up and shove the spit poultice up my nose, but the the bleeding stopped instantaneously the moment I put it in my mouth.
We took home black sage, but mountain sage or white sage would do the same thing. I don't think you'll get the same effect with sage from the spice aisle. Also, it has other effects, like drying up breast milk, so you should learn about things before you use them.

I got nosebleeds every day most of my childhood. I hated all the grown-ups giving me conflicting advice. The only thing that worked was time to clot and lots of tissues. Cauterization worked for 2 weeks max. I finally had an operation at 17 to build up the cartilage, and almost never have had a nosebleed since.

I was taught to lean forward but also to pinch the nose higher- where the cartilage is so that the blood vessels can be pressed up against the cartilage. Not sure if it matters where the nose is pinched. I've never had a nosebleed.

Iv got a tip too, take a paper towel, roll it up into a round cone shape small enough to fit in your nose, wet it, squeeze out the excess water, and stick it up the bleeding nostril in a swirling motion, make sure there’s enough towel so you can grab it, and leave it in the for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how long it takes for the blood too stop.

I used to get nosebleeds a lot as a kid. Was told by doctors to pinch the bridge of my nose and tilt my head back, but did nothing. Eventually worked out if I blocked the nostril with some tissue I could wait for it to fill with blood. The blood would clot, stopping the bleeding and then I could suck or blow the clot out. Fun times just hocking a big ball of congealed blood to freak people out :p

i used to get tons of nosebleeds due to the hot weather in the summer. i had a really bad one riding my bike back from work one day, it lasted the whole ride home and it was dripping like mad. stuffed a tissue up there and when i got home i put an ice pack on my neck as well as closing it and leaning forward. 2 minutes later it stopped. to this day i still hate the heat as it makes me sick and my nose bleeds easily due to it.

    1) put tissue in bleeding nose

Had my worst nose bleed my senior year of high school. Always got them growing up and would just pop a tampon in knowing that it would stop within 10 minutes or so. This one i bled through 2 tampons with no signs of slowing down. 50ish minutes later I decided it was bad enough to go to the ED for. Got there, they burned it and it stopped it enough for that night. Horrible smell but it was worth it to stop bleeding

  • @Freya778

To help stop a nosebleed if it is severe, while you have your head tilted forward and you are pinching your nose, you could put something frozen on your nose to stop the bleeding. The cold will constrict the blood vessels and will make the bleeding stop quicker. You can use an ice cube in a tissue, some frozen veggies in a bag, a packaged popsicle, etc. You may not need to do this for more than a minute or a few minutes for this to work.

So I've had trouble with nosebleeds my whole life. I've had it cautarized twice, once chemically and the second with the old-school hot rod. Didn't cure it either time. Upon further examination, the doctor says I got a bunch of little guys right on the surface that crack anytime it gets dry. Even moisturizer only goes so far, and I have horrible, hours-long nosebleeds during summer or dry winters.
    Biology can SUCK sometimes.

My best recommendation is to put some paper tissue or a piece from a cotton ball under your tongue. The body tires to get rid off it via salvia. And for the production of this extra salvia blood from the surrounding area us needed including you nose.
It's a very common technique used ar sports. At least here in Germany.
I'm not 100% confident about the explaining, but it works. 😁

A cold pack on the back of the neck can sometimes help slow/stop a nose bleed. My maternal grandfather (a doctor) taught my mother that trick and she passed it on to me. My grandfather couldn't tell her why it worked, but it does help (at least in my experience).

My son's ADHD meds cause really bad nosebleeds. We didn't realize it was the meds so we ended up seeing his pediatrician, days off from school, CPS -getting a call from an effing doctor that felt it must be some kind of abuse, then his psychiatrist, then an ENT, then a neurologist, then a geneticist, then.......... another mom in a support group told me her son got bad nosebleeds from his meds.... I mentioned this to the psychiatrist (after almost a full year of visiting these dr.s over and over and tests and exams and blood work and MONEY and STRESSSSSSSSSS) he agreed and we took him off the meds and no more nosebleeds...
My son and I are unmedicated. We can get a bit squirrely and we got on each others nerve from time to time, but the side effects were not worth it for us. I have ADHD and Autism too. (he's 21 and I'm 52)

You can plug your nostrils with rolled up tissue or paper towel and if you go through two for a nostril then pinch it for a few min. I figure you’d want to soak up some of the excess so it doesn’t pool up and make you choke on it.

Worked as a pre-k TA for years. Didn't know until the first year (and many visits to the nurses office for a child with frequent nosebleeds) that you're supposed to tilt the head forward. Spent years trying to teach all my kids to tilt their heads forward, breathe through their mouth and helping them not freak out at the blood. (there were many days the nurse was very busy and overworked..) The ones with frequent nosebleeds over the years became almost stoic about it in the process. ^_^"

My son is prone to nose bleeds. Some lasting more than 15min at a time. Always had him leaning forward pinching his nose. We have also used affrin to help with constricting the blood vessels in his nose during the longer nose bleeds. A few of them we had to take trips to the ED as they were lasting too long and he was bleeding too much. To date he has had two nasal ablations to deal with veins that were too close to the surface and were the cause of his nose bleeds. It can be scary but staying as clam as possible is key especially for younger kids as they will pick up on that vibe from you as the parent and learn what to do.

Also, don't forget to pinch the nose vein really hard aswell!! If it's really bad, put ice on the back of your neck. My mom's a nurse who was so sickly as a child that she was frequently getting her nose caulderized. She even freaked out the ER nurse because she started crying blood after plugging her nose for so long 😅 my whole family gets spontaneous nosebleeds, but nothing like what my mom had to go through

Not that you need my input, but as 22M whose had consistent nose bleeds due to dry nose for his whole entire life, can confirm the advise. But I would like to add that if you can't hold your nose long enough (I've had a few that have lasted an hour and got light headed) you can buy nose clamps for this specific purpose at the dollar store (at least the dollar stores near me in Canada).

    • @taylorbritt499

You can also shove a tampon up your nose and just leave it there to soak up the blood. They're super absorbent (I mean, look at what they're made for lol) so it should last long enough for the bleeding to stop. And if you bleed through a whole tampon and it still hasn't stopped, that's probably a good sign to go to the ER 😅

Nasty, but was always handy when i had no hankies.

When my mom had a nose bleed that wouldn’t stop after a really nasty fall they packed it with gauze and kept her for like a week. She had cancer and needed a transfusion.
Basically, she tripped on the edge of a small stage and landed on her nose. They tried to stop it for an hour then called an ambulance who tried to stop it for a while before bringing her up and they tried and ran out of towels and cloths because she just wouldn’t stop bleeding. I walked in there and it looked like a murder scene.
It was a bad day overall… I almost fit in as I worked home care that day and my client’s skin ripped while trying to help her put her shirt on. While I was trying to patch her up I got blood all over my shirt so I had to go home because I was worried about going into the ER with blood on my scrub shirt. I was already getting mistaken as a nurse without looking like I’d just dealt with a bleeding patient. So I had a bit of a panic attack in between work and getting home because I was so worried about my mom and just wanted to see her.

I got a lot of nose bleeds after I got my tonsils removed as a kid. I just had to blow my nose to hard, sneeze or fall and it would start to bleed.
My mother told me the same thing "tilt your head back and put a wet cloth on your neck" and I would throw up from all the blood I swallowed, which made my nose start bleeding all over again (if it even had stopped at this point).
After I got my second child, who also tends to get nose bleeds easily, I learned how to properly treat nose bleeds and it's really different from what I learned as a child, but also way more effective!
