    It's an interesting take on an established technique, and a good way to save on resin costs - what you could've done was at each end of the slab with your router cut an inch-wide channel the depth of the slab so that the resin fills the full depth of that gap giving the effect from the sides that the river was filling the full height :)

    • @jirislovencik3936
      @jirislovencik3936 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      my thought exactly! this project can really save serious $$ in resin doing it this way...

    • @chadashton7029
      @chadashton7029 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@jirislovencik3936 Depends though...if you need a table that's wider than the slab...you're limited. By cutting a slab in half, you can increase total width of the table by the width of your epoxy river. But yeah...for narrower projects...this is definitely a great way to go.

      I agree with tom ,,I’m doing a table now the same way but I’m turning the table up on it’s sideds once each piece of epoxy has set and routering out the sides so it looks like the resin is running the whole way through the slab,but still a good idea though looks nice ,
      Good shout tom ,

      @@jirislovencik3936 been alot of issues I have seen done with tables when there is more/less wood exposed on the top than on the bottom, seen 5k tables been tossed out cuz of it. Pretty risky to do it this way, but it otherwise would be a great idea

      I did this same thing a while ago on a live edge oak slab. I poured it so the river looked like it went all the way through and the other side didn’t matter because I did a water fall edge. Saved a lot of money on epoxy and love having the river and the live edge still.

  • @elyseruben4143

    I have done a couple tables with this method but I do go all the way thru at the ends to make it look like the epoxy is all the way through the slab. You have to make sure that you build a dam at the end very tightly so your epoxy doesn't seep thru!. Either hot glue a piece of acrylic or secure a block of wood even with your slab depth to block off the epoxy. Saves alot of money not using all that epoxy! How about 4 to 6 liters instead of 40 to 60 liters!

    • @dalhousieDream

    What about Sanding and and polishing the top Instead of last coat of resin. ?

  • @elyseruben4143
    @elyseruben4143 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    you also should not skip grits when sanding if you want an absolutely smooth finish especially on the epoxy! Start at 80, 100, 120, 150,180, 220 up to 300 Usually this is enough to give a ultra smooth finish before your topcoat. This will also insure that all the little swirls will sand out. This if you are using an oil finish of some brand like Odies Oil , Rubio or others. If you are going to use a clear epoxy finish then these steps might not be quite as necessary. I guess it depends on how much of a perfectionist you are.

    • @randy1ization
      @randy1ization 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      seems like if it was sanded too smooth the resin would have nothing to adhere to , it has to be rough enough to get a bite. my question though is instead of routing it smooth, why not just use the resin to achieve smoothness, on a level surface it should self level.

    • @themoops.
      @themoops. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      rubio monocoat suggest not going past 120 grit

    • @homecompter5646
      @homecompter5646 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree why not just smooth the top coat

    • @markolmstead4709
      @markolmstead4709 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a lot of sanding. I’ve never had a problem if I go up no more than 50% of the previous grit. So starting at 80 the next would be 120, then 180, then 220, then 300. Saves a lot of time and end result is the same.

    I like this method because it should be stronger than if you cut the river all the way through and join the sides with epoxy. You could stairstep the river with the router to save even more epoxy and give the river a natural look. Make shallow passes on the sides of the river and deeper passes as you get closer to the middle of the river (the deepest part).

    So stunning! Wow!
    I could be completely wrong, as I’m waiting for the delivery of resin, for my first project so I’ve just been watching several hundred videos, trying to learn as much as possible. So, here’s my question:
    Can you use different types of resins, on the same piece? Say the river portion needs a more expensive resin. Can you use a less expensive resin over the entire piece, if you’re only doing a thin coat?
    I may have misunderstood, so please forgive any dumb questions. I’ve noticed when re-watching videos, new pieces of information are acquired. (Bc let’s be honest, there’s a lot to learn.)
    TIA
