    35-year teacher here. Listen to me, O ye unbelievers: this is 100,000% painfully accurately true. I have sat through hundreds of exactly this. And oh yes, they DO email the whole thing to you afterwards. But there's an "energy" (dare I say a SYNERGY?) when we all get together as a "family" that is what administrators chiefly feed on, like vampires at a blood bank.

    We actually had a live advertisement by a group that "provided lunch" for us one time. They showed up 15 minutes late for our lunch block, regaled us with their 10-minute spiel and pamphlets, then dropped 3 pizzas (cut into 12 slices each instead of the usual 8) and a single bunch of bananas on the table for the group of 30 of us. I'm a veteran teacher, so I knew better and packed my own lunch that day.

    Almost 10 years ago, we had a common core expert to train our English department. She told us instead of READING "Of Mice and Men", why not skip the 100 page, easy-to-read, beloved novel that the kids always love (and actually get excited about), and instead just ask the kids if it is ever ok to kill your best friend. We all stared at each other across the table, all thinking the same thing at the same time. The kids would say, "No," and the discussion would be over.

    • @nerowolfe736
      @nerowolfe736 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think I can beat that: a curriculum specialist once suggested to our English department that, instead of everyone reading the novel at once, how cool would it be to divide the class into groups, assign each group only a PART of the novel, and then they could teach each other! So efficient! This would work eqally well for family vacations: "O.K., gang, here we are in New York city! The Big Apple! Johnny, you're going to Yankee Stadium; Susie, I've got you slated for Times Square; Mom's gonna hit up the Empire State building; and I'll cover Madison Square Garden. We'll meet back at the hotel tonight and compare notes!"

      I always did other work during PD, like lesson plans, grading papers, report cards, etc. Once, I planned an entire Social Studies unit on NYC, complete with 20 lessons, for my K-2 inclusion class. Worse PD ever came for “free” with the purchase of a smart board. The instructor spent half an hour on how (and how not) to clean it. NEVER use cloth, towels, or cleaners that can scratch. Specifically, no Brillo Pads, Scotch Brite, or Ajax! He made jokes disparaging Baby Boomers as stupid imbeciles, not a good strategy when the principal and 70% of the staff and faculty were of this generation. He also threw in a few snide remarks about the elderly, needing a full class period to get up one flight of stairs with a walker, again, a bad move. Maybe he didn’t notice the petite, white-haired Irish lady with a walker? Mrs. Bennet, age 90, our volunteer librarian, storyteller, teacher assistant, and sage. After the presentation was over, she pulled him aside into a small room used for an office, and was seen talking with him for about 20 minutes. On the evaluation sheet we had to fill out, I honestly told what I’d taken away from the PD.
      1. Smart boards are just the latest in technology toys. By the time I figure out how to use it well enough to incorporate it into my lessons, it’ll be as outmoded as a slide rule.
      2. Do not use Brillo, Scotch Brite, or Ajax to clean the Smart board.
      3. If called upon to give a class to fellow teachers, consider who I’m talking to before opening my mouth.

    If it were Dallas ISD, there would also be something like, "Yes, we know you've just gotten used to the math curriculum that we forced on you two years ago, but this new and improved one that is totally different than anything you've ever seen before and will confuse the heck out of both teachers and students is guaranteed to raise standardized test grades."
    At least, back when I was teaching there...

    • @mariekatherine5238
      @mariekatherine5238 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can relate after 40+ years in the classroom! I’ve gotten very good at doing lesson plans or grading papers during these, “new, improved, better, and brighter,” curricula that we “must use next year” PD spiels, feigning interest and attention. Once in the classroom, I add the materials to the others on my shelf labeled BC, (bull crap), and continue to teach the way I’ve always done.

    I’m a high school student, and the principal of my school was also my math teacher last year. I normally don’t judge harshly, but he was a TERRIBLE teacher- a near-replica of the guy in the video. It just dawned on me that because he was the principal, he was probably also the guy leading professional development in my school, so all the other teachers had to deal with him the exact same way I did. Suddenly I feel very bad for all of them.

    I have an idea how to increase teacher pay by having students whose parents with high paying jobs to "ask and pay extra attention " the whole time of schools out in order for the parents to really feel and doing acts of appreciation for teachers.Wink,wink

      Why the fuck would you need to be a teacher to like the video like as if this video is bad, it's showing how they practice, also yeah of course you're not a kid, you're probably 4th-5th grade
