What's really sad is that the Met Gala is actually for funding historical fashion preservation because the fashion arm of the Met has to get funds each year to keep going. It's relevant work that has historical and cultural importance, as well as celebrating an art form that we all engage with every day, ie. fashion. They've relied on the celebrity angle so people donate, but the problem is that it's become so about that that most people have no idea what it actually funds and many celebrities use it for less than great purposes. It's one of the reasons that Kim wearing the Monroe dress was extremely insulting both artistically and historically.

I remember reading an article stating the Kardashians had killed celebrity culture. It took a while but it’s true. We watched a talentless family rise to the top in dubious ways and finally understood that this was the path most “real celebrities” had taken.

I think social media killed celebrity culture. Reasons are 1) it exposes a lot of them because they do a lot of dumb stuff online where as before social media everything was filtered by the media and 2) it created an entire culture of fame hungry influencers that have cheapened the meaning of what it means to be famous because most of them also have no talent just like the Kardashians.

I think the K's just woke a few people up because the sham was so blatant. Many neurodivergent people don't understand the worship of anyone - celebrity, royalty, religious figures etc - it makes absolutely no sense, it's all pretend titles, costume and construct. So we do a lot of observing of human behaviour.
I honestly think the celebrity backlash is due to the economic and sociopolitical environment, our loss of hope and fear of the future. If society was to recover it's equilibrium, the worship would be back as well. But that's just a personal opinion.

More like stifled. Progress could have begun earlier, perhaps even decades ago, but it has been thwarted at every turn by La-La-Land’s cronies in the legal system, press, mayoral offices, state and federal governments. And this massive influence is only possible because they have deep pockets. What’s more, the extent of it is so entrenched that removing all of it will be no simple task.
That’s not to say that there is no hope. The fact that people are waking up to it is a good sign. However, cutting out this rot in its entirety is going to be a long uphill battle.

Oprah just seems to espouse some pseudo spirituality or pseudo psychology that lacks depth, is shallow and superficial, and promotes kind of a materialistic, consumerist view of life. There are a few celebrities out there who donate much of their wealth to worthy causes, and volunteer their time, energy and talent to help people, and don't forget where they came from and their fans, and show empathy and concern in various ways toward the working class and those who are struggling. Plus, half the designer items are sold at designer prices while being made in a sweatshop in a poor country by workers who work in inhumane conditions and are paid next to nothing. That's how they are getting richer. The higher-ups have stagnated the salary rise for everyone except the CEOs and board members of companies. This is forcing the majority to buy stuff like homes, cars, etc., in bank installments, which cost double the actual price. It's appalling and disgusting. Then they're giving holier-than-thou advice about environmental destruction, oh we are not providing a phone charger because it'll make the box smaller and less weighty; what do you mean? Buying the charger which comes in a different box, and extra packing, is that not "harming the environment"??? And don't even get me started on planned obsolescence. Shoddy quality garments, gadgets, and even houses, forcing you to be in a cycle of buying constantly. Boycotting consumption culture and celebrity culture is a good start. True, but my understanding is that it's generally not the celebrities themselves who pay the ticket price. They are invited by different fashion brands to display their designs.
I think it's important to note that the Met Gala is a charity event. It didn't always involve celebrities, that is a fairly recent development.
It's a highly publicized event and the optics around the timing were horrible, but it's not the most egregious example, in my opinion. It's just possibly one of the most mediatized.
And while we direct most of our ire toward influencers/celebrities, we pay much less attention to the billionaires who do far greater damage (very few artists have that kind of wealth). The ones that can afford to keep a low profile (while maintaining the same standard of living).

I feel like the main difference between old Hollywood & new Hollywood is that the standard has gone WAY down for the way they find “talent”. A lot of the people in celeb culture have benefitted from nepotism (for better but mostly WORST I’d argue) or gotten famous on a fluke such as a weird meme or clickbait music, and lack the perspective of the every day person in which they try to sell to constantly. I feel like people have finally woken up to this, and aren’t really buying what they sell anymore. The gap between what it’s like for working people & what they THINK working people go through daily is honestly a joke- given Kim Kardashian’s statement about “no one wanting to work these days”. Yeah, Kim K- easy for you to say when you have had everything planned out, and served to you on a platter.

I remember watching The Truman Show when it came out. I felt like the message to the viewer was: “Who are the bad guys here? The people making a show about a person who doesn’t even know he’s in a show or US the viewers who are eating this up on a daily basis, making it a global phenomenon”? And then….social media arrived. And it seems as if everyone took the absolute wrong answer from that question and are now all about their own shameless self promotion and adoration of people they will never meet. And the celebrity is just that, on an epic scale. Constantly needing to seek out the validation of all others, regardless of what it costs them on a personal level. Do that long enough and nobody will convince me that you will eventually be so far outside of reliability to most people, you might as well come from another planet. Which brings the question back to us. The one’s allowing them to be a “celebrity” by following and or endorsing their nonsense.
As Obi Wan Kenobi once said: “Who’s more foolish? The Fool….or the fool who follows him”?
