  • In a shocking turn of events, news broke yesterday that Kevin Durant has requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. The former MVP and his business manager are working with the Nets front office to find a new team to take him on, despite everyone getting the feeling things would settle down in Brooklyn after Kyrie Irving made the decision to opt in to another season. Nick Wright and Chris Broussard share their thoughts in this development, and what this means for the future of the Nets.

odd how kyrie opts in, like a day later KD wants traded 🤔 KD feeling disrespected over kyries deal or lack there of and asking to be traded away from him makes no sense to me, the chances they both get on the same team again thru trades gotta be small yet KDs camp claims he still wants to play with him, then he could just play next year in brooklyn and see what happens after that if it was truly the case. KD is done with kyrie and itll be hard to convince me otherwise.

It sounds like Kyrie told KD he's done with the Nets after his one year contract this year. KD is asking to be traded now & then next year Kyrie will be a free agent so he can go play wherever KD ends up. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Nick hit on it, KD & Kyrie feel disrespected by the Nets (even though they shouldn't because the Nets did nothing wrong) so they're done with them.

Dude is unreliable as they come. Yes he's super talented but his talent doesn't translate to winning basketball. He's a great iso scorer but not a great team player. Everywhere he's went after leaving Lebron has been a failure.
So if I'm the Nets, I don't want Kyrie but that also comes with losing KD which sucks. At the end of the day, KD is one of the best to ever do it, but he's not a leader & won't lead his own team to a chip. He needs to go "ride someone else's bus" as Sir Charles would say lol. The Nets are probably better off without both of them & getting pieces to start fresh.

This is a huge Win for Sean Marks and Joe Tsai.
For one, the timing of the announcement heavily skewed in Net's favor. If KD made the decision to announce then he just trapped himself in a losing hole. I would totally say that Joe Tsai was the one who wanted to trade KD, because he forsee the power KD is developing. He could have called KD to his office, discussed the teams direction and reach a mutual decision to trade him. The detail falls in "Why Now"?
Well, it all started with the O'neele trade. I'd be surprised that when Jazz approached the Nets for the salary dump, Sean Mark and Joe Tsai did not bother to ask couple questions before agreeing to the deal.
But why would the Jazz reveal info to the Nets you wonder? Oh wait, who did the Jazz HC Will Hardy worked for in San Antonio? That's right, Sean Marks, the GM of the Brooklyn Nets.
When teams make salary dump moves ahead of a major deal, they tend to work with someone they have a personal relationship with. This gives us the answer to why the Nets is willing to take O'neele, who basically contribute to nothing they needed, for a draft pick. The pick was a trade for INFORMATION.
Now armed with this news, Sean Marks and Joe Tsai realizes when the Jazz news broke, the trade value for KD will skyrocket given what Jazz got in return for Golbert. So they induced KD to agree to a trade (rmb KD has a no-trade clause), and releases that news just One day before the Jazz trade. It matters because if they release AFTER the Jazz trade, the Nets would be seen as Asset Chasing and desperate, like buying a stock when it jumps instead of buying a dip. So the Nets released the KD request and the O'neale trade within minutes.
The Nets front office played this hand just so perfectly. Not only they have a benchmark for minimum asset in return, they also played KD and Kyrie against eachother in the public eyes.
Now KD might not get moved this year, but it reduces his influence power significantly. Because not being able to be traded tells you the value of player has dwindled, it will keep KD grounded for the time to come. If they move him that'll be also win for the Nets, because of the significant asset they asking for. They will almost certainly move Kyrie, for the Nets Kyrie is a write-off already.
Edit: With all the "What KD said to Joe and Sean" news, one has to rmb. Information are divulged to the media in a way that serves the source the most. Nets certainly want maximum denialbility on it, but one thing gave it away. You don't "Work with" KD 's business manager to find a trade if the Nets didn't want to move him, after giving him a 4 year deal. The fact is that the Nets cannot trade KD without his consent, so this is a mutual decision, if not a Nets decision.
