There were two explorers who first stumbled across the New York lands but can’t be credited with doing much upon their arrival. In 1524, a French-employed Italian explorer by the name of Giovanni da Verrazzano was sailing along the Atlantic when he found himself in what we know today as the New York Harbor and eventually modern-day Manhattan. He wrote of his exploration but did little more in the way of colonizing New York than that, and the same could be said for Jacques Cartier, a French explorer who made similar explorations in 1535. It wasn’t until another man, Henry Hudson under the employment of the Dutch East India Company, made his way to New York in 1609, that colonization became an intention.

To answer the question in this vid, without New York, America would just be southern Canada...!!!
As somebody from New York, this video was done very well! I couldn’t stop looking at how far south Albany was depicted compared to its actual location though 😂
It’s actually pretty spot on the latitude of Albany is only slightly north of Boston. Perhaps even by less than 1 degree.
Ikr that made me laugh, also a New Yorker. But sadly he got our history way wrong. More wrong than right. Research the 5 points, the Iroquois way of life, the Dutch purchasing Manhattan from the Manhattan tribe who were not Algonquin like New England tribes, I couldn't finish the video because of how wrong it was but at the same time I'm happy that people want to learn our history 😊

I really enjoyed this video! Two things about the state I'd love to see covered in a part 2 or a future video: (1) The Erie Canal - this was arguably a more important piece of infrastructure for the United States than the Panama Canal, and was responsible not only for developing the western part of the state, but basically the entire Midwest. The canal was a big part of why NYC was so wealthy... it was a gateway to the interior. Without it, you can't get ships from the Atlantic into Lake Erie and beyond... you'd hit Niagara Falls between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The canal got around that issue. Speaking of... (2) New York State contains the oldest state park in the country... Niagara Falls State Park!
The other big winner from the Erie Canal was Chicago.
True, and Philadelphia never forgave New York City for the Erie Canal. Philly was supposed to be the future powerhouse city. New York and Boston were already old, dirty, and unfashionable.
Some interesting NY notes
1. NYC boroughs such as the Bronx and Queens are some of the most culturally diverse regions in the world
2. NYC and it’s boroughs are some of the most densely populated areas and some of the most expensive areas to live on the world
3. NYC is an international hub of the world economy. Hosting giant international corporations and their headquarters. Almost all of the finically exchanges between countries pass through NYC
4. New York State has a lot of infrastructure options with highways, railways, canalways, and airports. Most second, third, etc. generation New Yorkers have family all across New York State from Buffalo to Yonkers that over time have spread all across the state
5. The migration of people across the state are very similar. With most of the settlers first being Dutch and British. Then overtime in the 19th century tons of German, Irish, Chinese, and West African migrants moved to New York. In the 20th and 21st century tons of immigrants from all over such as Southern Europeans, Jews, Eastern European, West Asian, Muslim, Western Africans, Eastern Africans Souther Africans, Caribbean, Central Americans, and Souther Americans have had an influx of migration in search of industrial or financial jobs. From Syracuse to Westchester you’ll find the same ethnic makeup. As these groups have all fled, left, or forced to leave their lands for hope of a better life in NY.
6. In more recent times New York is one of the most corrupt states. From the politician, to the mafia, to stock brokers, to unions. New York has a history of corrupt entities.
7. A lot of innovation occurred in New York and many major industries first started in New York. From air conditioners, to pizza, credit cards, bloody Mary’s and toilet paper all of these items were invented or created in NY
8. The Iroquois Confederacy in Upstate New York was a model for the founding fathers on how to govern the new 12 colonies
9. Niagara Falls is split between Canada and NY
10. Grand Island by the Niagara Falls tried to become a homeland for Jews but those plans never went in fruition.
11. The only successful Irish battle was the Fenian raids in Buffalo. When Irish Immigrants attacked British Canada in the name of Ireland.
12. New York State used to be the most populated U.S state. However in recent times New York’s population had been decreasing as more people are moving to states such as Florida, North Carolina, Texas, and Arizona. And NYs population has slowed down
13. Offshoring jobs hurt a lot of NY and the state hasn’t fully recovered. However NYC is the least affected city in NY as it has a very diverse portfolio of jobs
14. The UN is headquartered in NYC
15. Upstate Cities like Buffalo and Rochester to certain degrees get a lot of snow in the winter from the Great Lakes
16. New York State host the record for the most Presidents being born in the state.
17. Even though New York’s geography is very diverse NYS is very similar. Having tons of diverse cities with plenty of pretty downtowns, segregated neighborhoods, and wealthy suburbs.
18. Linguistically NYC and surrounding suburbs have one of the strongest English non-rhotic Accents
19. New York once claimed the state of Vermont however Vermont got its independence and would later become a state
20. New York’s economy used to be very reliant of the fur trade to North America. However overtime New York’s economy has diversified. With NYC being a major retail, financial, and luxury based economy. While Upstate New York is very retail, agricultural, and industrial oriented economy.
21. Some of the most famous shows in the world are set in New York City such as Seinfeld and Friends.

Nice overview. I couldn't help but notice that the map showed Albany as being a little north of NYC. In reality it is almost halfway up the easterly side of the state.
You misspelled the South Carolina town of Charleston. (The Spelling Pedant strikes again!)

New York is such a fascinating place with a very diverse geography and culture. I sometimes even compare it to a smaller version of the Union itself.
From vast fields to moutains, to multiethnic cities. From rust belt factories to religious sanctuaries. Amish and Evsngelicals in the countryside to Catholics in the cities.
I do enjoy my state.

As a curiosity, in the Metropolitan Museum of New York 🗽 is the choir screen from the Cathedral of my city (Valladolid, Spain 🇪🇸). In 1929, the religious of the Cathedral of Valladolid authorized the sale to the representative of William Randolph Hearst in Spain. The choir screen remained forgotten in a warehouse until the Hearst Foundation gave it to the Metropolitan Museum in 1956 and in 1957 it was permanently installed in the museum.

Dutch was a stable prestige language used by the old money bourgeoisie in NYC until WW1
Martin Van Buren was the only American president who did not speak English as his first language.spoke Dutch as his first language,
Theodore Roosevelt understood some of the Dutch language and taught songs in Dutch to his children and grandchildren
Although the English took NY from the Dutch, they never supplanted the Dutch value of tolerance and the Dutch desire to make money, values which still describe New Yorkers.

A good book on New York's Dutch origins is Russell Shorto's THE ISLAND AT THE CENTER OF THE WORLD.
Did you know that for almost half the time between 1881 and 1945, the USA had a president from New York state? (Arthur, Cleveland and the two Roosevelts.)
Very cool. But as a proud Ohio native, I want to share that we are second only to Virginia as the birthplace of the most presidents. VA: 8, OH: 7 (Grant, Hays, Garfield, Harrison, McKinley, Taft, and Harding) 🙂

Much love for our New York city brothers and sisters from here in Buffalo, NY! You are loved and appreciated and always welcome to enjoy the beautiful Lake Erie with us. My family moved here from Germany during the democratic revolutions of 1860 and from Poland during the Cold War. The place has seen its good times and its bad but in recent years we have begun to grow our population again. Much of it due to people from NYC and California moving up here. I appreciate them a lot because they embrace the laid back culture, history, and beauty of the area many seem to forget. Plus a lot of my close friends have moved here from NYC. So please, come on up crack open a bear, dip your feet in the sand and lets root on the Bills together! :)

@@chris1806 Mostly our architecture and roadways of our cities. Specifically coming from Buffalo NY much of our city has that old Britain aesthetic with certain area's. Victorian era buildings, and certain historical sights like Fort Niagara from the French and Indian war. Honestly here in Buffalo we still have the signature unspoken history of our former French colonization. We have Lafayette square, our city hall has the French fleur all over it along with other historically French aesthetic.

New York managed not to end up like Detroit, it even managed to become even more prosperous, truly a remarkable city!
Only because NYC wasn't based solely on one industry. Detroit was built around the auto industry, and once it started moving out of Detroit and they couldn't find other companies to fill the hole. It started to depressed. If Detroit has the financial, real estate, fashion and other industries that NYC does. It would be just as well off.

Great video! I would just like to point out that the map makes it seem like the mountains stop right before a New York and New Jersey when in fact, upstate New York is quite mountainous.

You forgot the Dutch, that provided the settlement in the first place, including its constitution which the English were bound to uphold. By the way, the American declaration of independence has much to owe to the Dutch declaration of independence some 200 years earlier. I think Benjamin Franklin was to blame for that as he was an ambassador of the United States in the Netherlands (although he disliked it).

You are incorrect about the time line of the capital of New York.
In 1777, Kingston NY was designated as the first capital of New York. In 1785 New York City was made the last capital under the Articles of Confederation and the first US capital under the Constitution of the United States. This is why Washington was inaugurated in the City in 1789. It wasn't until 1797 that Albany became the second (and current) capital of our state.
So if you ever see a beer called Old Capital by the brewing company Keegan Ales (located in Kingston, NY), toast to our amazing state and her first capital, beautiful Kingston!

Before the Civil War, which introduced income taxes, property taxes and sales taxes, the ports of New York City alone brought in more taxable income than all the other ports in the country combined and constituted about one third of all federal revenues. Boston and New Orleans came in second and third place, but not even they came anywhere close to the earning power of the tariffs on imports from NYC. That was why for the longest time in US history, the head of the ports in New York was an extremely important and powerful position.

New Angouleme was the first name, in 1529, but it's not even mentioned.

Been a NYer for over 45 years. Still have the home there but TX is now my primary residence. TX is also a state with a long and influential history...one that is going to be more so in the coming years/decades. If you haven't already, consider doing a similar overview of the history of TX.

You put Albany near present day Kingston which I'm told was at one point the State Capital before Albany. Overall very interesting short video.
The hairstyle “Mohawk“ is called a “Mohican” in Britain. It’s interesting how Americans and us use different tribes to refer to it.
When the English finally took over the Dutch area, part of the treaties allowed the Dutch to keep many of their traditions and rights.
the Dutch traded Manhattan for Surinam. This was a good trade for the Dutch at that time due to Surinam being fruitful soil

A correction on this. New York City was not the capital of New York State. Kingston was the capital until it was burnt down by the British, and then moved to Albany.

What surprised me a lot was Dutch trade manhattan with small islands (Banda) in Indonesia claimed by british at the time.

Upstater here. Great video about our State.
The first capital of New York was Kingston NY. It was burned by the British in October 16 -18, 1776. they were trying to reclaim Dutch held territory in the mid- Hudson Valley through to upstate. As far north as Ticonderoga Thence, the Great Chain was constructed and stretched across the Hudson, with its west Bank anchor point being at the revolutionary War Army Post of West Point, NY. The NY state assembly then escaped through tunnels under the state senate house and moved to various locations for over a year. The only buildings that survived the burning of Kingston were the Old Dutch Reformed Church, the Senate house buildings, and a some private homes which were also of stone construction. Likewise, King George had awarded the territory which encompassed New York And the now New Jersey to his relative the Duke of York. Duke of York awarded the portion of the territory to his cousin, the Duke of Jersey which we now know as the state of New Jersey. I think this video needs major revamping. Oh another NY native American tribe was the Black Foot.

Too focused on downstate, there is a lot of history in western NY and Northern NY, the Eire Canal deserves more than a passing mention.
I was thinking the same thing during the video. "There were natives. Now there is a canal. Now the native have reservations." About all I caught on anything much further North than Poughkeepsie. Mentioned Albany a few times, put it at Poughkeepsie on the map. Still a good video though.

You missed the fact that vikings (Leif the lucky) were the first Europeans to discover North America. But it seems like most Americans skip that part for some reason.
This video is about New York, not North America as a whole. The vikings stumbled upon New-Foundland (possibly other locations, but there is no proof). They have never been in New York, so this comment is completely irrelevant for this video

FYI: Washington DC is roughly 45 miles south of Baltimore, yet your map seems to indicate it’s the other way around. I realize this video is about New York, however, this is a glaring inaccuracy.

Okay, this is not really a history of New York State at all, but more like a quick primer on the history of New York City, and a grade school version of that as it is. A video that claims to tell the history of New York should offer a hell of a lot more than a passing mention of the Erie Canal and the economic strength it produced not just in the City but in all the towns/communities/cities along or near the canal itself. There's no mention even made of Buffalo, one of the handful of hugely important Great Lakes cities.
For the first 150 years of this country, New York is basically the most important and most populous, wealthiest state, and that wasn't all just down to NYC.
The fact that Vermont and NY almost went to war not long after the Revolution isn't at all brought up--Vermont just magically disappears from the territory.
WTF the WINE industry isn't even mentioned... the Finger Lakes being the second or third largest/most important wine producing region in the whole country, and in fact pretty much the oldest. Nothing at all is said of the culture of the state, of the presidents it produced, of the food it's introduced to the US, of the fact that after Massachusetts, it has the greatest number of institutions of higher learning of any state. I could go on and on.
This is total fail of a video, sorry.
Thanks for pointing out that this video is a 3rd grade history of New York. Left out: Zenger, Battles of Saratoga and Long Island, why Washington kept the Army outside NYC, the Federalist Papers, maybe Aaron Burr, the War of 1812 in upstate NY, more on both the Erie Canal and Seward, that the Draft Riots led Race Riots and it took Union troops sent from Gettysburg and appeal from the Catholic Archbishop to get the Irish off the streets, Boss Tweed and Tammany, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Greenwich Village, Broadway, Yellow Journalism, the emergence of the NY Times, and the impact all these had on NY and American history, society, politics, and culture. And that's only up to WWI or so.
You missed a lot of important facts. Kingston was the capital before Albany. Plus you missed any mention of Philadelphia as if NY was more important to the formation of the US and not Philadelphia.

As a former New Yorker I find it sad that we let our politicians ruin the economy.
The graphic artist or mapmaker did not place Albany anywhere near it's true location. That person out it where modern-day Westchester is located. It needs placing about 90 miles north of where it is on this yellow, blue, ivory, and red map of North America.

I'm a Western New Yorker (Buffalo area), and I love NY. Most of it anyways. I've been to about 18 different states and I really think New York is the most beautiful out of all the ones I've been to. Southwest Virginia is a very close 2nd though. I just wish NYC wasn't apart of the state. It should be its own state/territory. NYC has nothing in common with 90% of the rest of New York, yet they completely dominate our state's politics and control our way of life. They'd have more control of their lives, and we'd have more control of ours. Everyone wins.

The capitol shifted from Kingston to Albany, not from NYC to Albany.
