I am a dance teacher. I have been for 10 years. Our studio is incredibly successful and our dancers go on to dance with D1 colleges and professional performance companies. I was raised in a dance studio. I am furious and appalled at this idea that dance has to be toxic and abusive to be successful. We are strict and we teach discipline but we never belittle, degrade or mentally abuse our dancers. We don't have to resort to that kind of behavior. When you inspire and lead by example, you raise kids who are confident, supportive of each other and hard working. Never in my life would I say this is "normal" in the dance community.
I think the anger on the show is about her being a child. That it IS Hatefful and Toxic to MAKE children Dance, Sing, do anything to exploit them. Dance is Lovely. Filming your tired child dancing is abuse.

I grew up in the dance world and then worked in stage management for a few years and I can assure you I’ve never met or seen a dance studio without toxic dance teaching staff. Especially those more senior teachers of more successful studios. The number of children I’ve seen bought to tears and then expected to get themselves together, go out there and put on a perfect performance.
I think your studio is minority as well. I’m in small city in Canada and I’m finally pulling my daughter from dance next year. The dance studio is toxic and cliquey and lots of undertones of body and financial status shaming. Basically you have to drink the kool aid and put your kid in 17 dances and spring and summer sessions. They also shame kids that don’t catch on as quick naturally or don’t have natural acro abilities. And sadly it is known to just be the norm.

My daughter was dressed in jojo for almost 3 years. I'm so glad my daughter woke up. Same we tease eachother about how crazy jo jo is but in all actuality we pray for her and hope she can be a good girl and is surrounded with people who love her and not money. She's not going in a good direction and the stress of being made fun of and not knowing who you are breaks my heart 💔
My daughter was the same way. She loved her so much, wore the bright clothes, wanted her hair in a side high pony and the huge bow. It was before I knew better about this stuff. I mean I wanted to emulate Tiffany when I was a kid.
