Dont forget they're sent to fight basically as soon as they can. They're child soldiers. The reason they act all goofy and fearful is because they're literal children.

Grunts grow faster, they develop and reproduce faster.
Like dogs that at half a year it can already have pups
They develop quite fast so a 10 year old would be an equivalent of an adult. They are social creatures and care for their own safety so thats why they are goofy and scaredy
You can even see an exception to this in Halo 2.
The AI of heretic grunts was tweaked so they were more aggressive and never panicked, in contrast to their covenant counterparts.
It was never stated but it's possible that these were older grunts that were treated more as equals by their elites, rather than fodder.
Without the covenant's resources, the heretics could not replace them so easily, thus, they learned to truly value every life they had available to them.
These factors resulted in grunts that demonstrably have the confidence to fight and make tactical decisions on their own, even without the leadership of an elite.
@@Toast_94I feel like part of that also is due to fighting the heretics as the Arbiter not the Chief. The Chief os a demon to them, so he creates fear when they see him whereas Arbiter is basically just another Elite to them
I was wondering why it felt familiar to gun them down in droves.
Reminder that the reason the Covenant glassed half of their homeworld was because they were LOSING to the Grunt Uprising.
Which is hilarious to me, was there a specific book that discusses this or various lore pieces

You forgot to also mention that With the Vouching of an arbiter, the covenant did eventually give the ungoy weapons and equipment because they proved themselves to be very effective warriors. When push comes to Shove and they apologized for what they had done
Yep! Unfortunately it can be super hard to get everything in one big short. But it was the Sangheili who commended them as warriors and for standing up against them.
They even pushed some grunts into having political power after the rebellion. (even if it was uneffective)
He didnt forget to mention that he was talking about how badly the grunts used to be treated, this short has nothing do with what your talking about

@@LoRdInTeRwEbSI think they’re as strong as normal Human. We play as tall Spartans for most of the games, the canonical height is 5 1/2 feet tall for ungoy. An UNSC Soldier isn’t much taller to these guys.

It definitely probably played an ideal role for sure. The elites are the most preferred and well respected race out all of the other races (except the San'Shyuum ofcourse)
And have done alot of good in the long run in terms of keeping things in order. even if it was against the San'Shyuum's bidding

@@guardianvalor962Its because some grunts and hunters also sided the brutes. I think was done mostly so we can keep fighting them halo3 as well, because they were very interesting and keep most of the dynamics.
@@guardianvalor962damned if you do, damned if you dont. Grunts could either stay in covenant and maybe live, or leave and probably all die. Generations of gas lighting and near annihilation would have an insanely huge and profound impact on any culture. Fictitious or not.
The grunts didn't, Balaho stayed neutral, but most Unggoy armed forces stayed with whoever was controlling them at the time.
Remember, the grunts are strong enough to actually rip a marine in two, keep that in mind spartans

@@herihimikado8570Grunts are pretty tall compared to the average human, that and they’re way bulkier and have an exoskeleton. I forgot which planet this happened on but there were reports of Grunts and Jackals hunting and eating civilians somewhere. The only thing we have over grunts was training and bravery. Things the elites noticed and one of the many many many flaws they spotted in the Hierarchs orders to exterminate humanity
I’ve always felt bad for the grunts once I learned of their past as a species and so I either wouldn’t kill them or I’d headshot them to end it quickly and it made me hate the jackals and the covenant as a whole a lot more
Makes you also atleast respect the elites though!
After the grunt rebellion, it was the Sangheili who stood up for them! and commended them for putting up a good fight.
They also were the ones responsible for putting them in some form of power (though it did very little for them) and also granted them covenant weaponry and armor!

Jackals are easily the scumiest species in Halo. The Brutes are second worst but they have their moments of honour.

If it wasn’t for the Covenant, Banished, and their mistreatment at their hands, they probably would have sided with Humanity if they really wanted to.

They were entirely forced into joining the covenant. Being the only race to recieve absolutely ZERO benefits from being drafted in.
Every other species on board had something for them to gain in the long run. whether it was power, resources, etc. But not them. Absolutely wild haha

Yep haha. People often forget how BIG grunts actually are. With some reaching almost 6 feet tall on the bigger side.
Kig-yar and Unggoy were absolute savages during the war. and were legit terrifying haha

@@SpartanPhazed Stolt, one of Rtas' Squad Leaders in the Post-War Perood, was a Grunt about 7ft tall, due to his only being a Literal Head Shorter than the Average Elite. I believe he could also Successfully Wrestle a Brute, and the Crew of the Shadow of Intent treated himike a Grunt-shaped Sanghieli. It took a Prelate to stop him when he got going, which means he was Ridiculously Capable, as Prelates are Prophets capable of Fighting Spartans on an even footing.
Shoutout to that time Chief ripped a grunt's mask off and just let the poor bugger suffocate
I was 6yo when me and big brother discussed this while playing Halo 2, I genuinely remember us having a conversation about how the grunts looked and seemed like kids who were forced into battle, I’d be damned I was correct years later at 24yo now, back then Halo had a story to it but some of it you had to puzzle up yourself.

Remember also that Methane is one of the few gases that is More Volatile than what is found in Meth Labs.
I believe there's a line in one of the Halo books that states that the grunts by themselves were practically useless, but when there was groups of them they could even rival some Sangheili troops. The grunt Rebellion got so bad that the prophets had to deploy an arbiter to stop it.
Something you forgot even though they rebeled and went against the covenant the elites in specific showed respect towards their bravery not to mention the little guys gave sp much of a fight a arbiter was assigned to the rebellion
My friend and I would always try and escort any Grunt who rode a Ghosts
in Halo 2. We'd call the ones who actually did it the "Chosen One". I always felt bad for them, but the Birthday Party Skull made me cruel and efficient. Reach making it possible to just run them down for an assassination is pretty irresistible, it's like you're Michael Myers but for the "good guys".

I always wonder how the grunts would fair if they were on the human side. More military discipline? More training? Higher standard of living comparatively? Or is it wishful thinking? Home world would probably be glassed completely in retaliation though.
Honestly its an interesting thought. As they could use their absolutely MASSIVE numbers to be used in our aid. Even if they arent very effective at much else.
The only difference would be we’d have more bodies to throw at the Covenant. The reason humanity was getting its ass kicked during much of the human-Covenant war was that the Covenant were simply so much more technologically advanced. That wouldn’t change if the Unggoy had started on the human side.
TIL that the grunts’ race name is a literal translation of “monkey” in my mother tongue. In Filipino, “Unggoy” means “Monkey” and it’s read as ‘oong-goy’.

There are cannon stories with them as allies. Mostly in books but there are a few missions in Halo 5 that feature allied grunts. It's a shame we didn't get any in Infinite.

There is a dialog on iwhbyd where the grunts can say,"stop,I'm on your side" then they throw a grenade at a nearby enemy

It took glassing half of their homeworld to pacify them. The Grunt Rebellion nearly destroyed the Covenant, and the Elites opinion of the Grunts changed from that day forward. Having them as full members of Elite squads, and given military honors for their sheer tenacity.
Here's the funny thing: half of their homeworld was glassed, because they rebelled... *_and were winning._*

I've always wondered how the Elites, these hyper honorable warriors, were just okay with treating the Grunts like this.
The Single Good Thing the Created did: Repair Balaho from the Glassing done to Half of it. That's Right, the Covenant Didn't Let them Fix the Part they Glassed, but Cortana Actually Helped Fix It. She Also Helped Uplift Balaho, and Trusted the Grunts, and is likely how Yapyap got his troops and Supplies.
After that first part; i dont think things can get any worse...

Ah yes, they are abused by their “allies” and now abused by their enemies. I feel sorry for the amount of grunts I killed in the “Yappening”
The Jackals also fought against Covenant annexation though their most effective resistance came from raiders and pirates who persisted after the capitulation of conventional forces.
Oh for sure! Even the hunters would not back down easily.
However still through everything, these species still had some sort of agreement in place to better them in some way. Whether it was resources, safe places for their nests, etc.
The grunts had absolutely ZERO input on anything. And there was no agreement or mutual benefit AT ALL in place for them haha. They were outright just glassed and beaten straight into submission by the Covenant.
With any sort of uproar just leading to them receiving worse treatment or their world being glassed

What i mainly mean to say is that the grunts are the only race where they were outright forced with zero benefits to be had afterwards. All the other races had some sort of gain given to them even if they had absolutely zero choice in the matter. But grunts received absolutely nothing lol

The Ungoy eventually fought back. Causing a micro cival war. Even though they were stopped. The Elites gave them a certain level of respect.
I still love how in lore the covenant are treated as this powerful, ruthless empire that will glass planets if anyone tried to fight back against them
And somehow they still lost to a guy in a green suit who has a lady in his head who calls him studmuffin
They lost to a lot more than that. The entire army of Elites, led by the Arbiter, helped humanity win the war.

I wish that lower ranking grunts could surrender, throwing their weapon down and either running away or just hiding in a corner. A lot of times if there’s a retreating grunt, I’ll usually just move on if there’s no more enemies. Though if I have marines with me they just murder them anyway lol
After the Kig-Yar’s poisoned the Unggoy’s methane labs the Grunts rebelled and proved to be a very deadly and effective fighting force, they caused soo much damage and killed so many with their sheer numbers that an Arbiter had to be appointed to deal with them, after the rebellion was quelled Elites respected then much more for their ferocity in battle and convinced the Hierarchs to give them better armor and weapons; after the Great Schism a lot of Grunts followed the Elites and still fight along side them.
I feel bad for the Unggoy. They're just a bunch of little guys.

That should be a made up difficulty setting where you try to play through without killing any grunts, or as few as you can.

@@jackschneider6456 They showed no resistance to joining and assisting the Covenant. That might've changed down the line when the Covenant began abusing them, but they joined the Covenant willingly. Thus, the grunts remain the only species forced to join the Covenant.

Welp, I always felt bad for grunts; I would always try to avoid killing one that was obviously outmatched. but now that I know this information. Every grunt shall be spared. The rest of the covenant don't even have to worry about getting shot because they're gonna be getting swatted across the teeth with the stock of my rifle until they remember their transgressions just before they retire from life... I don't care how much a grunt shoots me with a needler, I'll dodge and or endure. I'm getting back on halo after this. It's been years in the waiting but, I'm telling YOU!
