I never thought there was a Birdy rabbit hole and I think I have fallen in..
So I was working security at a venue in Australia at a Niall Horan concert guarding one of the entries to back of house. The support act wasn’t listed on the information sheet, and even though I’ve never been a fan, I was pleasantly surprised when Birdy stepped on to the stage and sang a few songs I’d heard in cafes over the years and didn’t know they were hers. She completed her act and left the stage. On came Niall and I have to admit he won me over with a mix of down to earth interaction with the audience and maturing music. All the while I’m checking credential passes for people seeking back of house access. Several times an unassuming petite framed english woman in her mid to late twenties, wearing tracksuit pants with dark straight hair held up an access all areas pass to me which I illuminated with my pocket torch and allowed her through. Then she re-emerged through the door when some girls in the general admission area in front of the door politely approached her in the dimly lit space and asked her if they could take some selfies with her. In a very softly spoken manner she happily took selfies with all five of the young ladies and then proceeded back up towards the ground level stage entry curtain and disappeared. I’d just had two or three face to face interactions with Birdy and had no idea what she looked like. Needless to say she was a pleasant person to deal with. Kicking myself that I didn’t really know who she was at the time. Now I’ve been listening through all of her music the last month or two. I haven’t read much about her and her influences, but is it safe to say she’s a fan of Eva Cassidy? I can’t help but get vibes of her influence in songs like this one.
