    I train strongman, if anyone asked for help I would help them in the gym, if anyone was being teased, I'd help them there too. Anyone who sees this, don't be afraid. You will be fine, and if not, the biggest guys usually are the nicest

      @@woodlefoof2 there is a flip side to that in a fair few big guys can be rude because a lot of people are too afraid to correct them.
      Most people don't care about the ability/the size in the gym, they just care about people trying- that's what matters most anywhere.

      Agree with this comment mostly... The ones that helped me the most at the gym were strongmen and powerlifters... Only exception to the nice rule was a powerlifter who got in a fight at the gym with 2 boxers, turns out the dude also does sanda... So... He can lift the weight of both boxers put together, weight more than them and is a more versatile fighter... Thanks to the gods that he was stopped by another kickboxer before someone started swinging barbells, but a singke fight in 3 years shouldnt mark someones opinion about gym goers. (altho, its way more noticeable when the fight is between bears in human suits)

      @@KWillo it was stopped by the guy who runs the gym who is a kick boxer, the lean type... he just stood between the three and push them away of each other while telling them to stop... no one got seriously injured before that, i wouldnt say anyone won, but if they didnt stop i would bet on the sanda guy... i mean... he was at least 2 or 3 weight divisions over the heaviest of his oponents, and he is a fighter in a style that has everything boxing has plus kicks and grappling... if the strength was not enough, technique was on his favor too...

    I remember that getting strong af in the front squat also hardened my shins. Many martial arts trainers need a serious paradigm shift

      Unless of course they are lazy fuckers who sit on the benches and play with their phones refusing to take turns, try-hards throwing too much weights around without locking other joints, or those screamers dead-lifting less that 200lbs attempting and failing to impress their girlfriends. Otherwise, we are cool. We all start somewhere.

    If I may give suggestion, put more pulling movement workouts, as strong back and strong shoulder blades would help counterbalance the _dominant pushing movements_ in martial arts. It would also help you with your BJJ I believe

    Just one word of advice - from a guy who squats 315lbs and deadlifts 405lbs, and also trains in martial arts: squat to parallel or lower.

      Partial, Full, and Deep (ATG) squat, each has its own benefits. For example, for athletic performance, it's more useful to do partial ROM.

      Is the difference between bodybuilding and sports specific training
      A lot martial arts are not full range
      Look at the knee strike the movement begins when the knee is at the height of the hip and then finishes up either in chest or lower body
      So when you doing weight training you've got to think how can I introduce exercises which mimic martial arts I'm doing

      Movere Ergo Sum There will not be nearly enough stress on ur quads unless u go deep. deeper squat= better quads strength=better explosiveness. Just look at how Olympic weightlifters squat, the triple extension and the jerk are partial, explosive movements but they always squat to the bottom.

    I know this is an old one. But isolation exercises can actually be really useful in terms of increasing what you can in your compounds. Which is what directly feeds into how strong you are. Doing isolation exercises can help you activate muscles more efficiently, which lets you lift bigger loads during compound exercises, and the more load and weight your body is under during the compound exercises the greater the benefit will be.
    For example, a lot of people talk about injuring their backs during deadlifts. I did mostly bodybuilding before I changed sports to a more strength based approach. I didn't do a lot of deadlifts during that time, but I did a lot of pullovers, a lot of bicep isolation, some glute isolation exercises, and that helped when I transitioned to doing more deadlifts, because I could feel the muscles more, I could activate them more effectively.

      Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Since I made this video, I’ve changed a lot about how I lift. One of my main goals was to improve my squat- and just like you said, assistive exercises definitely increase your sense of proprioception. My quads were not engaging much, and they certainly weren’t growing at the time- and I felt most of the tension in my torso, not the legs. I did a ton of research, changed up my squat form, changed my program... and that helped- and it was very necessary. However, what brought me to the next level of squatting was the accessory work. When you can “wake up” the muscles you want to use, it’s quite simply much easier to use them.

      Yes, everything has its place, time, and context. Just program it to 80/20 between compound lift and isolation.

      @@RamseyDewey also working on "size" of your arms (can also be done by isos) it will help you on the Long run with adding more weight to e.g your benchpress. Your chest is mostly activated but your arms are stabilizing it, while Lifting - your tricep is pushing at the end too

    I love to work the kettlebells, I think they are perfect for martial arts, considering that kettlebells require swinging weight around, it enhances punching power and explosive mobility.

    I find it bullshit when people say strength isnt needed in a fight. Their was a video where Connor was sparring with hafthor, some morons actually think that Connor would beat him in a fight. Even thought clearly hafthor could crush Connor way too easily. Thanks for promoting weightlifting for martial artistists, skill can only take u so far.

    Great video bro..squats, deads, overhead press, cleans maybe some bench and rows, kettlebell swings and snatches and weighted pullups and pushups. That's all you need not just for combat sports but for rugby, American football just every day life. There is no finish line...train forever

    An old video I know, but it's profound indeed. In my youth, I looked up to my older brother for his amazing strength and power. He was a football player and he would only train 3 days a week, but he could deadlift up to 400 pounds three times.
    When I got into weightlifting myself at age 16, I fell in love with it. I kept at it until age 24, at which time I found out about MMA. I immediately switched my training away from a powerlifting style more towards explosiveness and endurance. Yet, I still adore strength training. That's why I still keep at it, going light then heavy, with proper form.
    These days, I still only lift and train 3 days a week. My progress is slow but steady. As with most things, I firmly believe in quality over quantity. Proper form with heavy weight will be more effective than the number of reps with small weights in building muscular strength.
    In my MMA training at American Top Team, I practice Muay Thai first and BJJ second with each session one hour. Shadowboxing, sparring, rolling, pad and heavy bag work, alternating every time to keep me on my toes and keep my skills sharp.
    Even at my local LA Fitness, I find everyone, even the swollen bodybuilder guys are polite, friendly and answer questions. Any time I need a spotter, usually I can find one just by asking. They're more than often happy to help.
    Indeed, I believe it's okay to ask for help. There's no shame in admitting you don't know.
    I think a truly strong person admits their limits and works with others to push past them.

    I would make the argument that muscle isolation work-outs transfers fairly well to combat sports. The mind-muscle-connection that comes from that sort of training does provide both coordination of understanding new techniques and movements in a safe way.

    I like your channel because you always answer the questions I always had as a martial artist.
    Martial arts are not magic ! We all grew up thinking (or wishing?) it was because of the movies (drama) where the small guy beats the big strong guy with a "secret" technique...
    Martial arts schools also sell that dream to attract new students for mencantile reasons (your son will beat bigger bullies, he will throw people easy since there is a technique and science behind and bla bla bla...IF YOU ARE NOT STRONG YOU DO NOT WIN FIGHTS !
    I remember I bought a Martial arts magazine when I was 14 and read Bruce Lee statement there: when you are strong you intimidate your opponent and make him punch you weaker.

    One thing I found,for striking at least is that the weight has to move quickly.
    If I'm lifting really heavy and the weight isn't moving quickly I found hand speed especially suffers.

    Need to up my power/ strength seriously unfortunately I am a natural right handed southpaw ( thanks to my 'Jeet Kune Do' days when I was younger.. where are you have your dominant hand forward) .. so yeah my power is really slacking.. I am trying to rely a lot on technique but would also like to know I have strength behind it !

    Best thing I ever got taught is to lift weights and train is to minimise the negatives of the exercise. It helps with DOMs meaning you can go and train without feeling like you're gonna die!

      But the negatives can help you grow the most, you dont need a lot of reps if each rep is completely challenging you

    I started training BJJ last July. When I was in my first month, a brown belt complimented me for being strong. At that point I had 8 years of strength and conditioning under my belt. Get out there and train.

    3 exercises that move your triceps up (overhead press-standing), horizontally (bench press), and down (dips). Chin ups and rows to develop bicep and back strength, deadlifts to develop grip and back, squats to develop legs. I want to be as strong as a bear so do low reps and multiple sets

      Sakis Papad not really; because if you do both rows and chins you're doing biceps twice and triceps you're doing three times through bench, overhead press and dips so you're only doing one extra exercise for triceps compared to biceps

    Hello Ramsey, do you still take 90ish seconds rests in between sets? I ask you because this video is 7 years old and you might have changed your training style. If you still do so, may I ask why? I've been lifting for some time, though I'm still very much a beginner, but I have always been under the impression that longer rest times (I tend to rest 3-4 minutes with compound lifts) optimise strength, at least from what I've learned.

    I believe Olympic Weight lifting might single handed be the best strength exercises for martial artist, along with mobility exercises, kettlebells, and sprints a lot of power can be generated

    Hex bar vs barbell? I will push hex bar(aka trap bar) currently up to 495lb with high handles and a static shrug at the top. For barbell deadlifts I don't go past 225lb due to safety concern of my lower back. I weigh 175lb and 5ft 7

    I totally agree with lifting for fighting but I've got one question I've been planning to lift heavy 3 times a week right after fight training is that a good idea??

      The Fit Kid most top fighters only train to about 70-80 percent of their capacity in their training as to not burn out and can work out everyday. They occasionally go to their peak but don’t train 100 percent the whole time

      Buakaw did it similarly. He just held a wooden stick with his teeth with the weights attached. I think it's quite popular in Thailand.

      Hahaha! Sumo cleans… that’s one way to put it! I learned a lot about lifting technique since making this video. It turns out that the strength training community on TH-cam tends to give much more constructive and helpful advice in the comments section than the martial arts community.

      Second it's the typical elbow pain. Tennis elbow. I do weighted pullups. Only +10kgs. And some knee pain with the squats. Is there no exercise to aid it?

      I haven’t seen it, but doing a bunch of burpees in a regular basis will make you fit. Go for it!

    you shouldnt scream while doing deadlifts. you should do valsalva maneuvre.

      I hear you loud and clear! This video needs an update. It’s not just the depth, it’s that horrible high bar position and a dozen other things. A lot of the other lifts in this video are way off as well. Don’t worry, I got better! (And a lot stronger)

      Proper strength training increases range of motion. There’s no good reason you can’t lift heavy and be flexible at the time.

    Hey Ramsey Dewey, you need to check your form on your KB Swing and Clean & Press. You're "Squat-Swinging" which is a serious no-no as far as all them Kettlebell Gurus will say...
