- In this video, we will be exploring the fascinating language of Brajabuli. It is a unique blend of Bengali and Maithili, and was created by Bengali speakers who were huge fans of Maithili, but did not actually speak the language themselves.
They wrote songs in this hybrid language as a way to express their devotion to Radha and Krishna, and it was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and his followers who popularized it. It is important to note that Brajabuli should not be confused with Braj Bhasha, which is spoken in Uttar Pradesh.
Brajabuli, on the other hand, is a form of Maithili that originated in the lands of Bengal. In the past, Maithili and Bengali were written in the same script, which has now evolved into the Tirhut script. So come join us as we delve into the rich history and culture behind the beautiful language of Brajabuli.

I'm a Maithili speaker myself, I feel very bad when I don't see Maithili as an option among other languages whenever I have to fill any form. I didn't even know the script of Maithili until recently, being from Janakpur, once capital of the great Mithila empire it hurts a lot. We really need to come forward and contribute to the upliftment of our language.

In Bengal, we sing Brajabali Kirtan during Krishna Kirtans. It's a common sight to see people cry while singing. As a teenager, I used to wonder why they cry, but now I understand the depth of emotions involved. Whenever I witness such moments, I am moved to tears as well.

My first exposure to maithili was sawan gaganey ghor ghanaghata… I knew both Hindi and Bengali by then. I also learnt about Maithili in school and borrowed some books from school library to read some poems. Our librarian sir also told me so much about the beautiful language. Then one Sunday morning I heard this song on my mum’s rabindeasangeet collection that played as a morning ritual at our home. I instantly thought this was Maithili and asked mum. She told me about brojobuli and chaitnya srot in Bengal. Since then I have loved this language, maithili, it’s sweetness and grace. As a child I was in love with krishna and thought if any language should describe the essence of krishna it should be maithili and brojobuli. You made me live those days again for few moments. It pains me to see Maithili is not used for beautiful songs and poems anymore but all rubbish degrading music.

Bihar used to be the most culturally rich region of India. Most of the greatest empires like Mauryan, Gupta emerged from there. It is sad to see Bihar in such a dilapidated condition.
On another note, one has to just admire the talent of Kobiguru Robindronath Thakur. He composed works in Bengali, Sanskrit, English, etc now got to know that he did in Brajavali too. He was a great painter too. I don't think India in her history has produced a better artist than him. As versatile as him.
Bihar's Mithila is still culturally rich unlike Bhojpuri speaking and Magadhi speaking region.

Our Guru Sankardeva wrote so many borgeets using Brajawali (ব্ৰজাৱলী) mixing Assamese and maithili❤️both of our gurus (Sankardeva and Madhadeva) wrote borgeets and culturally enriched us. Brajawali language has a special place in the hearts of assamese. We're emotionally, religiously, spiritually connected to this language. Wish you highlighted that point too ❤❤ much love.

I think our Brajavali is different from this language. And there is less emphasis on the lover aspect of Krishna like from Radha's perspective and more emphasis on servitude and seeking his shelter.
@@luit361 Yes Brajavali and Brajabuli are different, but both have developed from Maithili, both are literary forms of Maithili; one has an Assamese tinge to it while the other one has a Bengali tinge.
How does Sylheti language relates to this? Chaitanya Mohaprabhu's origin is Dhaka Dakshin in Sylhet. Radha Raman Datta has written and sang many songs in this language.
I still remember the day when my Bangla sir taught us about 'Baishnab Padabali', for the first time I heard the name of Chandidas and Bidyapati, after a few years when I was doing my graduation in Bengali literature, we read the entire Padabali, we were so overwhelmed, we still are. ❤️❤️

@@iip yes I do, 'sandhyo' this word is derived from the bangla word 'sondhya' which means dusk, the mesmerizing time between day and night not the night not the day. It has two meanings, not necessarily what you're reading it has the same literal meaning. But this Sandhyo bhasa used in Charyapad, not in Baishnab Padabali, sorry I mixed up the two.
@@iip Sorry to barge in in another person’s thread, but Brajabuli isn’t dubbed “sandhya bhasha”. That epithet goes for the oldest form of Bengali found in charyapada, the works of Luipada, Kanhapada, Vusukupada etc. And that is called “Sandhya bhasha” (Sandhya=Evening/Dusk=mixture of light and darkness) due to the cryptic and metaphorical nature of the charya poetries. It represents Buddhist tantric philosophy through mundane life’s description, in ambiguous languages, so some of it can be interpreted easily (light), some not (darkness).

I am a Maithil, from past 13 years my family is living in Delhi and in Delhi i came across this situation a lot of time where whenever my schoolmate use to crack some joke or use to say idiot to any child they often say 'abey bihari h kya ' or they just say 'kya bihario wali harkaten h' don't know why but whenever they have to set a bad example they indicate it with a bihari. In every summer vacation we went to our hometown darbhanga and I really feel very very very proud to be a MAITHIL or a BIHARI. My father is a mithila painting artist and when he teaches his student and tell them the story behind each and every painting I really feel proud. Your message for all maithila wasi and bihari's at the end of the video literally touched my heart and i started crying because as a bihari we never got that kind of respect or response from someone else. As an Assamese I think Brajabuli language is beautiful . We people have songs in Brajavali called Borgeets written by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhavdeva (The two Mahapurush who introduced Vaishnavism to the Assamese) . We people added our own accent in the language. Those Borgeets are mostly about Sri Krishna.

I would only like to add that 'Bharati'( ভারতী) was a monthly Bangla periodical published by the Tagore family during the late nineteenth century till the early twentieth century. The name of the editor seen on the page of 'Bharati' in this video is of 'Shornokumari Debi'(স্বর্ণকুমারী দেবী), the elder sister of Rabindranath Tagore and a prominent literary figure of Bengal. She was one of the many members of the Tagore family who later became the editors of 'Bharati'.

In another context, there is another language, Brajavali, carrying the vocables of Assamese and inflections of Maithili. A considerable volume of Assam's Vaishnavite literature, (including plays, which are staged even today) has been written in this language.
Finally someone said it! Being a maithil it deeply saddens me how many people from my community are just drifting away from our beautiful culture calling it old fashioned and outdated.
I especially loved the last part of the video, indeed, there are problems going on but we should embrace our culture proudly and do a little bit we can to revive mithilanchali tradition.

I am from Assam. Assam has a native language called Bajrabali. Srimanta Sankardev & Madhabdev wrote many poems in this language which we called Borgeet. I wish if you could do some research on Borgeet and put some light on it.
That's what I was going to say. Guru Sankardeva wrote so many borgeets using Brajawali (ব্ৰজাৱলী) mixing Assamese and maithili❤️both of our gurus wrote borgeets and culturally enriched us।
Being a Maithlani(female Maithil) it literally touched the core of my heart. Maithli is the sweetest language of whole world.

I agree ,people may claim that Bengali is the sweetest language, but I have had the opportunity of having at least a dozen maithil friends, and fun part was at one point our conversations were pretty funny. they would speak in Maithili and I in Bengali and we would both understand each other. Seems funny but it's true.

I've always connected more with my friends from Mithila in college. One of them is from Nepal and four of them from Bihar.
In fact, I feel more sense of belonging with them than many of the Bengalis there.
I guess that's because I can speak the language that I spoke in my neighborhood, a Creole of Bangla, Maithili, Bhojpuri and Hindi.

From verses like "Athithi devo bhawah" to debating like Mandana Mishra with Adi Shankracharya, Mithila gave a lot to India. From vedic times (like Chhath Puja since Sat Yuga) to Ramayna (Treta Yuga), no part of Bharat can claim to be as ancient and as rich as Mithila had been. Mithila is older than Kannauaj itself, let alone Bihar, Bengal or Jharkhand for that matter. Even the renowned Nalanda university which was in South Bihar used to have more teachers from Mithila than the rest of the India. You can check the literary remainings in the newly constructed library there.
I doubt even the current generation of Mithila under Bihar Govt studies history of Mithila and reasons behind our culture that there was a time when even Bengali pandits and people from around east used to come Mithila to study Vedas and Tantra . It's Mithila who gave Durga Bhakti Tarangini which now Bengalis use for Durga Puja . From Kamakhya Devi Mandir in Assam to Kalighat in Kolkata, one can easily see the mithila influence. Even I have come to understand very recently as to why my parents used to teach me that our 'Kuula Devi' is Ma Bhagwati Kali.
Moreover, Mithila has abundance of rivers and fertile lands unlike South Bihar which face frequent droughts. Even the great Bengal Famine imposed by Britishers couldn't affect us much. Even today the lichis and makhanas are mostly produced in Mithila in India. But today, even the rest of the Bihar is ahead of us in terms of infrastructure, political representation, etc.
Things need to change and will change for sure. People who have left Mithila for education and job have started taking the first few steps on the ground.

Thank you Soumya, I am humbled. I think my knowledge is a byproduct of just persistent curiosity. I studied Architecture in Kharagpur, although I did jump to Programming after I graduated. I approach Bengali with a lot of fascination and respect. Through these videos, I just want to document how the culture and language feel like to me. I think we need to have more inter-cultural dialogues in India to work better as a country together. Knowing the specifics of our countrymen, and knowing what makes them unique will help the nation be more at ease with itself. I am so impressed by the research and efforts you have put into this video. My mother is from Vidyapati Nagar, a small village in the Samastipur district of Bihar. So there's this museum/temple of Vidyapati ji, people see him more like a godly figure,he is such an important and celebrated Literary scholar back in her village but people do not even know about him outside the proximity of Bihar and that always made me sad but now that you have talked about his contribution in the video, I feel hopefully that he's legacy wouldn't just disappear in the thin air
In Bengal we have Vidyapati as part of our literature curriculum
Vidyapati's works were taught in our schools in both Bengali and Hindi classes in West Bengal - and is one of the key poets of "aadikaal". I remember learning some of his padavalis as a student. It was only later that I realised that Maithili is a language in own right. Luckily more awareness is coming now in Bihar and it has become part of the recognised languages in the Indian constitution (already a part of Nepal constitution). I sincerely hope that its original script is revived. That script is more complete than the Bengali script and is nearly similar (except for va, ra, etc.) The Mithila region and culture has given the world many thinkers over the centuries. I hope the language and culture thrives and does not get subsumed by the Hindustani (Hindu / Urdu) culture in modern day Bihar. It should be possible to thrive concurrently with Hindustani and other languages, provided Maithli speakers become more aware and value their cultural wealth. That should happen when the region continues becomes more prosperous.
Maithili is one of the ancient languages of India. The origin of Bangla & Maithili is the same i.e., Magadhi Prakrit. The land of estern Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bangladesh, Assam & Odisha were marked as a single land of eastern India before. It was the land of glorious Buddha Mahayana. It was the land of Universities (Bouddha Vihara). So the languages & the rich cultural heritages are very close to eachother.

In India, we often use the term 'pure english', 'pure hindi'. It kinda implies that all other variations, mixture of language are somehow impure. But, when you try to understand the story of mix-languages, you realise the beauty of it. How it signifies 'sangam' of different cultures, people. How many love stories are hidden in these mixes. Often mix languages are created when both parents speak different language but children end up learning both languages.
Really love this diversity in India. So many stories and history hidden in everything.

@@subhadeepdey9737 Hindi and Urdu are forms of Hindustani. In Hindi, Persian words were purged and replaced with Sanskrit terms and in Urdu the opposite was done. They added more Persian and Arabic words and made it a standard Urdu.
Hum tum jaise baat karte hai wo hindustani hai. Aur aise hi baat Pakistani bhi karte hai. But jab formal settings me hote hai, jaise textbooks me ya poems me ya new channelo me, waha standard firms use kiye jaate hai. DD Hindi and DD Urdu dekho. Samjh jaoge.

BRAJABULI has a deep influence in assamese writtings too. Lord shrimamta shankarseva and Madhab deva used brojabuli to write assamese dramas and poems. So being an Assamese i would love to see a video on influence of brojabuli in Assam also....

Assamese Brajabuli is created by Gurujana Srimanta Sankardev mixing Maithili and Assamese and then he created Ankiya Naats to spread it beyond the boundaries of then Greater Assam. When the Bhaona used to staged, people from different sects and places could get the meaning of the ‘Natya’s. Gurajana and then Madhavdev created Bor-geet to spread the words further. That Assamese Brajaboli is different from the Barabuli created in Bengal. As both the languages originated from Maithili and was created to enhance the Bhakti movement, sound similar in many part.
The message in the outro made me emotional. Being a Maithil, I am always confused why a land of such rich history and culture isnt that known. Your constant inklings in your video about Mithila is something which always puts a smile on my face. I didn’t know much about brajabuli. But after watching your video I keep thinking about enormous opportunities of creating new songs in this language. I don’t know why our lyricists, atleast those who write songs in classical tone, are not thinking about this. These languages shouldn’t be forgotten. It is probably the best Indian language to compose songs in.

Even the scripts of Bengali, Assamese and Manipuri are derivatives of Mithilakshar(the script of Mithila). The scripts of Tibet and Ladakh are also inspired from this script. Probably due to the influence of Boudh Dharma from this land.

Starting from 2021, Meitei script (officially known as Meitei Mayek) was officially used by the Government of Manipur, along with the Bengali-Assamese script, to write the Meitei language, as per "The Manipur Official Language (Amendment) Act, 2021".
Very well done! Being a Bengali who grew up in Bihar with many Mythili neighbors, I connect to this video immediately. IMO, Mythili people must value their language above Hindi to reinstate the past pride, and encourage younger generation to create literary work for children and younger people in Mythili. Without the literature and art, a language can not survive long, especially when every language in India is under pressure from English & Hindi.
