    ABOUT ME
    I’m Fern! A 20-something gal living on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada with my sweet lil doggo & around 100 houseplants. Plants have changed my life - I love tending to them and sharing the joys and discoveries of my planty journey online. I am passionate about all things living and I have been vegan for over 6 years - it was the best decision I’ve ever made. For those into astrology, I am a gemini sun, scorpio moon, & libra rising. I started out on social media with a focus on makeup/beauty/fashion and am not into it as much, but I do share on those topics from time to time. Thanks for stopping by!

    One of the reasons I like wet stick propagation is solving the mystery of which plant is growing.

    I def recommend fertilizing alocasias every two weeks! In nature they're heavy nutrient feeders by eating decaying matter along the jungle floor!! If the leaves keep dying if might be bc they aren't getting enough nutrients :)

      Ohh thanks so much for the tip! I will try out increasing feeding

    girl I want the tea about pon... everyone raves about it (which to be honest is a good thing) but like there must be downsides? or troubles plant parents are having with the substrate! Please do an update video about it!!

    • @patrycjareszka9475
      @patrycjareszka9475 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my yt observations, it seems that for some reason plants in pon are more susceptible to root mealies. It might be a coincidence, but two of the TH-camrs I watch who I’m sure don’t know about each other, pretty much at the same time started complaining about root mealies, claiming that the bugs only occurred in their plants in pon 👀

    • @aniliname
      @aniliname 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've never heard about the root mealies issue and haven't had the problem myself (fingers crossed), but I have to say... I'm crazy about pon. There's a little bit of a learning curve with it, but I've converted almost all my plants to it - some in self-watering, some in regular pots with drainage, and I'm so happy with it. It's not just that it eliminates fungus gnat issues and is much cleaner and easier in my opinion, it seems the increased oxygen makes the roots grow so much chunkier and allows them to then go longer without water since they can store more of it. I've got a sunny home with south-facing windows and only needed to water my plants every 10 days this summer, which is crazy compared to previous years when I used soil. I have the thirsty plants in self-watering so I don't have to worry about them and since the pon dries out at the same time I'm able to water the others that like to dry out between waterings on a schedule, which also makes my life easier. I've had a lot of plants that were doing well for a long time and started to struggle out of nowhere and all I could think of was that their soil became compact and when I switched them to pon it was like they were born again. In general I just see so much increased growth when I convert plants to it. I never tried leca on a large scale but heard a lot of complaints and I just don't have the patience to balance ph levels and do all that and it seems those little issues are eliminated with pon. It's got a neutral ph and delivers nutrients to the roots better. Downsides...well, it's got slow release fertilizer so it's hard to know how much fertilizer your plants are getting. I find it's not enough for heavy feeders and then I'm not sure if I'm overfertilizing when I add more. You need to find ways to plug your drainage holes so it doesn't go flying everywhere. And it's pricey (but you can boil and reuse it) and hard to find in a lot of countries. You can make your own, but I find that the diy or generic brand ones I've had weren't as good and ended up switching to lechuza. There's something about the stones having a uniform size that seems to be better in my experience. Other than that, my friends are sick of me raving about it. It's expensive but worth the investment. It just takes so much guesswork out of watering and diagnosing issues and I'm kind of crazy about the stuff. I guess it's also worth saying that I've been using it for a couple years on 140+ plants and have gotten a lot of my friends and family to convert to it. So this is based on those experiences.

    If you’re worried about using a heat mat but would like to try using one, get a thermostat. I don’t know if they do plant ones but a good reptile thermostat isn’t expensive at all and just makes sure the heat mat will never go over a certain temp.

    Keep your alocasia wet. I have never let mine dry out completely, except at the beginning of my first alocasia, I lost every leaf, then they came in tiny, so I have learned, lots of water, never let it dry out. I keep the bottom of the pot/soil wet at all times. And give it a lot of light. Mine is right by my grow lights and I am at 5 leaves and she's pregnant. I had so many issues with alocasia fydek at the beginning!! I was ready to give up. I had it in terra cotta, 5 in pot. And an airy mix. It hated it. It would dry so fast, so now she's in plastic with more peat moss in the soil. And I haven't lost a leaf since. I water every 4-7 days. I have seen so many ppl I'm the two leaf club, it's because it's under watered so it has to kill the older leaf off to have the water/energy to put the new one out. Light, water! Lots of both! Hopefully this helps!! :)

    I've always water propagated all my plants that can be propagated. I only just started perlite propping and that really opens up a world of wet stick/node propping! Propping in moss has been great for the plant to root but a nightmare to remove when ready to pot up! Thank you, FERN! You always inspire me!

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ahhh yessss I hate removing the moss, perlite is so much easier!

    • @martar.8095
      @martar.8095 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Apparently perlite moves up and down through the soil as time marches on, so I wouldn’t be bothered to wipe it away from the roots. Perlite works wonders!

    • @kimg6911
      @kimg6911 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Need some advice. I have always water propagated & just recently tried the perlite prop which in turn rotted everything. Why? The perlite stayed soaked & never dried at all & all I had was an open topped water bottle. Please let me know the secret

    • @martar.8095
      @martar.8095 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kimg6911 hi! Maybe you put too much water in the propagation vase. Perlite works, in easy words, giving water to the roots at a steady pace, that’s why if done properly you won’t get any rotting in your cutting. This means you can fill your prop vase with perlite up to the very top of it, but you’ll only fill it with water up to a third, or even half of it (if the perlite dries out too quickly I’d choose to fill half of it). That way the cutting gets water but it’s not constantly touching the water, which is why it rots. Hope I helped :)

    13:45 I know this video is from a year ago, but as someone with reptiles, I use a thermostat for all my heating devices.. you could totally do this for a heat mat and it’ll shut off if it gets too hot!

    Fern, whenever you talk about your M. Peru, I relate SO much. I’ve had a single cutting which I rooted and the roots rotted 2x on me.

    Hope yours continues to thrive!

    A trick to avoid root. Rot: water with one quarter teaspoon of peroxide per gallon of water monthly and right after repotting . I am off of grow lights because the special spectrum falls off after a couple months and then it's just a fluorescent bulb

    I currently have a thrips infestation that practically destroyed my Pilea - the second plant I ever bought. I know I can find pileas everywhere, but this one has special meaning, so I'm thinking about chopping all the damaged leaves and re-starting it as a wet stick... Thoughts?

      @wildfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmmm I'm not sure about growing pileas from wet stick. they don't have the same nodes are monsters/philos/etc. Even if it only has a few leaves left it can likely bounce back though!! maybe just hold out awhile longer before re-starting it 🥰

    I bought special propagation pots with “humidity domes” that snap on to the pots. Is it a problem to have a leaf touching or pressing up against the dome if I’m propagating a stem cutting? Will the leaf rot or cause the propagation to fail?

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can cause the leaf to rot away :(

    what medium was the hoya fungii growing in? and what medium do hoyas do best in?

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was grown in only sphagnum moss for a year. I have recently transferred it to an airy mix (coco coir, orchid bark, pumice, & perlite)

    The alocasia only has one or two leaves because the corm isn’t mature or large enough to support more than that. As it becomes more mature it can hold more leaves. :)

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      weird!! if it's in sphagnum try to move it to perlite and if it's in perlite I would try sphagnum. sometimes a different medium will get those roots going :)

      How many times you water them? They need their soil to be moist most of the times, need very bright light, and lessen the organic matter in the potting mix (more pumice, perlite, zeolite).
