- This episode we have a look at repairing the Rear Banana Caliper on This Old Shovelhead. Anyone who has , or does own one of these Vintage Bikes, will know exactly what I am talking about. We have all been there. These old rear brakes get worn out and shake a rattle all over the place. Many are beyond repair. But if you get them before its to late, they can be made to work once again. Hope this helps some of you out there. Enjoy!

Ah yes, those lovely brakes... Great job on the rebuild Ralph!
Yes they are pretty poor. That is why I made a plate to adapt 2008 brakes to my
shovel. I use the brake and the disc both. You can see it in my "selling my 81 " Video. Thanks for commenting.
Another great video, Ralph. Thanks so much for taking the time to show us how it’s done and what a great finish. I’ll be down again, See ya soon, and thanks 😊
Thanks Gus. Look forward to your visits. Its great that you are learning how she really works. Thanks for commenting.
You do some nice work Ralph.. thanks.
Thanks, nice of you to say that. Appreciated!
Another awesome video Ralph, now Gus will be able to get some more miles out of the old calliper instead of tossing it
Hopefully it will be good for a while. Done what we could do to it. Thanks for the comment.
Great video and work Ralph 👍 It's easy to see you are a master of your trade! Keep up the good work my friend!😊 😊😊😊
I don't know about Master, but always learning and always trying. Thats what keeps it interesting. Thanks for the comment.
Ahhh the joys of the 🍌!🤦🏻♂️
Good job
Ya showed it realistically 🤪👍🏻
Great Video. Currently on the lookout for a rear banana bracket that fits an 11.5" rotor. I think they only made them a few years.
Thanks a hard piece to find 1981 -1984 FLs I believe, just few years. Checked to see if I could source one aftermarket. Just got the dreaded NO STOCK message. Even a whole kit with the brake included. No stock. But there are other companies out there. Be sure you get a straight one, if you get one used. Good Luck.
Where did you buy the bigger pivot pins for the banana caliper?
Got them through, my shop, from a company called Preston Cycle. They were manufactured by Bender Cycle. Most independent shops should be able to get them. Thanks for commenting.
Brakes can be expensive to repair or upgrade but ya know they are kind of nice to have.
You bet. They are expensive so its nice to save them when you can. Thanks for commenting.
😎👍😎
Thanks
had to replace one a while back, worn so bad the disc cut through BOTH pins that hold the pads.
I had seen that happen, not all the way through but close to it. Thanks for commenting.
Great job.I have a 79 HD FXS low rider with same problem.Do you think I can use a 1 ton hand press to remove the races? I remember my dad using dry ice to install them in heavy equipment.
Maybe but the bushings can be in there hard. I have a 4 ton and it pushed them no problem so you might be ok. Just depends how bad they are . But the bushings are thin walled and you should have a driver with a pilot (Smaller part that fits inside the bushing) so when you press them, in they don't collapse. Good Luck and thanks for commenting.
Nice job ralph!!! And what a horrible design the banana caliper was, to actually have spring mounted foot support to help stop it from rattling!!! That’s a factory support?
I hear ya Slick. Thats why I made a plate to mount 2008 brakes to my shovel. No the spring is aftermarket I think. Works ok but tends to push the brake sideways as soon as they get loose. Thanks for commenting.
I remember wedging a valve spring between the bottom of the caliper and the top side of the swing arm on my ol 1976 superglue... lol. Them were the days 😂
Had to do what we could do to get home lots of the time. Thanks for the comment!@@DeuceDevil
👍👍👍👍
Same to you. Thanks for commenting.
What's the old saying, enough money can fix anything 😅😅😅
You are right, can't afford to buy them fancy PM brakes up here ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
