Just got this mower today and loved it already. Your video of such a thick tall lawn responding to it is encouraging. All it missed for me were a couple of weeds and few patches of grass that were 10 inches high. As the instructions point out, you may need to initially get the grass to a cuttable height i.e. less than 6 inches with a regular powered mower, then should be able to keep up easily with this and do a uniform job. No upkeep, no recharging, no gas and oil to buy, no flooding of engine, no blades that require at least yearly sharpening if you don't just want to tear the grass, no filters to change/wash - betting I can mow more often easily without a flinch. With its convenience, do not have to think twice about just doing a small portion of the lawn if that is all the time I have. From the design of it, it is definitely not for heavily pine coned or fruit laden yards, crabgrass or weed lawns - has to be for a lawn that has regular attention.
As mentioned in the video, this mower doesn't cut seed stalks with a single forward pass. This is because the tall stalks are held down below the cutting bed by the bar in front of the reel. With some practice I've learned to pull the mower backwards back over the uncut stalk so that the reel is an inch or two behind the stalk. Then with a quick forward thrust of the mower, the stalk usually bows up into the path of the reel and gets cut. Sometimes I don't get it on the first try, but I find that incorporating a sharp twist left or right as you thrust forward works pretty well. You have to pay attention and notice the stalks as they pop up behind the mower when you first pass over them. But I've gotten to the point where I pretty much do it automatically and the result is every bit as even as a power mower.
@@Octizm I know they are a lot better for clean lawns that look really nice, but the lawns I take care of are big hills with lots of trees and grass that grows way too fast in one week to look nice without good mulching.
I bought one recently. Yeah it doesn't do the best if your lawn is overgrown but after a few passes it works just fine. Or use a weed eater to break up the majority, then sweep with this thing. I love it.
Today I bought a reel mower, my grass was tall, it took hours and I am super tired. Guess I will develop some solid upper body strength with that thing.
@@kvin9210 I gotta say my lawn is looking great since I keep it mowed. Yeah it's a bit of work, but the reel mower cuts beautifully without choking me with fumes
I use mine as an excuse to get some extra cardio into my life and be active so I actually like all the work it takes lol. The results are lovely too so I don't mind.
Yes if you follow the thirds rule there'll be no choking. Good point on front discharge recut. I thought the only drawback was no mulching but recut may take care of that.
You can mow with a regular lawn mower or use a string trimmer to get the grass lower rake the grass and compost that grass and enhance the compost with all natural ingredients . Then use your reel mower maintain . You can use compost Anywhere on your yard. Even to v over seed . Or to improve the soil near wher the grass meets bare spots..
Thank for the video, Seriously though more your lawn more often or if it really grows that fast in 1 week you should consider starting a garden in that soil :).
Yeah, that is definitely the wrong application for this mower. Looks like it would be a great mower for most well kept lawns and ecological and health conscious people.
0:59 → This weakness can be overcome by making the blades discontinuous. I made a proof of concept video showing the discontinuous blade arrangement in action.
Hi, thegrayjedi5202. Congrats on owning a reel mower. You won't find any videos of stock reel mowers cutting tall stuff. They can't do it. You have to make a relacement for the helical blade on the mower yourself.
I have a DIY guide on the gardening section of stackexchange and a concept video here on TH-cam but TH-cam keeps knocking off my posts when I add the addresses to those.
Nope. It means having radial blades that can push past the tall stuff without knocking them to the ground and then snipping them against the bedknife as the radial blades circle around. Watch the concept video. You'll get a clearer idea of how it works from that.
I returned the mower. It wasn't working out very well on the really tall grass. I bought a Ryobi 16 in. 40-Volt Lithium Cordeless Electric Lawn Mower with 2 Batteries. It didn't last very long. It kept cutting out on me. I thought that maybe the battery had a problem so I went to switch batteries but the battery wouldn't come out. I think that it welded the contacts together. I'm waiting for Home Depot to send me a replacement mower. My neighbor was kind enough to lend me his gas mower for now.
of course exactly this model is made for higher grass. you just have to be conscious about going faster turns the reel faster. faster is better cut in this case.
Fiskars does offer a clipping catcher that mounts forward of the blades. It is a open top design of course so you fill the basket more than a bagger can hold. Nice Electric weed wacker would take care of those pesky stalks.
I have a 22 inch mower now and have heard about Toro's Timemaster with a 30 inch cut. More width = less time. More power = no sore muscles afterwards. My next mower is a 30 inch Toro.
I have been debating on a cheaper reel mower just because of one issue. Hills. I live on the corner of a street and have 4' grassy embankment going all along both. I love my gas mower, it serves me well, but weather it is power assisted or not hills are back breaking. Hopping something much lighter to push around would make things easier.
Used to own a push mower. Works well only if you have decent size lawn and don't mind to cut frequently. btw, Dr Z calls the "uphill" a "high side". Glad he didn't call a "discharge line." lol Good video, fun video. Thanks as always !
That remined me of when I was a kid, it was the only thing we had. It was always my job to mow, seemed it was never sharp, even if my dad sharpened it.
Is this for reel? I'm not reelly a fan push push mowers, but this looks reelly neat. It would take a reelly long time to mow my acre and I'm sure I'd be reel tired.
Brent Hill They are called StaySharp, thus you do not have to sharpen as with others on a yearly basis and they sell a kit to resharpen it if needed which is simply a app brush to prep the blades with a wax and a crank to wind the blades in reverse to sharpen.
Sharpening is quite easy really. All you need to do is disconnect the drive and attach a power drill. Apply backlapping compound to the reel. Lower the reel to make slight contact with the bedknife and then use the power drill to spin the reel. Then your done.
I've had mine for 4 seasons now and use it to cut about 1/3 acre. I use a grass whip before I mow to knock down the seed stalks and other tall bits. grass whip for those who are scratching their head looks like this: www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1272540&cp=2568443.2568444.2598674.2601432.2602644.1260267
The reason it wasn't cutting the stalks is because you have it to high if you set it lower height then you should be able to cut those seed stalks. what i suggest is run it on the high like you had it for the first pass of the entire yard then run it on the low in a second pass of the yard and that should take care of the seed stalks.
Nope, I can tell you from 4 years with one that you need to use something like a grass whip or weed eater to knock the seed stalks down to a cut-able height.
killerbliss1 no. Reel mowers arnt meant to cut weeds. Iv used reel mowers on really nice golf courses and even spinning at 3000rpm won't cut a damn weed because they arnt meant to cute weed! Lol they are meant to clip the top of the grass of a well maintain lawn.
You need to cut the grass more often you are letting it to tall if you are getting seed stalks. I love these videos were people are talking about how they don't work on tall grass. .
I don’t have issues with not cutting for a few days. Growth regulator keeps grass from growing vertically, not horizontally. Once you have grass where u like, put it down. Then use fiskars for lite trims here and there.
I've had a cordless for 12 years, same battery. It was losing power the past few seasons, requiring an extra charge to finish the lawn. Today it died on me. So I just bought this Fiskar 18" (lightly used, 1 yr old, half of retail). I will probably get new batteries for my cordless though, and possibly convert it to LiFePO4 units. I was quite happy not having a gas mower for the past decade+.
Jeep Man Push Reel are more for small lawns less than two acres or smaller than 1, or if you got a yard that is challenging to use a wider power mower in. In my opinion, if i had a lawn your size and had some difficult areas that the power mower can not reach I would get this Fiskar for those difficult areas.
David Willison I see your poiint and agree but i have way too much grass to cut to use a push mower. I think its hilarious to see my neighbors cutting their tiny back yard with a riding mower. I have a commercial lawn care business so yeah i dont have the time of day to use a push mower.
Works great! th-cam.com/users/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.
I don't think so. It is a "Stay Sharp", frictionless blade design by which the reel blade doesn't actually contact.
